North Shields Lions 2 Whitley Bay Boys Club Blues 2
The final game of the season against second place Blues. A what a game
this was. The Blues were in with a shout of the league title while the
Lions could claim second spot if they sneaked a win. The Lions took
the lead with a great left foot shot from Ethan Brown, but the Blues
got back into the game on a counter attack. Matty Longstaff restored
the lead with an equally good right foot effort, only for the Blues
to equalise for a second time. Both sides had chances with the Lions
playing the better football. The game ended all square and to rapturous
applause from the Lions supporters in recognition of a fantastic season.
Well done Lions – we are all proud of you – you’ve
played football the right way and with smiles on your faces. Enjoy the
summer and thanks for everything!!!!

Wallsend Boys Club Greens 1 North Shields Lions 2
Another hard game for the Lions against tough opposition, but again
they got off to a flyer. Another first was achieved as Leon Nelson opened
his account that meant every single Lions player had scored in the league
this season. Leon picked the ball up on the edge of the box and drove
it home giving the keeper no chance. Connor Brown bashed in the second
before Wallsend staged a late rally, but the Lions defence again held
firm an the three points was theirs. Excellent again boys!

Cramlington Juniors Barca 0 North Shields Lions 1
On a cool Friday evening the Lions lined up to play their re-arranged
fixture against Barca. Having drawn with them in the previous league
game and been knocked out the tournament at Monkton, the Lions players
were a bit apprehensive before the game. However that soon changed.
The Lions only had 7 players, with Matthew Morley, Joe Conway and Leon
Nelson all unavailable, but the Lions ripped into Barca from the start.
Matty Longstaff had two good efforts, Luke Geddes went close and both
Ethan Brown and Lewis Cass had great efforts. Connor Brown was in good
form and Matthew Cartwright played a blinder in defence. It was Luke
that banged in the eventual winner with a great shot from a narrow angle
in the second quarter. Barca brought on their fresh legs in the last
quarter, but the Lions defended superbly well and two great saves from
Sam Terrance kept another clean sheet.
Well done guys you were immense tonight!

North Shields Lions v Cramlington Juniors Corinthians
The weather was the best it had been for a while as the Lions lined
up for the dreaded encounter with “them that shall never be beaten”.
It was slightly unusual conditions as there was no wind, the sun was
out and there was hardly a glove in sight – perfect conditions
for football. No sign (at this stage) of the inevitable influence on
the game. The Corinthians started on the attack – forcing Sam
Terrance into the first of many good saves. Following last weeks heroics
in front of goal, Sam was definitely needed between the sticks for today’s
encounter. Ethan Brown and Matthew Cartwright began as the defensive
pairing and made some good tackles as they formed a solid defensive
unit. Leon Nelson, Lewis Cass and Luke Geddes formed the starting midfield
trio and began to put Cramlington under pressure. The ball wouldn’t
quite fall the Lions way as Corinthians defended well, using their height
to full advantage. It was the Lions though that drew first blood –
a Lions attack was hacked clear of the box and the ball fell to Ethan
who stepped up to hit a shot first time that was too hot to handle for
the Cramlington keeper. 1-0. Within minutes the two sides were back
on level terms when a free kick was given away outside the box. The
Cramlington tactics were to block Sam in goal, which they did, but nothing
could have stopped the power free-kick as it whizzed home for the equaliser.
1-1. That was the end of the (official) goal scoring in the game.
Into the second quarter and more Crammy pressure with more solid defending,
this time from Matthew Morley and Leon Nelson. Matty Longstaff was on
in midfield and he battled against the physical Crammy opposition. And
then it happened – a good move through the middle with Matty Longstaff
and Matthew Cartwright combining well to feed the ball to Luke Geddes.
Luke turned on the edge of the box and hit a great shot past the keeper.
The ball hit the inside of the near post and bounced across against
the stanchion inside the far side of the goal. The Lions players celebrated,
the Lions parents celebrated and the Cramlington supporters applauded
the goal. Crammy’s keeper picked the ball up ready to send it
forwards for the kick off, when the referee waved play on. And on we
played, despite initial confusion and the words “excuse me referee….”
beginning to form in a few mouths, the Lions did themselves proud and
got on with the game. It had happened again – a decision to cost
us dearly.
The game proceeded, Connor Brown battling back for every ball and being
shackled by two defenders in an attempt to keep him quiet. Pressure
from Cramlington and defending from the Lions. For once the Lions played
on the counter attack, Lewis Cass breaking way to set up Connor and
Luke looking for opportunities down the left. The Lions looked to play
football as much as they could. Almost always starting with the short
pass out from Sam at the back to Ethan, Moo Moo or Leon and the Corinthians
showed their quality with some lovely one touch football. The last quarter
was nail biting with chances at either end and three great chances for
the Corinthians. Sam Terrance though was in fine form – rarely
has Sam been tested much during the season, but he showed his class
today with three outstanding saves and a commanding performance in goal.
He did what only good goalkeepers can do and instilled confidence in
those around and watching him. The game ended to loud applause from
both sets of supporters and hand shakes between the teams, coaches and
referee. Overall a fair result, some more lessons learned for the Lions
and a good performance. Hang on a minute - a Cramlington player was
heard to say at the end – “didn’t they beat us”
– we did I’m sure we did……….didn’t
we?
Well done boys – we were proud of every single one of you today.
C’mon the Lions

