Match Reports

28/01/12 - North Shields Ospreys  3 – 6 WBBC Greens

Ospreys went out of the Cup at the first hurdle following a rather limp performance in their first home game of the year.

They trailed by two early goals but when Matthew Mastaglio struck two identical strikes to put us back in the match it seemed we would go from strength to strength. However, it was not to be, as the Greens swiftly asserted a control of the game by following up with three quick goals, including an unfortunate penalty, before the end of the third quarter.

In truth, Ospreys showed little of the zest from the previous weeks performance and it was only in the last quarter that they took the game to their opponents and showed that a determination to test the Bay defence. A consolation was added by Nathan Davis but by this stage the game was out of reach.

Man of the match went to Matthew for rediscovering his goal scoring touch. However, more importantly we hope to get back on form next week at home to Ellington.

Man of the Match:      Matthew Mastaglio

22/01/12 - Berwick Rangers  3 - 3  North Shields Ospreys

Ospreys long trip up the A1 was rewarded with a gutsy performance against a strong and physical Berwick side. We were quick out of the blocks when Nathan Davis drilled in an excellent right foot shot to put us 1-0 up at the close of the first quarter.

However, the second quarter turned the game on its head, when Berwick came strongly back into the match and hit Shields for three.

Head never went down and chances still came our way but it wasn’t until the last quarter that we struck back. Firstly, Cameron Kelly gave us a lifeline and then the ever lively Joe Chidlow completed the comeback with a well struck equaliser.

At the end it seemed the Ospreys were finishing the stronger side but perhaps on balance a draw was a fair result with everyone contributing to a solid team performance.

Joe Chidlow edges the man of the match for a well timed and deserved equalizer.

08/01/12 – La Liga
Ashington CFC   1 - 4 North Shields Ospreys

Ospreys kicked off the new year and their La Liga campaign with a bright start and an all round good team display.

Quick off the mark, as ever, was Joe to deliver a pin point cross for Cameron Kelly to put Shields one up. This was quickly followed by an unfortunate own goal which put us two up at the end of the first quarter.

Ashington were always in this game and they reduced the arrears with a good strike from a corner before Nathan Davis restored Ospreys two goal cushion with a clinical strike.

The third period produced chances for both sides but it was not until the final quarter when Cameron Kelly bagged his second that the game was sealed for the Ospreys.

A good collective team performance, with Matthew Mastaglio edging the mom for a strong holding role in the middle of the park and down the left flank. Well done to all!

Man of the Match:      Matthew Mastaglio

11/12/11: North Shields Ospreys 3 – 9  Newcastle City Celtic

The score suggests a comfortable win for the premier bound City side – but we worked them all the way.

Every player put in full effort to really make our opponents get their points. A super hat-trick was scored by Joe Chidlow which had the impact of keeping Celtic very much on their guard. Our midfields worked tirelessly and defenders Tom, David and Ciaron showed 100% commitment

Our first half of the season has given us a respectable mid table place and we can look forward to a very competitive mini league in 2012.

Well done to all the lads - and parents for support. Everyone a man of the match on this occasion though a special mention has to be given to our hat-trick hero, Joe.

Enjoy your Christmas and new year!

10/12/11:  AE Phoenix  2 North Shields Ospreys  5

The first of two games in a weekend brought a comforting win for the Ospreys on another wet and cold morning. A sharp start brought us two quick goals from Jake Barlow and a cracker from Nathan Davis.

However, Phoenix pegged us back and it was not until the last two quarters that we again got a grip on the game when Cameron Kelly slid in a third, Joe Chidlow bagged one from the right wing and Jake Barlow rounded off a move involving Matthew and Nathan to stab the ball in from in front of the goal.

A good collective team effort, in freezing conditions. Jake takes the man of the match for applying the finishing touch when we needed it!

Man of the Match:      Jake Barlow

4/12/11 - Cramlington Js Flamengo 9       North Shields Ospreys       2

For over half the match the Ospreys held their high flying opponents very well with some spirited defending and a well struck goal from Joe Chidlow.

However, we were eventually worn down in freezing conditions with the only highlight in the second two quarters being a beautifully struck free kick from Cameron Kelly to provide Ospreys with a consolation.

Our man of the match went to Cameron for his goal of the season contender!

27/11/11 - North Shields Ospreys 1 – 3 Blyth Rangers Blacks

Up against gale force winds it was a credit to both teams that they were able to produce some good football and an entertaining game to give some warmth to the parents on the sidelines!

In what was a very even game, Rangers came out on top having taken advantage of the chances that came their way. They struck first in the second quarter but were pegged back by Jake Barlows second strike in consecutive weeks.

Unfortunately for the Ospreys, Blyth then took the lead again when a header from a corner was rightly judged by the referee to have crossed the line – who needs goal line technology?!

Chances came and went to both sides in the final quarter with Nathan coming close from several free kicks. However, it was not to be for the Ospreys on this occasion as Blyth sealed the win with a third goal in the final minutes.

