Match Reports

10/4/11 - North Shields Ospreys  4   Bedlington Town 0

The Ospreys finished their season in style with a seventh consecutive win against Bedlington.

After having soaked up some early pressure from the opposition the Ospreys began to get to grips with the game with their well balanced side dominating from the second period onwards. Tommy Taylor struck first with a close range finish and Nathan Davis made it two when he latched onto a through ball from Joe.

Nathan then became provider in the third period when he set up Matthew Mastaglio to strike a sweet left foot shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 to the Ospreys.

Although Ospreys were now on top, Bedlington continued to make our defence work hard and Ciaron, David and Tom never put a foot wrong to preserve another clean sheet for Dan.

At the end of the third period Nathan Davis grabbed his second of the match, to put the result beyond doubt, with another firm strike.

The forth quarter saw Cameron and Matthew take up positions in defence to release David up front in search of a goal for our “ever reliable defender”. It was not to be though on this occasion but again the whole team put in a thoroughly organised and enthusiastic display to end the season on a high.

Man of the match was chosen by our opposition manager. They selected David Mahon for a disciplined, energetic and passing display from the right back position to up front.

Well done Ospreys…..I think you have all had a season to be proud of.

Man of the Match:    David Mahon

3/4/11  North Shields Ospreys  4        North Shields Eagles 3

Ospreys kept their winning run in tact with a strong come back against their derby rivals. This time it was the Eagles that started brightly and deservedly took the lead early on. In the second quarter they extended their lead and Ospreys were looking rather tired in comparison.

However, lady luck smiled on us at the end of the second period when an Eagles clearance rebounded off an unfortunate team mate straight back into the goal. This break proved to be the turning point as in the third period Nathan Davis, who had been unusually quiet, came to life with a super equaliser and then set up Joe Chidlow to put the Ospreys ahead for the first time in the match.

The Eagles were still pressing but Matthew was having a great game in midfield to help break down the attacks and to help to protect the Ospreys defence. Cameron Kelly bagged the Ospreys fourth from a quick breakaway and although the Eagles hit another late goal it proved to be a consolation.

Man of the match for this game was chosen by the opposition who selected Matthew Mastaglio for an energetic defensive midfield role that broke up a lot of the Eagles attacks.

Well done to both teams for once again putting on a great match!

The Ospreys now look forward to their final league game next week against Bedlington Town.

Man of the Match:      Matthew Mastaglio

27/3/11 - North Shields Ospreys  1 – 0  Northburn Wanderers

Ospreys followed up their impressive win last week with an even better performance to defeat their previously unbeaten opponents in a tense tight thriller!

Ospreys knew they were in for a tough match having previously been beaten twice by a strong a physical side. However, on the back of a five match unbeaten run, they were right up for the challenge and every single player responded.

The first two quarters were very tight with Northburn shading possession and threatening the Ospreys goal. David, Tom and Ciaron were matching the physical presence of the Northburn players and clearing their line superbly. Matthew and Joe were tirelessly tracking back to ensure the Ospreys defended in numbers and Dan pulled off some great saves to keep Northburn out.

Northburns direct style of play was countered excellently by Nathan who cut out almost every long throw and corner whilst Cameron and Tommy battled upfront to keep Ospreys in the game.

With the game heading towards a rare goalless draw, the key moment arrived in the last quarter, when Tommy Taylor struck a superb goal from a direct free kick – nice celebration Tommy!

Ospreys rode out the last few minutes by retaining a well disciplined defensive unit from front to back to keep Dans goal in tact.

Great display lads! Looking forward to our derby match next week against the Eagles.

Man of the Match:    Dan Nicholson

20/3/11 - North Shields Ospreys  7 - 0  Ellington Jnr

Ospreys produced perhaps their best performance of the season, responding to the Managers request to encourage passing and movement on the pitch. Tommy Taylor set Ospreys on the way with a scorching free kick and Cameron Kelly claimed his first of four following a great team move involving Nathan and Matthew.

Tom and David held their shape to limit any opposition chances. Joe Chidlow then struck the Ospreys third latching onto to a long clearance from Dan.

The third quarter was perhaps the most satisfying with a collection of fine team goals involving all Ospreys midfielders. Cameron Kelly grabbed three in this period with Matthew Mastaglio squeezing one in thorough a crowded Ellington defence.