Cramlington Juniors Santos v North Shields Lions
The Lions were ready for this game – gloved, hatted and with
double t-shirts underneath strips to keep the cold at bay. Sam was expecting
another run out up front and showed his team mates his new number 9
shirt ready under his goalkeeper’s top. The Lions started well
and Matty Longstaff showed the way with a fantastic “shinner”
to put North Shields ahead. A superb footballing move saw Ethan make
a good tackle and play the ball forwards to Matty who, instead of shooting,
nicked the ball to Luke Geddes who calmly tucked the ball home. Next
goal was a bit more “route one” with a massive Ethan clearance
(while trying to tie his laces) fall to Luke, who this time made the
chance himself and slotted home expertly for 3-0. Lewis created a good
chance – moving down the right and crossing well. Preparing for
the second quarter Sam politely asked if he could go upfront yet, but
the cold weather prevented the coach’s ears from working properly.
Luke then turned goal maker when he combined with Connor Brown to set
up Matty Longstaff to score his second of the game. The lions lost a
bit of shape as they pushed forward and Santos took full advantage with
a great counter attack that produced a good run and finish from the
Cramlington forward. Matty Morley broke from defence to beat two players
and send Matthew Cartwright away down the left and his cross was only
just missed by the Lions players in the box.
As the team were listening intently to the team talk at the end of
the second quarter Sam was eager for his input into proceedings –
eventually the coach’s gave in and allowed Sam his opportunity,
but unfortunately for Sam the referee demanded that the teams get back
on the pitch straight away. Sam was away and ready – forget the
third quarter – how could he make the time to convince Mark and
Simon to put him up front in the last quarter – his mind was working.
Lewis was in fine form – showing his silky “jinky”
skills and looking to push forward when he could. Joe had a good shot
as the Lions were encouraged to try and play football, Ethan put a cross
in and Connor was unlucky with his header. Ethan then hit a shot from
distance to score with a deflection off a Cramlington defender and with
words of encouragement to pass the ball still ringing in the teams ears,
Joe Conway promptly moved forward, beating three players and smashing
home from outside the box to score with a fantastic shot.
At the change of ends for the last quarter there were a couple of players
missing – the coach’s were confused – where were Sam
and Matthew Cartwright? At last they turned up – but something
wasn’t quite right – Sam was smiling (nothing unusual there)
and Matthew was a bit bemused (something was amiss) – Matthew
was wearing a green number 1 top and Sam had a gleaming red North Shields
number 9 shirt pulled over his head. The penny dropped – Sam had
taken things into his own hands and was now the Lions start striker.
Every player switched position to accommodate the unexpected change,
while Mark and Simon retired to the coffee bar for some refreshments
and relaxation. And then it happened…………………….Matty
Longstaff received the ball from Connor, he turned and beat his player
then passed to Sam. Sam turned side stepped the keeper and planted the
ball in the back of the net. Fantastic, superb, incredible, unbelievable
– the crowd went wild – Sam had scored (and not a bad goal
either). Matthew Cartwright, not to be outdone in goal, made one stupendous
save to deny the Santos forward – what a keeper. Then Matty Longstaff
superbly wrapped up his hat-trick and completed the scoring for the
day.
Well done Lions and big congratulations to Sam for his goal - and Matthew
C for his unselfish stint (and fantastic save) in goal. The Lions once
again showed they are a team who look out for each other.
Good performance lads – proud of you.

North Shields Lions v Ponteland Juniors
The Lions put in a good performance today with some excellent passing
and moving. With Luke Geddes missing, Leon nelson returned to action
and settled straight back into the team. The game started well with
Connor Brown and Matty Longstaff combining well, but the opening two
goals were pure football and pleasing to watch for the coaches, parents
and supporters. The first saw Ethan play the ball down the right and
into Matty Longstaff – Matty drew in two defenders and played
the ball left to Matthew Cartwright whose shot was too strong for the
goalkeeper. The second was a mirror image with this time Connor playing
the ball down the left – Matty switching play to the right and
Ethan smashing home into the corner.
Into the second quarter and Leon had a strike well saved, before Connor
had a great shot parried by the keeper, only to see Joe on hand to turn
in the rebound. Matty Morley showed his confidence and carried the ball
out of defence to set up Connor whose shot was well saved by the Ponteland
keeper. Lewis had taken over corner duties on the right and it was only
a matter of time before someone connected with his teasing crosses.
The time came and Connor ran onto Lewis’s cannon ball corner to
head the ball home “Super Mac” style for 4-0. Almost immediately
Connor grabbed his second with a perfectly executed strike. Ethan grabbed
the sixth when he side footed home with his left foot (he mentioned
this 100 times on the way home!) and the Matty Longsatff and Connor
combined again only to see the Ponteland keeper pull off another fine
save. The Lions still weren’t finished – Ethan hit the post
and Lewis driving a shot across the goal. Matthew Cartwright showed
some good skills down the left and Leon Nelson pushed forward supporting
the attack.
The final quarter saw Sam Terrance released from his penalty area to
take his place leading the line up front. This followed about three
weeks of continued harassment of the coaches from Sam – Mark and
Simon eventually giving in on the advice of their medical team! Lewis
bravely volunteered sor a stint on goal and his distribution was excellent
as he got things moving from the back. Sam had two great efforts to
break his duck – the first he dragged just wide and the second
the Ponteland keeper turned brilliantly over the bar to roars from the
crowd. The game was nearly over when it nearly came with Sam heading
a great effort towards goal.
Overall this was a good performance again from the Lions, with them
holding their positions and everyone working for Sam in the last quarter.
The story of Sam’s first goal will continue in future match reports
– the health and hearing of the Lions management team is at stake
so lets hope it comes soon…please!!
Well done guys.

North Shields Lions v Newcastle City Celtic
After last weeks set back the Lions were determined their endeavours
would be rewarded. The Lions had played extremely well against a strong
Celtic side, but although the result didn’t go their way, the
coaches were extremely happy with the performance. Matthew Morley returned
to the side after an enforced absence and the Lions started with the
throttle open and raced forward against Celtic. Joe Conway had a great
early effort just wide and then a shot well saved by the keeper. Luke
Geddes kept the pressure on with a great turn and volley from outside
the box, which again the Celtic keeper turned over the bar. Celtic though
weren’t ready to lie down and came back at the Lions forcing Sam
Terrance into a fine save, as the Lions lost their shape a little bit
(something you can’t accuse the Lions coaches of – think
about it!!).
Celtic continued with pressing into the second quarter, but the Lions
turned it around to snatch a two goal lead. Ethan Brown and Matty Longstaff
combined. Only to see Matty’s effort sail just wide. Matty was
soon successful with a fantastic shot low into the far corner and then
hit the target again when he turned in Ethan’s cross for 2-0 and
Celtic were on the back foot. Celtic got back into it with a long shot
that was deflected into the net, but the Lions responded straight away
when Joe Conway converted well from a corner. Matty Morley was commanding
again in defence – making some crucial tackles and playing his
midfielders in with good passes. Lewis Cass made two great passes and
showed some jinky skills skill as the Lions continued to dominate the
game for long periods. Connor Brown had a couple of good chances as
the Lions trued to turn their possession into goals. Again though the
Newcastle Celtic lads were up for the game and got back into match with
a good goal.
Again the Lions restored their two goal lead when Ethan Brown snatched
another goal and it looked like game over. Celtic had other ideas and
forced another goal to set up a nail biting finish. The Lions held out
for a deserved victory and the two teams once again put on an entertaining
game of football. Well done to both sides!!