Well done to both teams for braving the weather! Ospreys man of the match went to Nathan Davis who is now showing signs of returning to his impressive form of last season.

Man of the Match:       Nathan Davis

20/11/11 - Bedlington Town Vipers 4 – 1 North Shields Ospreys

Ospreys five game unbeaten streak came to a sticky end against an upbeat Bedlington side who gained sweet revenge for two defeats from the previous season. In truth, we never really got going in this game and our usual fluency and pace seemed to be rather lack lustre – maybe the afternoon kick-off didn’t suit us?

That said, the Vipers should be applauded for taking their chances well and when we did show some signs of creativity (the third quarter) we failed to take ours.

Bedlington scored four well taken goals before the Ospreys gained some of their pride back with a well taken individual goal from Jake Barlow, who is showing he can play in a variety of positions.

Our man of the match on this occasion has gone to Ciaron for a consistent physical presence and some great tackling – well done.

Hopefully we can regain our creativity next week and put a smile back our faces?!

Man of the Match:      Ciaron Thomas

 06/11/11 - North Shields Ospreys  9 – 0 Whitley Bay FC Porto

Ospreys continued their winning streak with a comfortable win against their near neighbours.

To the delight of the home crowd, Craig Foster struck his debut goal for the Ospreys in the first minute with a quick burst into the box and a firm drive into the bottom corner. By the half way stage, Ospreys had made the game safe with further strikes from Joe Chidlow, Cameron Kelly and Nathan Davis. Indeed, Nathan and Cameron went onto to bag a hat-trick each with a couple of Nathans strikes being particularly impressive.

Porto kept their heads high and battled on with their keeper regularly called into action but an additional strike from Ciaron Thomas kept the pressure on. Once again, Dan and the defence can take pride in a clean sheet and Matthew takes the prize for the most assists for the goals. However, to mark his debut goal, the Manager has selected Craig for Man of the Match on this occasion.

Well done all – lets keep this going.

Man of the Match:       Craig Foster

30/10/2011 Ponteland Madrid    0 – 5  North Shields Ospreys

An excellent team performance from the Ospreys on a bright sunny morning – looks like the clocks going back an hour paid dividends with everyone looking sharp and enthusiastic!

Cameron put the ball on a plate for Joe Chidlow to fire the Ospreys one up in first quarter and Joe had completed his hatrick by the half way stage with two further cracking strikes!

Ponteland continued to play the game with some sharp passing but the manager’s persistence in encouraging a good team shape and a strong work ethic was coming off well with David, Jake and Tom maintaining a clean sheet for Dan. Joe and Matthew continued to track the full length of the pitch for the entire game and Nathan ably doing the grafting in the middle. A debut goal for Craig continues to elude him – don’t worry it’ll come soon.

Perhaps the best two goals came in the last quarter to give a gloss to the performance. Tom Hardy rifled in a fine goal after a surging solo run and then Matthew Mastaglio concluded the scoring with a tidy finish after good right wing play from Joe.

Although Joe took the plaudits with a fine hatrick the Managers acknowledgement that good things start from the back and with simplicity meant that Jake was awarded the MOM for a very consistent and disciplined performance. Well done to all!

Man of the Match: Jake Barlow

16/10/11 - Ellington 4 - 4 North Shields Ospreys

Our trip out along the coastal route saw us return with a point from a very evenly contested game. Cameron Kelly got Ospreys off to a bright start when he broke clear to fire a crisp shot into the corner.

The game then rapidly swung equally in both directions. Ellington replied in the second quarter before Shields again regained the lead following a crisply struck corner from Joe Chidlow. Into the third quarter and Ellington struck twice to lead for the first time in the game. Again, the Ospreys replied – this time full back Tom Hardy scoring from close range following another set piece.

The fourth quarter saw Ellington take a 4-3 lead from a direct free kick. With time running out, the Manager reintroduced Matthew and Nathan back into action and this thankfully paid dividends when Nathan Davis headed in from close range.

A mention for Craig who is beginning to find his feet in the team and for Jake who demonstrated what a capable tackler he can be in the first two quarters. However, the Managers choice for man of the match went to Tom Hardy for another full contribution in all areas of the pitch (and well done to his Dad for map reading and navigation skills!).

Honours even… and I’m sure both teams would reflect this was fair.

Man of the match:      Tom Hardy

09/10/11
North Shields Ospreys 3 – 0 Cramlington Town Yellows

The Manager will claim that the team chat at the half way stage was the turning point in this game……though the lads may have their own view? After two quarters, the Ospreys had goalkeeper Dan to thank for still being in the game! The Manager reflected that he would be reluctant to give man of the match to his keeper for the third time this season and urged the Ospreys to take the game to their opponents.