The Manager made a couple of tactical changes in the last period to allow David and Tom to attain a more attacking role with Nathan and Matthew reverting to defence. This paid instant dividend for Tom Hardy when he netted from a Tommy Taylor corner (cue a loud roar from the touchline!). David also came close when he struck the ball over the bar and Matthew preserved a clean sheet for Dan with a last ditch tackle from a late Ellington attack.

The whole team deserved a Man of the Match award for this performance and the Manager “copped out” of making the decision himself…….instead seeking the view of the opposition Manager who selected Nathan Davis who was at the heart of all the action for the Ospreys.

Well done lads! A tough game beckons next week against top of the table opposition, Northburn.

Man of the Match: Nathan Davis

13/3/11 - North Shields Ospreys 5 – 3 Morpeth Sporting

Ospreys gained their second successive win against an improved and battling Morpeth side. Again, the Ospreys didn’t quite get into a smooth rhythm and despite winning they failed to show the encouraged passing side their game. That said, there were some fine individual goals that now has the Ospreys placed second in their group table.

Joe Chidlow struck first for the Ospreys before Morpeth cancelled this out with a speculative long range shot. In the third period, Tommy Taylor scored direct from a free kick and Ciaron Thomas notched his first of the season with a great strike into the top corner following an Ospreys corner. Cameron Kelly made the scoreline comfortable for the Ospreys when he tapped in from close distance after Tommy had hit the bar.

Morpeth scored twice in the forth period but Nathan Davis had already added the Ospreys fifth to secure another win.

Quite deliberately, the Manager is not nominating a Man of the Match for this game – instead offering an incentive for our final four games where the Man of the Match awards will be given to players who can show they have learnt to find space, pass to their team mates and become more aware of what is happening around them. Come on lads – you can all do it.

Well done Ospreys! Keep the winning run going with a solid team display next week.

6/3/11 - North Shields Ospreys  7 – 0 Morpeth Sporting

Ospreys were on top from the early stages but never really achieved the passing and movement of the previous two weeks. As such, despite the scoreline, this was a fairly scrappy game. Several chances came and went in the first quarter with only an unfortunate own goal to put the Ospreys ahead.

In the second period Ospreys took their chances better. Nathan Davies grabbed a brace, Cameron Kelly fired in a great goal from a flowing move and Matthew Mastaglio scored a sweet left foot strike direct from a corner kick. The Morpeth keeper was kept busy and produced some fine saves to keep the score down but further pressure paid off in the third period when Joe Chidlow struck and Tommy Taylor rounded the scoring off with a great right foot strike that into the top corner from outside the box.

Ospreys shuffled their positions in the final quarter and although chances fell to the new look attack no further strikes were added.

Credit again to the unsung heroes in defence who helped to attain another clean sheet and with this in mind, the Managers MOM goes to the ever consistent David Mahon.

Managers Man of the Match:          David Mahon

27/2/11 - North Shields Ospreys  5 – 1 Bedlington Town

The benefits of encouraging the lads to keep moving and passing paid off with a lively and encouraging display with most of the goals coming from flowing moves involving several players.

The first quarter, as expected, was very tight but the Ospreys defence, marshalled by Ciaron and Tom stood firm. The second quarter exploded to life with a great run down the right from Tommy Taylor which finished with a powerful strike into the net. Two further goals were added by the lively Joe Chidlow but credit must also be given to Matthew and Nathan for setting up the strikes.

Bedlington struck back in the third period but again the Ospreys came strong in the final quarter when Joe Chidlow secured his hatrick and Nathan Davis added to his season tally following further good team moves.

A very satisfying performance that illustrated that everyone has come on individually and collectively. Managers MOM goes to Tommy Taylor who put in a whole hearted display of running, tackling and a well taken goal that set the team up for a good win. Well done lads!

Managers Man of the Match:          Tommy Taylor

20/2/11 - North Shields Ospreys 2 – 2 North Shields Eagles

An exhilarating “derby match” against our club rivals. This game had everything – quality goals, enthusiasm, desperate defending, great saves and an encouraging crowd roaring all the lads from both teams on!

Ospreys started brightly with Matthew Mastaglio scoring with a half volley followed by a cracker from Nathan Davis from an acute angle. The Eagles hit back right on the referee’s whistle at the end of the second quarter and notched an equaliser in the third quarter. However, chances were coming thick and fast to both sides. Tommy and Joe both tested the Eagles keeper and Nathan went close from a free kick. Last ditch defending from the Ospreys kept the Eagles out and Dan produced a great save in the closing stages to give both teams a share of the spoils.