Sunday 2nd March 2008
Newcastle City Celtic v North Shields Lions
The first game of the double header between the teams saw an action
packed game. Celtic had won their pre Xmas League without losing a game
and were a force to be reckoned with. The two teams had met twice before
in the pre-season tournament at John Spence. The Lions had come out
on top – but only just – the sides had drawn in the league
stages of the competition and the clashed in the final with the Lions
edging things 1-0 after extra time.
Anyway, enough of that babble and on with the main event – the
much awaited first league clash. The Lions started the brighter of the
two teams and pushed forward. There was some good passing involving
Matty Longstaff, Ethan Brown and Leon Nelson as the Lions pushed on,
but the first goal was spectacular. Luke Geddes picking the ball up
outside the box and firing a fantastic shot over the keeper and 1-0
to the Lions. Celtic came back into the game a grabbed a deserved equaliser
and then almost immediately went 2-1 ahead after some good play. Sam
Terrance in the Lions goal made two good saves to keep the team in the
game and steady his team mates nerves. Leon Nelson was in outstanding
form at the back and was partnered by Joe Conway, Ethan Brown and Matthew
Cartwright in effective defensive units. Connor Brown was causing trouble
for Celtic and the Lions pulled themselves back in the game when Matty
Longstaff expertly converted the equaliser. However, Celtic very quickjly
restored their three goal league. Going into the final quarter the Lions
couldn’t quite believe they were behind – they had played
some great football and created some good chances – but they felt
confident they would get something out of the game. Lewis Cass and Matthew
Cartwright both suffered injuries and had to be withdrawn. Their team
mates missed them and despite some pressure going forward, the Lions
seemed to lose their shape and passing ability. The strong wind was
a factor both sides and for the greater part of the game the Lions had
coped better, but the final quarter saw the balance swing the other
way. Celtic saw their opportunity and scored two good goals, taking
advantage of the Lions edginess.
The final result was 5-2 and the Lions heaviest defeat. However the
lads can be proud of themselves as for three quarters they played good
passing football, kept their shape and defended reasonably well. Both
teams contributed to a fantastic game of football. Another lesson learned
for the developing Lions - don’t worry lads we’ll bounce
back next week – we believe in you!!!!!!

Whitley Bay Boys Club Blues v North Shields Lions
This was an intriguing encounter with third v second place at the top
of the premier league. Whitley had given the Lions the blues earlier
in the season with a 2-0 victory – but the Lions had learned a
valuable lesson in how to deal with the “Wimbledon” of our
league – and the lads were also out for revenge.
The windy conditions again didn’t help, but the Lions showed
they were up for the task ahead from the off. Joe Conway took up the
centre midfield role for the first quarter and gave an astute performance
in the middle. The Lions had the better of the opening exchanges with
Ethan Brown and Matthew Cartwright looking to exploit the Blues down
the wings. Lewis Cass and Matthew Morley held things together at the
back – the only time they defence was breached Sam made a great
save. The Lions were playing the better football and deservedly took
the lead when Connor Brown broke free and hammered an unstoppable shot
past the Blues goalkeeper. Matty Longstaff and Luke Geddes joined the
fray and between then opened up the Blues defence on three occasions,
but weren’t able to get past the Whitley keeper. Ethan Brown and
Joe Conway took their turn in defence and held firm while Lewis Cass
pushed forward down the right. Into the third quarter and the Lions
had the majority of the possession, but weren’t able to extend
their lead. One long range shot from Matthew Morley skimmed inches over
the bar with the keeper well beaten.
The last quarter saw the Lions defending against the wind, but again
they played the better football. Matty Longstaff tested the Blues keeper
twice more but the lead remained at one nil. The Blues didn’t
give up and put the Lions under pressure with their long ball game –
however the Shields lads defended extremely well and with bravery. Matthew
Morley got an accidental head butt in the face, Joe Conway picked up
a sore knee and Lewis Cass played n despite a worsening cough. And then
it happened – the referee had added time on to allow an injured
Blues player to be treated and everyone was anxiously checking their
watches. The Lions had held firm against the high balls and had closed
down and marked the opposition superbly. A hopeful ball into the box
saw no Whitley players around and somehow the ball found its way over
the line – whether it was the wind or what no-one will ever really
know – it was just one of those things. The whistle blew as soon
as the Lions kicked off – the Blues parents were ecstatic –
they knew they had sneaked a draw and a point that was a bonus to them.
The Lions can hold their heads up high – they outplayed a team
who had beaten them previously and who were bigger and stronger. They
matched them physically and more importantly still played good football
– passing and moving well. Let’s keep this going lads and
you’ll continue to improve.
Well done Lions!!

North Shields Lions v Wallsend Boys Club Greens
After falling to defeat last week, the Lions came up against another
team who had beaten them last time out. In the last outing between the
sides the Greens sneaked a 2-1 win against a disappointed Lions side.
This time though the chests in the red shirts of North Shields were
bursting as they took to the field – they were determined there
would be no injustice today!
With a steely look in the eye, the Lions faced up to the Greens from
the off and went straight on the attack. Matthew Cartwright dazzled
down the left wing and Lewis Cass pushed forward down the right. Luke
Geddes made some fantastic runs into space and Matty Longstaff made
the most of Geddes’ runs – picking him out with some great
passes. At the back Joe Conway and Ethan Brown made some great tackles
to defy the Wallsend attack while Sam Terrance in goal gets better each
week. Each game is a tough game in the premier league and Sam is showing
his class in goal with good saves and confident distribution. No goals,
but both teams were giving their all – the referee was full of
praise for the football on display today. Matthew Morley and Connor
Brown stepped into the breach, with “Moo-Moo” not missing
a single tackle and captain Connor covering every inch of the grass
..er.. carpet ..er.. plastic surface from the centre of midfield.
Some great passing involving Matthew Cartwright, Connor and Lewis Cass
saw Wallsend stretched, but eventually cleared the ball to safety. The
Lions were beginning to dominate the game and needed to convert their
possession into goals and they did with a bang. First some good football
from the reds saw the ball break to Ethan Brown who lashed it home for
1-0 and great celebrations for the Lions. Keeping their positions as
Wallsend came back at them, the Lions showed how composure and good
passing football pays dividends. Sam Terrance picked the ball up from
another well defended Wallsend attack. He bowled it out to Joe Conway
who played a one-two with Luke Geddes and headed off on a mazy run down
the right. Instead of just smashing the ball, Joe took his time, got
his head up and passed a great ball into the box. Connor Brown had a
shot and it was saved, Ethan had a go and it was saved before the ball
came out to Matty Longstaff who turned and hammered the ball home for
2-0 and more celebrations for the Lions. Lewis Cass made a fantastic
rubber legs run past three defenders, only to see the Wallsend keeper
pull of a fantastic save and deny a deserved goal.
Matthew Cartwright took a knock on the ankle and bravely continued
for a while until he’d run his legs off. It wasn’t all North
Shields and Wallsend never gave up with some good pressure. The last
few minutes of the game seemed to be spent entirely in the Lions box
as about 4 corners in succession were swept goal wards. However, the
Lions showed their mettle with some excellent marking and determined
tackles. Sam Terrance making another outstanding save and Morley heading
a certain goal to safety over the bar (I know it hurt Matty but it was
superb!!). Ethan Brown took a ball straight in the nose and Joe Conway
made one huge clearance as all the Lions did their bit for the cause.
The game ended to loud applause from both sets of supporters and the
teams shook hands to finish off a sporting morning. Overall, this was
a good team performance with everyone playing for each other. This was
a pleasing accomplishment from the Lions and a good base for more tough
games coming up in the next few weeks.
Keep them coming - well done Lads!!

