Jordan Summerson Tribute

TRIBUTE TO TRAGIC
YOUNGSTER

Match in lad’s honour

FOOTY-mad youngsters paid tribute to their pal with a charity tournament.
North Shields’ Juniors Under-10s teams came together yesterday in memory of former team mate Jordan Summerson, who was killed earlier this year. The nine-year-old was hit by a Honda motorbike on Devon Road, in Chirton Grange, North Shields. Jordan, of Bridport Road on the estate, loved football and had been playing for North Shields Juniors since he was eight years old. And he was well-loved by team mates and
coaches alike for his enthusiasm for the game. Jordan’s former team manager said: “Jordan was a really nice young lad and he was very
deter mined. “He worked hard on the football pitch and had been part of the soccer school since he was eight years old. “It didn’t matter what happened during the course of the game, Jordan always had a smile
on his face. Losing him touched everyone at the club.” Yesterday, around 50 players from the club’s Under-10 teams - which Jordan would
have been about to join - took part in the tournament in his memory.
The boys wore t-shirts with Jordan’s name and picture on them, and split into five teams for friendly games. Every player was rewarded
with a medal. John Brunton, commercial manager of the club, said: “A lot of our players and staff knew Jordan very well. We decided to do this in his memory. “We thought this was a great way for the boys to show their respects. “We spoke to his parents about doing something and they were touched, although they are obviously still coming to terms with
things themselves. “We split the boys into mixed ability teams
to make it fair and we weren’t counting points, it was just about taking part. “Every player was given a medal and a t-shirt, and all the proceeds went to the Tynemouth Red Seal Rescue, who have named a lifeboat after Jordan. That was what his family wanted.” The day, held at North Shields’ John Spence School, also included events such as beat-the-goalie and a raffle. The club hopes to make the competition a regular event.
Chirton Grange was rocked by Jordan’s death, in June. Floral tributes were placed at the scene and an England football shirt was draped around a lamp post with the words: “Always in our thoughts”. Families came together to launch a petition for new safety measures on Devon Road,
saying there were problems with congestion and speeding vehicles. Around 800 people signed a petition whichwas handed to North Tyneside Council.