Managers MOM for this one may be difficult to pick – a good team performance. Matthew, Nathan, David and Dan all having a great game. One to reflect on……

13/2/11 - North Shields Ospreys 0 - 3 Northburn Wanderers

Northburn seem to be gaining a reputation as our bogey team for this season. However, this time we could have few complaints with the end outcome as we regrettably failed to find any consistency and rarely threatened the Northburn goal. Next time we meet we must break our duck against this team. Managers MOM award for a solid display goes to Tom Hardy.

Man of the Match:    Tom Hardy

6/2/11 - North Shields Ospreys 5 – 0 Ellington Juniors

The Ospreys commenced their “Spring Bundesliga” programme with a positive team display and some great goals! Nathan Davis notched first with a run through the middle and a direct shot that beat the keeper. Tommy Taylor then added to the Ospreys tally after a fine run down the right wing. The second quarter saw stubborn resistance from Ellington and good solid sensible defending from the Ospreys – David, Tom and Ciaron doing the basics very well to protect Dan in the Shields goal.

At the start of the third period the lads felt that another goal would put them firmly in a winning position and it arrived with a cracking strike from Nathan Davis into the top corner. Matthew Mastaglio then struck the forth from close range to give the Ospreys some breathing space. Perhaps the best goal was left till last when Joe Chidlow ran on to a loose ball to fire home from well outside the box – cracking stuff!

A great team spirit today in very wet conditions and evidence that we are beginning to pass and become aware of our team mates. Whilst goals may win the game it stems from having basics right in our defence and so the Managers choice of MOM on this occasion goes to Ciaron Thomas for a sensible solid display from the back. Well done Ospreys!

Man of the Match:    Ciaron Thomas

30/1/11 - North Shields Ospreys 3 – 4 Cramlington Juniors Barca

The result may show a loss but the team came off the pitch upbeat and smiling following a gutsy and enthusiastic display against one of the stronger teams in the league. In truth, the Ospreys really deserved a share of the spoils and would have had a deserved draw had it not been for a harsh penalty earlier in the game. Despite going three goals down early on the Ospreys battled all the way and got themselves back into the game when Nathan Davis struck a fine shot in off the post in the third quarter. Cramlington notched another strike to give them a three goal cushion but by the latter stages of the match the Ospreys were dominating the game. Their reward came when another tremendous strike from the ever busy Nathan Davis flew in and then Matthew Mastaglio reduced the lead to one with a tap in following a great move involving Nathan and Joe. Had the game run another few minutes the lads, our vocal and encouraging supporters on the touchline and I, all believe we would have got the equaliser the team deserved.

It was hard to pick out our Man of the Match when everyone put the effort in but for an action packed “box to box” performance and two classy goals the Manager selected Nathan Davis.

Man of the Match:    Nathan Davis

23/1/2011 - North Shields Ospreys 3 - 6 Whitley Bay FC Barca

Despite being down on team numbers, Ospreys started very lively and took the lead with a super long range strike from Cameron Kelly. The Bay side clearly had a couple of skilful individuals but it appeared that we could collectively be a match for them. However, following a Bay equaliser and despite taking the lead again through Joe Chidlow, the Ospreys seemed to switch off completely for the second quarter and went in trailing 5-2. In the third quarter Ospreys remedied issues with the energetic Joe Chidlow striking his second of the game and then nearly pulling it back to within one in the last period. However, it was not to be, with the lads perhaps reflecting on the second period as the key turning point. Still some high points with Joe Chidlow taking the Managers MOM for a non stop display in midfield and two good goals!

Man of the Match:    Joe Chidlow

16/1/2011 - North Shields Ospreys 2 - 6 Newcastle City Rangers

The Ospreys produced a genuinely gutsy performance against an impressive Newcastle side that have been together for several years. Having taken the lead in the first quarter through a good strike from Cameron Kelly the Ospreys held there own for the next two periods conceding only one goal from the subsequent two periods. All the players kept going right to the end but the passing game of the Newcastle side eventually wore down the Ospreys resistance in the last quarter when Newcastle made their possession count. Still the Ospreys had something in them when Nathan Davis struck the last goal of the match to give the score a deserved respectability.

Well done lads for keeping it going – Managers choice of MOM went to Tom Hardy for some impressive last ditch defending!

Man of the Match:    Tom Hardy

9/1/2011 - North Shields Ospreys  4 – 1 Cramlington Utd Lions

Ospreys kicked off the New Year with a bright and enthusiastic performance against a lively Cramlington side. The Lions dominated early possession but it was the Ospreys who took the lead when Cameron Kelly raced clear from a breakaway to shoot low in to the bottom corner of the net. Cramlington continued to push forward but Ciaron, Tom and David restricted them to few clear cut chances and again the Ospreys took advantage from a counter attack when Joe Chidlow scored in the second quarter.