Cramlington Corinthians v North Shields Lions
The Lions faced the Corinthians for the second time this season. Last
time chasing the game at 2-1 to earn a point, the Lions were caught
out twice and ended up losing 4-1 – a score line that didn’t
truly reflect the game. This time around the outcome was the same but
a bizarre refereeing decision had a huge impact on the game –
more of that later.
Corinthians, favourites for the league, began strongly and put the
Lions on the back foot. They were rewarded for their pressure with a
well taken goal. The early set back was set aside as the Lions pushed
forward and muscled their way back into the game. Some determined play
from Lewis Cass in the middle of the park caused havoc for the Corinthians.
Cass played some delightful football and made some crunching tackles
in a move from right to left. Cramlington couldn’t cope with him
and resorted to a cynical foul to bring his run to an end. Ethan Brown
pushed on to take the free kick and he swung an excellent ball into
the box – first Matty Longstaff had an attempt and then Luke Geddes
forced the ball home for a deserved equaliser. The Lions grew in confidence
and pushed on again but the Corinthians defence held firm. Joe Conway
played well throughout the game and Sam Terrance in the Lions goal showed
he can make the right decisions when distributing the ball – throwing
or kicking at the right times.
The Lions coaches instil in their players a sense of respect –
never to question a referees decision – concentrate on your game
and always abide with officials decisions – never question a referees
decision – once the whistle blows get on with things quickly –
never question a referees decision. Anyway the Lions lined up for the
kick off quietly confident that this time they would get something out
of the Corinthians. The referee blew his whistle – everything
fine so far – and then it happened. One of the Cramlington players
– quite rightly and obviously eager to get on with the game pushed
forward – but tackled our player without the kick off being taken.
Everyone stopped for a while expecting the whistle to go – a hint
of concern began to rise. Cramlington continued on – players from
both sides weren’t sure what was happening as the game half carried
on – there was definitely something amiss at this point. The parents
looked at each other – the coaches were stunned – and Cramlington
put the ball in the back of the net. Obviously, it wasn’t a goal.
Hang on a second the referee pointed to the centre spot (well he sort
of waved his arm loosely in that direction) and the players trooped
back for another kick off. For once, and only once, Coach Brown felt
he had to ask the referee what was going on “excuse me referee
would you kindly explain that decision” was what was supposed
to come from his mouth however it could have been “normally ref
I don’t challenge decisions but what the *&%$@@)!£%^&^%!)_(*&@~{+!~:@_!&!£%$!())_+(!?><@
is going on?” Actually – it was a polite challenge and seriously
though there was a sense of unbelief (is that a word?), of utter incredulousness
as the referee looked towards the line form his one half decent eye,
shrugged his shoulders and blew his whistle “Play on”. The
Cramlington manager shook his head and spread his arms wide, but with
a strange smile on his face – his side were in the lead –
weren’t they? Anyway as I said – never question a referee’s
decision – it doesn’t get you anywhere. The Lions players
were fantastic - they didn’t challenge and got on with the game.
Connor Brown playing with a vengeance caused havoc, Luke Geddes and
Matthew Cartwright dazzled with their skills as the Lions looked for
the equaliser and Ethan Brown looked to push down the wing. Lewis Cass
(following four weetabix for breakfast) never missed a tackle and played
like a man who had forgotten to put his winning lottery numbers on.
Matty Morley, on his comeback game, didn’t miss a tackle and marked
the Cramlington number 8 (who by the way is off to Sunderland Academy)
out of the game. The third quarter saw Crammy extend their lead –
this time with a superb individual and well deserved goal. The Lions
didn’t give up and turned the possession around. Connor Brown
hit the post and then had a shot just wide as the Lions did their best
to get back into the game. Matty Longstaff took a bad knock and had
to leave the field – but came back bravely for the last quarter.
Into the last quarter and a last minute penalty was saved by the Corinthians
keeper to deny a second goal for the Lions. Cramlington broke free again
and did it again with a very well struck free kick for 4-1.
Overall the Lions can be very proud of themselves. They were not outplayed
by the Corinthians and created some excellent chances. Lads –
you still tried to play football and did what you are good at –
never giving in. It is great to win, but as long as you enjoy yourself
and do your best (and you did) that’s all that matters. The Lions
will take confidence from this performance – they could have won
the game – despite the bizarre decision it wasn’t down to
the referee (although it didn’t particularly assist – oops
sorry couldn’t help it) - but to a combination of circumstances
– posts hit, penalties saved, shots just wide, strong tackles,
great finishing from Cramlington and good football from both sides.
The beauty of football is that you never quite know what’s going
to happen next. What I do know is that next time we play this team they
will know they have been in a game (just ask their parents). What I
do know is that the Lions are a special team. What I do know is that
the Lions are a team who don’t rely on one or two players and
what I do know is that as long as we play football the right way and
continue as we are - we’ll have some fun along the way.
Come on the Lions.

North Shields Lions v Cramlington Santos
With two good games behind them the Lions had grown in confidence and
self belief. They are playing at their true level and will have some
challenging games to look forward to. Another game against another Cramlington
side and the lads must have been getting sick of the site of the opposition
red and white hoops – although hopefully they were not too keen
to see the all red of North Shields cross that touchline one more time.
The windy conditions for a second week in a row threatened to spoil
the game, but some expert coaching from Mssrs Brown and Cass showed
the lads how to deal with the force 10 gales!
What a start from the lads – they were 3-0 up by the end of the
first quarter with two fantastic goals from Connor Brown and a lethal
volley from Matthew Cartwright. So difficult were the conditions that
your correspondent found it hard to accurately record the events of
the game and on returning home was forced to rely on his (rapidly fading)
memory for the weekly match report. The incidents of note were mainly
centred on the Santos goal as the Lions pressed forward at almost every
opportunity. Sam Terrance mastered the art of staying warm in cold conditions
with some lovely movement around his box, while when Crammy did push
forward they were thwarted by the impressive duo of Leon Nelson and
Joe Conway. Ethan Brown was unlucky in the game – suffering badly
from the cold – he came on for the second quarter and after one
great cross his game was ended when a tackle from behind caught his
calf and he had to withdraw from the match.
Further goals were added by Lewis Cass, Matty Longstaff, Joe Conway
and Connor converted well for his hat-trick. Luke Geddes was unlucky
on three separate occasions as he made some fantastic runs into Santos
box, but was thwarted by the excellent keeper.
A good performance boys – you did well in the conditions.