This attained an immediate response when Tom Hardy swung in a shot from the edge of the area that dipped under the bar. In the final quarter Matthew and Nathan combined twice to seal the points for the Ospreys. Firstly, Nathan Davis tapped the ball in from close range after the keeper failed to hold onto a corner from Matthew. Matthew then dribbled around the Yellows full back to put in a great cross for Nathan Davis to head home (yes a header!!).

So after a few scares Ospreys turned on the style. Everyone played their part (particularly Dan again) but the Manager has given Tom the man of the match for putting us on the way to a win. Well done lads!

02/10/2011
Blyth Town Cosmos   6       North Shields Ospreys       1

Ospreys put in a full hearted effort against a strong Blyth side that will surely be pushing to finish in the top five. Blyth were physical and pushed the Ospreys back into their own half for sustained periods but the lads never gave up and ensured Cosmos had to work hard for their win.

Blyth were restricted to just single goals in the first two quarters whilst Ospreys also had chances on the break with Joe and Matthew going close. Dan made some super saves throughout the game to frustrate the opponents but by the time Joe Chidlow hit a deserved consolation for the Ospreys the game was beyond them.

Craig almost grabbed a first goal for the Ospreys when sent clear only for the keeper to save. Joe and Dan both had great games today but the Manager has chosen Dan as the man of the match for some great stops.

Having played some of the strongest clubs in the league Ospreys should now begin to find their way in the next few weeks.

Man of the Match:      Dan Nicholson

25/09/2011
North Shields Ospreys         4       Ashington CFC    3

Ospreys gained their second win of the season with a narrow win and found themselves hanging on at the end.

Matthew Mastaglio put Ospreys one up with a firmly struck left foot drive with further goals added by Nathan Davis (2) and Joe Chidlow.

However, despite being 4-1 down, Ashington came back strong and replied with two late goals to leave the Ospreys hanging on. Dan ensured the points went to the Ospreys with some fine stops. The team are still finding their feet this season and it was difficult to pick out a man of the match (as I wasn’t in attendance!) but I’ve selected Nathan for his two goals which helped the Ospreys secure victory.

Man of the Match:       Nathan Davis

22/09/2011
Whitley Bay BC Blues            11     North Shields Ospreys         0

Despite the heavy score the team battled throughout and held their classy opposition well for half the match. However, the well disciplined, skilful and class of one of last seasons premiership sides eventually overpowered the Ospreys to ease to victory.

Hopefully our lads can appreciate the positives from our opposition and can be pleased that they didn’t let their heads drop. Managers man of the match went to Jake Barlow for 100% effort throughout.

Man of the Match:       Jake Barlow

11/09/11 - North Shields Ospreys 2 – 8 Wallsend BC Valencia

Ospreys were brought down to earth after last weeks victory against their anticipated strong opposition. However, despite the score, Wallsend didn’t have it all their own way and it was perhaps only in the third quarter when the Ospreys let things slip to allow the Boys Club to take full command of the match.

The first two periods were very tight but Wallsend took advantage of their opportunities and led by three goals at the half way stage. The usually solid and energetic Ospreys midfield seemed to let their heads go down to accept defeat in the third period where only a super strike from Joe Chidlow gave Ospreys a consolation to the four goals added by Wallsend.

Wallsend continued to play a disciplined and simple game but we held our heads high to take the game to our opponents in the last period where Nathan Davis struck for the Ospreys with only one further goal conceded.

In patches we competed well but required more self belief to really match our opponents. Dan Nicholson, in goal for the Ospreys, made some crucial and brave saves to prevent further goals and was selected as our man of the match.

Keep our heads up lads! There will be further strong tests ahead but I’m confident we can learn from games like this.

Man of the Match: Dan Nicholson

04/09/2011 - Morpeth SC Hornets  1    North Shields Ospreys   16

Ospreys cruised to victory in their first competitive league game on grass, at a very sunny Morpeth. Nathan Davies had converted a penalty within the first minute and went on to complete a hatrick in the first quarter - with further strikes being added by Cameron Kelly (2) and Matthew Mastaglio to leave the Hornets stung!

The second period gave little respite to a Morpeth side that continued to battle. Cameron Kelly completed his hatrick, Joe Childlow struck his first of the season and there was a debut strike for Jake Barlow.

Dan’s hopes of a clean sheet were dealt a blow in the third period when Morpeth grabbed a goal but the Ospreys were still flying and clinical strikes were added by Nathan Davis, Matthew Mastaglio and Jake Barlow.

Ospreys reshuffled their pack for the final quarter which allowed their reliable defensive trio of Tom Hardy, Ciaron Thomas and David Mohon to get among the goals. Particular satisfaction was attained when David Mohon struck home from a pin point cross from Matthew to score his first ever goal for the Ospreys.

Well done to Morpeth for fighting through to the end. Clearly there were lots of plusses from this game but the Ospreys should be aware of a stern test coming next week against Wallsend Boys Club.

Given the result it was difficult for the Manager to select a Man of the Match – but, on this occasion, for converting his first competitive goals for the Ospreys it has gone to David.

Well done all!

Man of the Match:   David Mohon