The third quarter was dominated by the Ospreys with Matthew and Nathan both hitting the woodwork before Joe Chidlow added two more to his tally to complete a fine hatrick. Tommy went close twice in the final quarter and Dan was denied a clean sheet when Cramlington gained a deserved consolation in the last few minutes.

Well done lads – a great start to 2011 and a fine hatrick from Joe to give him the Managers choice of Man of the Match.

Man of the Match:    Joe Chidlow

12/12//10 - North Shields Ospreys  1 – 4 Cramlington Town

Ospreys returned to action after a fortnight of postponed fixtures and appeared unresponsive to their early morning kick-off time. A fluency of movement and passing was not as evident as normal as Ospreys struggled to test the opposition keeper. Cramlington took the lead early on and continued to press - though the match lacked goal scoring opportunities from both sides.

Further strikes from Cramlington, including a rasping free kick, put them in a comfortable position but to Ospreys credit they kept pushing for a goal and it duly arrived when Manager’s Man of the Match, Cameron Kelly, refused to give up on a long ball and poked the ball home after confusion in the Town defence.

Man of the Match:    Cameron Kelly

21/11//10 - North Shields Ospreys  1 - 10 Wallsend BC Barca

Everyone knew this was going to be a tough match against one of the strongest club sides in the area but the lads battled well and with a touch of luck could have added to the single consolation goal we scored.

Our defence was put under constant pressure with Dan, David and Ciaron having a very busy time. I think we’ll be pleased that we only have to play them once!

If “next goal” (and last) was the winner then as Nathan Davis struck the last goal of the game with a great free kick, we won!

A super and strong display from Ciaron in defence who takes the Managers man of the match award.

Man of the Match:    Ciaron Thomas

14/11//10 - North Shields Ospreys  3 – 1 Ponteland Milan

Ospreys went into this match against a side unbeaten in their previous five games and showed great character and attitude to pull off an excellent vistory.

The first two quarters were very tight with David, Ciaron and Tom restricting Ponteland to few clear cut chances despite dominant possession. Dan was very assured in goal and the Ospreys midfield were very busy. However, Ponteland edged ahead in the third quarter when Ospreys failed to clear their lines for once.

The last quarter saw the Ospreys turn the game on its head when Matthew Mastaglio struck two superb left foot shots into the top corner of the net within three minutes to put Shields in front. Milan pushed forward but another Ospreys break away sealed the game when Cameron Kelly scored from close range following a flowing Ospreys move.

All of the lads put in a great display but a special Managers mention goes to Nathan Davis who dealt with the long ball game of Milan perfectly and Matthew who struck gold with his left foot to win the game. Well done lads!

Man of the Match:    Matthew Mastaglio

7/11//10 - North Shields Ospreys 1 - 8  Whitley Bay Sproggs

At the start of a tough November this match saw the Ospreys paired against the best passing side they will face all season. Everyone worked tirelessly and Nathan Davis’ well struck consolation goal was only the second goal conceded by the Sproggs all season.

As Manager, I was very proud of the lads to keep going all the way to the end whistle and in a match where the defenders were up against it an obvious choice for Man of the Match had to go to the ever consistent David Mahon – well done David.

Put this result to one side lads…….our balance of learning, development and fun will see us heading in the right direction.

Man of the Match:    David Mahon

31/10/10 - North Shields Ospreys  0 – 4 Northburn Wanderers

If ever a score line did not reflect the match this was it! I think everyone from the lads, parents and even the opposition, left wondering how Ospreys never managed to put the ball in the net.

The woodwork was hit, there were goal line clearances and even the head of the Northburn keeper kept Ospreys out. Giving credit to Northburn, they took their chances well with one of their players having a particularly strong and lethal shot.

However, it was not to be today despite some fine performances across the park. Some tough matches beckon in November but the team has made great progress since September.

Managers choice for mom this week goes to Ciaron for his consistent flexibility across several positions and for taking one in the face from a Northburn free kick! Well done Ciaron.

Man of the Match:    Ciaron Thomas

24/10/10 - North Shields Ospreys  0 Blyth Rangers Valencia 1

Ospreys went in search of their fourth successive win against strong opposition - the U8s “first team” from Blyth Rangers.