Ponteland Juniors v North Shields Lions
The windy conditions were always going to make this a difficult game,
but both teams battled against the conditions to put in an excellent
performance for the watching crowd. Lewis Cass got in an early excellent
cross and then a superb move involving Connor Brown, Lewis and Matty
Longstaff, which ended in a great save by the Ponteland keeper. Ethan
Brown then had a shot just over the bar before combining well with Connor
and Lewis was again involved shooting just wide. Leon Nelson moved forward
and had a good shot and Matty Longstaff sent his effort just over the
bar. Ponteland were riding their luck and eventually matty put the Lions
ahead with a mazy run and slotted the ball home well. Within minutes
it was two when Connor smashed a shot against the bar and (so he claimed!)
was first to follow up ahead of the defenders to notch his 25th goal
of the season. Ponteland weren’t about to lie down and they came
back strongly into the game forcing a couple of corners. One couldn’t
be scrambled away and some how found its way over the line despite the
best efforts of Sam Terrance in the Lions goal. Almost immediately the
Lions restored their two goal lead when Matty Longstaff tucked home
a great chance. Again Ponteland came back at the Lions with the wind
at their backs – the Lions weren’t prepared to out in a
challenge and won most of the confrontations. Football though is a funny
game and Ponteland were back in it again when a cross was unfortunately
deflected in off the head on a Lions player who was again first to the
ball. However, not to be outdone, the Lions roared back once again and
with Luke Geddes causing problems for the Ponteland defence, North Shields
put the pressure on. First Connor Brown had a good effort, then Matty
Longstaff and finally the ball fell to Matthew Cartwright wide on the
left and his shot flew into the goal for 4-2.
The Lions still pushed forward as to sit back would have brought punishment
from a strong Ponteland side. Leon had a good efforst and Luke was unlucky
with ashot after being set up by Matty Longstaff. As the match drew
to a close Ponteland began to push to get back into the game, but Joe
Conway and Ethan Brown held firm at the back. Sam Terrance was confident
in goal, made difficult saves look easy and his handling was excellent
today. The Lions were quick on the break with Lewis Cass and Leon Nelson
both keen to get forward – even the defenders pushed on when they
could – Joe hitting the post and Ethan shooting just wide. But
the game finished as Ponteland pressed and forced 4/5 corners in a row.
This was another solid performance from the Lions as they showed their
attacking qualities (this time getting the goals their play deserved)
and demonstrated they could battle against strong opponents. Well done
lads – each week you’ve got tough opposition but as long
as you work hard, play good football and most importantly believe in
yourselves you’ll not go far wrong. C’mon the Lions.

North Shields Lions v Cramlington Barca
This was it – the big time. The top league, the best players
– fantastic we play our first game in the Premier League. The
parents were wary – not because they didn’t believe in their
sons, but the luck of the draw had pitched us with a 9am kick off every
week! There were some bleary (very bleary) eyes as the referees whistle
got things moving. Soon though, everyone’s eyes were open wide
as the two teams served up a great game of football. Barca had the early
pressure but Leon Nelson and Joe Conway held firm at the back and Sam
Terrance commanded his area. Matty Longstaff, Lewis Cass and Ethan Brown
were impressive in midfield while Luke Geddes did his usual intelligent
running and creating space. Nelson could have put the Lions ahead but
his shot was well saved and then Terrance showed his ability stopping
a dipping volley from the Cramlington forward. It was Barca that took
the lead when a left wing corner somehow found its way through the melee
of players in the box. The lead didn’t last for long as Ethan
Brown took the ball down the right wing and his low hard cross was expertly
turned in by top scorer Connor Brown for 1-1. Connor and Matty Longstaff
combined in a good move and Lewis has another good attempt. Matty Morley
pushed forward from his usual defensive position. As the game progressed
the Lions were always the team that looked more likely to score, but
couldn’t find their way through. Joe Conway, Ethan and Matty Longstaff
all had good efforts without finding the net, while Sam Terrance pulled
off another good save as Cramlington showed what they were capable of.
The teams couldn’t be separated and the Lions had passed their
first test. They played well, which was the important thing, and can
count themselves unfortunate not to have come away with all three points.
Excellent boys – well done!

North Shields Lions v Cramlington Corinthians
The stakes were high for this game – with the Lions losing two
of there last three games they needed a point against the undefeated
champions to be sure of their place in the Premier League when the new
leagues start. They could still qualify if they got nothing from the
game and other results went their way. In football you generally get
what you deserve and the coaches were quietly confident going into the
game – did they know something no-one else did? The lads were
eager to get started and both teams played some good football. The first
quarter was stalemate with both teams creating chances. Connor Brown
and Luke Geddes went close for The Lions while at the other end Sam
Terrance showed his class with two good saves. Joe Conway and Matthew
Morley were rocks at the back as the defence held firm. Into the second
quarter and Cramlington piled on the pressure and scored two goals in
quick succession to send the parents scurrying for their phones and
trying to find out how other games were going. The Lions though dug
deep and came back at the Corinthians – Matty Longstaff had a
good effort, followed up by Lewis Cass and Ethan Brown putting pressure
on the Cramlington defensive duo. Soon the Lions were back in the game
when Connor Brown expertly converted – game on. The third quarter
saw the Lions grow in confidence and had Crammy penned back for long
periods of time – although the Corinthians defended superbly and
created a few chances themselves. Matthew Cartwright was in good form
as he probed down the left wing – but the Lions couldn’t
get the breakthrough they needed. Into the final quarter and the Lions
threw caution to the wind and pushed for the elusive equaliser –
it almost came when Matty Longstaff received the ball on the edge of
the box and superbly turned his defender. His left foot shot was flying
into the corner of the goal when the Crammy keeper defied logic to turn
it around for a corner – what a save! Heartbreak was to follow
as firstly a superb individual goal extended the Corinthians lead and
then a bit of slack marking saw a free kick smashed home and all of
a sudden it was 4-1 and game over.
As I said earlier you get what you deserve in football and the Lions
have been superb from their first game through until this one. They
have learned some valuable lessons and have always played football in
the right way – looking for the pass and playing as a team. There
has been very little challenging of referees decisions and the lads
have been sporting all the way. We are all proud of you guys –
everyone one of you has been fantastic. The other results have gone
our way (well kept quiet coaches!) and from now on every game will be
like this – but don’t worry guys you will continue to get
better with every game. Roll on the premier League.

North Shields Lions v Wallsend Boys Club Greens
The Lions took on second place Wallsend in an early morning start at
Complete Soccer. Despite the early start the Lions were geared up for
the game and eager to get started. And it was a frantic start to the
game as both sides looked for early dominance. It was Wallsend though
that took the early lead after a period of pressure on the Lions goal.
The ball was well cleared by the Lions defence only to be smashed back
from outside of the box and the shot flew into the top corner giving
Sam Terrance no chance in the Lions goal. The Lions were doing well
with Matthew Cartwright and Lewis Cass on the wings looking to create
chances with Matty Longstaff probing in midfield. A resultant corner
was swung in from Ethan Brown and in rushed Lewis Cass who forced home
the equaliser for the Lions.
The game swung from end to end and in the second quarter it was Wallsend
who scored what turned out to be the winning goal. A corner was forced
just over the line by Kane Evans for the Greens to the delight of the
Wallsend supporters. The Lions didn’t lie down and did their best
to get back into the game. Matty Longstaff was leading from midfield
and well supported by Luke Geddes and Connor Brown pushing forward.
All the Lions lacked was the accuracy of the final ball or taking their
chances earlier, although Wallsend defended very well. The same can
be said of the Lions defence with Matthew Morley in commanding form,
letting nothing past him and Joe Conway playing out of his skin. The
defence played so well that Sam Terrance only had to make two more saves
– which he did with confidence.
Overall a disappointing result for the Lions, but not a bad performance
and another valuable lesson learned. Remember Lions you are good footballers
and a good team - you need to believe it – everyone else does!!

North Shields Lions v North Shields Tigers
It was derby day for North Shields as the Lions and the Tigers were
let out of their cages to face each other after the fixture had been
postponed twice before. The pitch at Collingwood View was in perfect
condition for football and the game got off exactly on time. Early on
Joe Conway came storming out of defence and had a great shot just wide
and Luke Geddes forced Tigers goalkeeper Nicholas Atkin into a fantastic
save. The Lions took the lead when Lewis Cass made a great run down
the right and crossed the ball for Connor Brown to turn home for 1-0.
Lewis Cass was turning it on on the wing and he sent Luke Geddes through
with a pinpoint pass – only to find Nicholas Atkin making another
fine save. Matthew Cartwright on the other wing was also in good form
– and he created the second goal when he played a short corner
1-2 with Luke and then pulled the ball back for Cass to turn goalscorer
with a tremendous shot that flew into the top of the goal. Then a pure
footballing move resulted in the third Lions goal – a superb interchange
between Matthew Cartwright, Luke Geddes and Matty Longstaff saw Geddes
round off the move and score.
The Tigers had showed what they were capable of with Josh Nichol, Thomas
Craig and Aaron Gordon looking dangerous. But again the Lions were showing
their class. Joe Conway in the middle of midfield sent Luke Geddes down
the wing who pulled the ball back for Matthew Cartwright to bang home.
Luke was involved again in the next goal putting in a great pass for
Ethan Brown who burst past two players and with just the keeper to beat
laid it off for Connor to nab his second. It was Joe Conway’s
turn to score next and his long shot deceived Nicholas in the Tigers
goal. The Tigers though responded superbly putting the Lions under pressure.
Firstly a great move saw Adam Harvey just inside the box and he hit
an unstoppable shot past Sam Terrance into the far corner. Aaron Gordon
added a second with a goal from a corner and the Lions were looking
rattled. They responded well and both Matty Longstaff and Matthew Cartwright
had chances. Sam Terrance took his turn at centre forward as Matthew
Cartwright donned the gloves and Terrance almost scored twice but was
denied by Nicholas again. The last word went to Matthew “Moo-Moo”
Morley when he turned in a corner to complete the scoring in an enthralling
encounter.
Credit to both sets of players today for an excellent performance that
had both sets of supporters cheering wildly. A good day for North Shields

North Shields Lions v Bedlington Milan
This was a frustrating day for the Lions as they suffered a defeat
at the hands of Bedlington Milan. The game started off okay for Shields
with Connor Brown and Lewis Cass combining well only to see Lewis’s
effort go just wide. Bedlington though were a strong side and they put
the pressure on the Lions defence. They weren’t able to break
down Joe Conway and Ethan Brown in the first quarter and there only
chance came from a free kick for a foul on the edge of the box. The
Lions escaped when the kick thumped against the bar and then away to
safety. Matthew Cartwright then put the pressure on Milan when his cross
was well saved by the Milan keeper. Into the second quarter and with
Leon Nelson off injured almost as soon as he got onto the pitch the
Lions suddenly found themselves 1-0 down with a goal that still has
everyone scratching their heads wondering how it ended in the back of
the net. Nevertheless the Lions still tried hard – Matty Longstaff
setting up Connor Brown whose effort was well saved. Ethan picked the
ball up from a Lewis short corner and his resultant shot was blocked
by the Bedlington keeper and the hacked away. Milan though weren’t
content to settle for their one goal lead and were keen to push forward,
but once again Matthew Morley was outstanding at the back – not
only making tackles, but beating players and distributing well. Once
again Sam Terrance judged things well at the back – commanding
his box and racing out his area when needed.
The Lions tried to get themselves back in the game today but despite
their efforts weren’t able to reach their normally high standards.
They did show what they were capable of with a superb passing move involving
Joe Conway, Matty Longstaff, Matthew Cartwright and Connor Brown, but
the final shot was charged down. In the closing stages the Lions did
try and up their game with Leon Nelson and Ethan Brown having shots
– Matty Longstaff superbly set up Connor Brown again but his effort
went wide. There was still time for Milan to hit the cross bar again
from another free kick and Sam was called on again to make a good save.
But it was not to be today as the Lions suffered their second defeat
of the season. Never mind lads - let’s get back on track next
week – we know you can do it. Let’s hear the LIONS