This match ebbed and flowed in both directions and Ospreys can take great heart from a sound team performance that should have rewarded them with a point. Matthew Mastaglio forced the Blyth keeper to make a great save in the first quarter whilst Cameron Kelly sought to add to his goal tally from a series of free kicks. However, it was Blyth that stole the game with a very good headed goal from a corner right at the end of the second period.

Ospreys midfield worked tirelessly to try and break the Blyth defence down whilst the defence were also kept on their toes in this lively and entertaining match. There was no shame in losing this game and I feel the parents too gave great support to both sides right up to the final whistle.

Managers choice of man of the match for call of duty goes to Joe Chidlow for getting out of his “sick bed” and putting in another energetic display.

Well done Ospreys – enjoy your half term holiday.

Man of the Match:    Joe Chidlow

17/10/10 - North Shields Ospreys  4 - 0  Ashington CFC

Scorers:  Tommy Taylor, Nathan Davis, Cameron Kelly (2)

A third successive win for the ever improving Ospreys against an Ashington side that battled all the way. Tommy Taylor set Shields on the way with a fine right foot strike in the first quarter. The match then settled into a very even contest with Matthew blazing over the bar from ten yards and Ciaron coming within inches of his first goal with a super twenty yard shot that rattled the cross bar. Ospreys nerves were settled when Nathan Davis blasted the ball into the top corner in the third quarter and Cameron Kelly capped a captains performance with a brace in the last period.

Particularly pleasing was the shape and discipline of the Ospreys defence and midfield which restricted Ashington to few clear cut chances with Joe clearing off the line superbly in the last minute to ensure a first clean sheet for Dan and the team. Indeed Joe had an exceptional energetic game but the Managers choice for “Man of the Match” goes to our goalkeeper, Dan, who will be pleased with a clean sheet.

A great team effort!

Man of the Match: Dan Nicholson

10/10/10 - North Shields Ospreys  6 Cramlington Jnrs Santos 3
Scorers:           Cameron Kelly (3), Tommy Taylor, Matthew Mastaglio, Joe Chidlow

Ospreys gained their second successive win in a match that saw some excellent finishing from a side growing in confidence. An early lead for Ospreys came via a corner where Cameron Kelly claimed the last touch and Tommy Taylor bagged his first of the season with a rasping right foot drive to put Shields two up. However, Ospreys were pegged back quickly to 2-2 before the end of the first quarter. Cameron Kelly capped the second period with two goals, the latter being an early contender for goal of the season with a lethal drive into the top corner.

Sensible no frills defending from David, Tom and Ciaron and two great saves from Dan kept Santos at bay and when Joe broke down the right wing and crossed for Matthew Mastaglio to drill in from five yards the win looked secure. Ospreys stretched their lead further to 6-2 when Joe Chidlow grabbed his first of the season with a fine right foot strike from ten yards. Nathan was buzzing in midfield and though further chances came it was a spirited Cramlington that scored the last goal of the game.

The quality of the goals rightly got the attention but the Managers choice of Man of the Match went to one of our unsung defenders for doing all the simple things right – Tom Hardy.

Well done Ospreys!

Man of the Match:    Tom Hardy

3/10/10   North Shields Ospreys 5  WBFC Real 2

Pressure and team spirit paid off for Ospreys as they recorded a good win despite falling a goal behind. Defenders David and Tom held firm to ensure Dan was less busy while Ciaron, Tommy, Nathan and Matthew bossed the midfield. Cameron presented a threat each time the ball was up front. Two goals apiece from Matthew and Nathan and one from Cameron ensured a good afternoon for the Ospreys.

Man of the Match: Tommy Taylor

26/9/10    North Shields Ospreys 0   WBBC Blues 8

Ospreys were left in doubt that they are in a strong league after a tough and gritty performance against a very strong side. Good signs of the lads being able to mix it with strong opposition.

Man of the Match: Cameron Kelly

19/9/10    North Shields Ospreys 1  Walker Whites 4

A good strong performance from Ospreys who were right in this game till the end. Matthew scored the seasons opening goal following a flowing move involving Joe and Cameron. Regrettably Walker pressure paid off in the last quarter to leave Ospreys frustrated.

Man of the match: Matthew Mastaglio

12/9/10   North Shields Ospreys 0   North Shields Hawks 6

Ospreys started the new season with a derby against the strong “first team” and battled well throughout. Nathan was denied the Ospreys opening goal of the season when the referee chalked out a fine strike for an earlier infringement but still took the Managers man of the match award. A fine first performance from a new side playing together for the first time.

Man of the match: Nathan Davis