Whitley Bay Juniors Porto v North Shields Lions
Whitley kicked off this match and immediately showed their intentions
impressively trying to pass their way through the Lions defence. There
was tension before the game – the Preston Grange Primary School
players in the Lions side were up against some of their team mates who
were lining up for Porto. The players soon relaxed and both sides played
some excellent football as they battled for supremacy. Connor Brown
has a great shot that brought a fantastic save from the Juniors keeper.
The Lions slowly began to dominate the game and Ethan Brown had a great
run down the right and his cross just eluded his team mates. James Bromham
for Porto was having a good game in centre and he tested Sam Terrance
in the Lions goal with a solid shot from outside the box. Early in the
second quarter Ethan took the ball down the right wing again and this
time was stopped by a thunderous challenge from the Porto full back
– Ethan had to leave the pitch having picked up his first football
injury with a dead leg. Lewis Cass showed his skills and looked to bring
his team mates into the game as the Lions began to push looking for
the elusive goal. First Connor Brown forced the Porto keeper into a
great save and then Matty Longstaff was denied by a fantastic stop.
It looked as if it would take something special to beat this keeper
and that’s how it turned out. The Lions played the ball around
with Luke Geddes, Joe Conway and Matthew Morley involved in a good move
that found Connor Brown outside the box. The ball bounced in front of
him and Connor caught the ball with his left foot and sent a shot high
over the flailing keeper into the net. So confident was Connor he had
turned away, arm raised before the ball hit the back of the next –
a fantastic goal.
Lewis Cass had another shot as the Lions continued to dominate, but
Porto weren’t about to give up without a fight and caught their
opponents on the break on a number of occasions. Twice Sam Terrance
read the game well and superbly raced to the edge of his box to collect
the ball. On the others last man standing Matthew Morley was in fantastic
form making every tackle and then distributing the ball well to his
team mates. Joe Conway was supporting his forward team mates breaking
from defence and one shot from distance just skimmed past the post.
Ethan Brown returning to the game played a cross in and only the keeper
denied Lewis Cass, Matty Longstaff had a shot just wide and then set
Ethan up down the right, whose cross was just missed by Lewis.
The Lions were on a mission pushing forward and there was some superb
interplay between Matty Longstaff and Luke Geddes on the left. Geddes
in particular turning the Porto defenders inside out and then holding
the ball up superbly to bring his team mates into the game. In was incredible
that the Lions didn’t score again with Longstaff, Geddes, Cass
and Connor Brown all having chances saved by the Porto keeper. Lewis
Cass even hit the post form a corner. Porto began to think they had
the luck and began to press again in the closing minutes putting the
Lions under pressure. Three corners in succession had the Lions with
their backs to the walls as they frantically defended their goal –
but they managed to keep their opponents at bay and hang on for the
victory.
This was a good performance to go into Christmas with against very
strong opponents. The Lions won’t come up against many better
sides than Porto and should take confidence from the way they played.
They worked hard for the whole game - attacked, passed and defended
well and it if wasn’t for the Porto keeper the score could have
been more. Lads – it shows that you get what you deserve if you
play the game the right way and work hard. Well done boys – you’ve
sent everyone home happy for Christmas. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Cramlington Blue Star v North Shields Lions
The Lions turned up confident of the outcome of the game against the
bottom side in the division, despite the absence of defensive king pins
Joe Conway and Matthew Morley. However things didn’t turn out
exactly as planned. Firstly the Blue Star team turned up late and when
they did arrive they only had five players and no goalkeeper. To make
things even the Lions offered to play with the same number of players
and with Blue Star borrowing a goalkeeper the match eventually kicked
off with 6v6. And what a game it turned out to be. The referee has warned
beforehand that Blue Star had improved in recent weeks and they started
the game like championship contenders – playing with confidence
and a swagger not seen since the last North Shields Under 8’s
mothers night out. The team spirit of the Lions was evident though as
each of the players took their turn in defence replacing their missing
team mates.
The extra space on the pitch allowed open flowing football and once
they had got their bearings, the Lions got the measure of their opponents
and began to play some lovely passing football. Lewis Cass got the scoreboard
moving with a great volley to give the Lions the lead. Connor Brown
then had a shot just wide, while Matty Longstaff and Matthew Cartwright
combined for the first of many times in the game tearing the Blue Star
apart with some great one two passing moves. Cartwright had a good shot
saved by the Blue Star keeper and then followed up with a great volley
to make it 2-0 for Shields. Almost immediately Connor Brown broke free
and superbly beat the keeper for 3-0.
Leon Nelson is settling into the side nicely and with his confidence
growing became more dominant as the game progressed. He moved the ball
out of defence well with some good tackles and passing and ran with
the ball at the right time. Nelson moved forward and had a good shot
that tested the Blue Star keeper. Matty Longstaff hit the cross bar
s the Lions pressed forward and Ethan Brown converted the fourth for
the Lions when he beat his defender and slotted the ball under the goalkeeper.
The two Browns combined well and linked with Longstaff again. Cass
and Luke Geddes were causing havoc as Blue Star’s defence worked
over time, while Lions keeper Sam Terrance was once again a spectator
despite Blue Star pushing forward when they could. Geddes showed his
class with some great running off the ball, holding the ball intelligently
and bringing his team mates into the game. Terrance continued his vocal
approach to the game encouraging his team mates and telling the coaches
what to do. Like the first, the last goal of the game came from Lewis
Cass smashing the ball home from an acute angle to make it 5.
This was a strange game, with the Lions thinking it would be an easy
game and then being shocked by a sterling performance from Cramlington.
Eventually the Lions showed their skills and played some good football
and put in a solid performance. Good game boys now lets show you can
do it in more competitive games.

Ashington AFC v North Shields Lions
It was a cold and frosty morning as the players arrived to play in
a winter wonderland on an icy, slippy pitch at Complete Soccer. The
sun was bright and low in the sky – causing problems for Lions
goalkeeper Sam Terrance in the first quarter. In the absence of a cap,
Sam borrowed Fay Cartwright’s sunglasses to shade his eyes from
the sun, but had to return them soon after as the flashing lights, false
moustache and big nose kept putting the Lions opponents off. The Lions
started brightly with Matthew Cartwright jinking down the left hand
side. Cartwright sent in a great cross for Luke Geddes who put the ball
just wide of the post. Geddes battled hard against the Ashington defence
and his teasing cross was almost turned in by Lewis Cass. Leon Nelson
was in for the missing Matthew Morley and he excelled with a great game
in defence. Nelson put in a fine tackle to break up an Ashington attack
as the Northumberland outfit began to put the Lions under a bit of pressure.
It was the Lions defence that was dominating and it was a defender that
put North Shields ahead – Joe Conway linking up well with Geddes
and Cartwright to send a fantastic shot goal wards. The goalkeeper wasn’t
able to deal with it and it was1-0 to the Lions.
The Lions pressed forward and Ethan Browns cross set up Luke Geddes
whose shot was saved by the keeper. Brown took the resultant corner
and the keeper could only parry the powerful cross into his net. Move
of the match came next when Matty Longstaff picked the ball up, beat
two players and sent a pinpoint ball inside the full back for Matthew
Cartwright. Cartwright beat two players himself and crossed accurately
for Ethan Brown who smashed the ball home. 3-0. Longstaff turned provider
again when he set up Luke Geddes who looked up, steadied himself and
slammed a great shot home for 4-0. Lewis Cass and Matty Longstaff put
in strong tackles as Ashington never gave up. Connor Brown was next
on the score sheet as he scrambled the ball home following a Matthew
Cartwright cross. Ashington still never gave up and Sam Terrance first
made a good save and then had to come sprinting from his goal to make
a crunching tackle. Terrance looked up and sent Matthew Cartwright down
the line. Cartwright again put in a telling cross for Connor Brown to
turn in his second of the game. The Lions continued to press with Connor
Brown turning in another two goals to take his seasons total to an incredible
18 in 11 games.
This was a positive performance for the Lions as they played well in
difficult conditions. They tried to pass and they held their positions
for the whole game. There are some tough games coming up for the Lions
but they are learning all the time and a credit to themselves. Well
done boys!

Walker Central v North Shields Lions
Another 11am kick off for the Lions and this week Matthew Cartwright
was missing with Leon Nelson also not available. Nevertheless the lads
were ready to do battle and for once they were ready from the off –
putting Walker under pressure from the start. Early pressure saw Connor
Brown and Lewis Cass combine and then Luke Geddes caused problems for
the Walker defence. Walker held firm though and grew in confidence as
they held the Lions. Sam Terrance in the Lions goal decided to punt
for once after collecting a long through ball from the Walker defender
– and what a great kick it was – Matty Longstaff and Lewis
Cass combining and Longstaff calmly slotted the ball home for 1-0. Connor
Brown showed some great vision with a superb cross field ball and a
scramble in the Walker box saw the quarter end. For some reason the
Lions slackened off in the second quarter – still delivering some
good passes but not putting Central under too much pressure. Walker
looked good and were passing the ball as well as the Lions, but Ethan
Brown and Matthew Morley, in particular, were defending well to keep
Walker at bay. The Lions showed the benefit of quick thinking when Joe
Conway took a speedy throw in down the line for Lewis Cass who knocked
the ball through for Luke Geddes. Luke was in a difficult position,
but he beat two defenders and with his coaches screaming at him to pull
the ball back he calmly beat the keeper at the near post with a cool
finish – what do we know anyway! 2-0.
Walker didn’t lie down and came back at North Shields and Sam
Terrance made one fantastic save to keep out the Central attacker. The
Lions continued to put Walker under pressure, but were not able to create
many more clear chances. The Lions are encouraged to make early decisions
and one brief moment of hesitancy was punished as Walker capitalised
and with a fantastic one touch passing move got themselves back in the
game 1-2. The Lions needed something to stir them again and the goal
roused them and they restored their two goal lead within minutes. Matty
Longstaff sent the ball through to Connor Brown who expertly finished
into the corner. Ethan Brown had a great run down the wing and his superb
cross was almost turned in at the far post by Connor. Walker came back
at the Lions, but Matthew Morley was in no mood to let them past –
he either smashed the ball away or took his time and played the ball
to one of his team mates. Joe Conway made some good runs forward and
brought his team mates into the game. The coaches were slightly frustrated
after the game as they felt the Lions didn’t do themselves justice
today, but in hindsight Walker were a good team who not only made it
difficult for the Lions, but also passed the ball well.
The Lions wrapped the game up in the final quarter with Longstaff again
setting up Connor Brown who showed his class by finishing well.
Overall – the Lions showed what they are capable of during the
game.
Lions – you are fantastic footballers – more importantly
you are all great lads. You can pass – you can tackle –
you can defend – you can score – you try and do things the
right way – COME ON THE LIONS - lets keep on
enjoying your football – remember your coaches are old men (and
your parents aren’t so young either!) and we need to see your
exciting football every week to keep us warm in the cold winter weather!!!!
Well done guys.

North Shields Juniors Lions 0 Whitley Bays Boys Club Blues 2
The Lions were tamed against ferocious opponents in Sundays Division
A game. Joe Conway was missing and new signing Leon Nelson was added
to the squad for his debut. Whitley Bay were a big strong outfit and
started the game by putting the Lions under pressure. The Lions however
recovered from their initial shock and were able to contain their opponents,
although weren’t able to make much headway going forward. The
term bulldozer and juggernaut are not heard often at mini soccer but
Whitley Bay came at the Lions like the 11.45 express train to Doncaster
half an hour late. All credit to the Lions as they realised they had
a fight on their hands but physically they struggled against their stronger
opponents. North Shields began to find their way and some good play
involving Luke Geddes and Connor Brown just failed to open up the Blues
defence.
Just when it looked like the Lions were getting the measure of their
opponents, Whitley Bay took the lead with a well worked goal that flew
in through a crowd of players. North Shields rallied and Leon Nelson
looked impressive in his first game pushing forwards down the right
wing. Matty Longstaff battled away in midfield and caused confusion
as he turned right, then left and then right again only to find himself
surrounded by two Neanderthals hungry for their tea (only kidding lads!).
Whitley kept pressing and Sam Terrance in goal made one fantastic save
to keep the Blues to one goal and Matthew “Beckenbuar” Morley
made challenge after challenge to thwart the Whitley warriors. The Lions
could have been level when Ethan Browns free kick from outside the box
thumped against the cross bar with the keeper stuck on his line. Matthew
Cartwright caused havoc down the left as he danced passed his defender
while a good move involving Longstaff and Nelson almost produced a breakthrough.
Lewis Cass responded to the physical challenge well and used his skills
well to move the ball out of defence.
The Lions players were slightly frustrated with Whitley’s tactics
as they felt they were fouled every time they made a break – but
to their credit they never complained and just got on with it. Ironically
it was from a free kick that Whitley extended their lead – the
centre midfielder sending a twice taken free kick scorching into the
top of the goal from neat the half way line.
The Lions began to feel a sense of injustice and pushed forward again
- Connor Brown knocking three corners in a row into he danger zone and
then Ethan Brown scraping the bar with another corner. You could tell
it was not the Lions day when Brown hit the cross bar for the third
time. On this occasion the ball smacked against the bar and bounced
down - any self respecting Russian linesman would have given a goal
– but not today.
The Lions were a credit – they never backed down from the physical
challenge and were the team that tried to play football. Remember at
this age its not about winning its about having fun, learning about
the game and developing as footballers. Good luck to the Blues, but
to the watching spectators there was only one team who will benefit
in the longer term from the game. Come on you Lions!!!!!!!!!!!!

North Shields Cougars v North Shields Lions
The first North Shields derby for the Lions was a tense affair with
both teams eager for the contest to begin. A large crowd had gathered
for the occasion and the atmosphere was white hot as the Cougars got
the game underway. The Lions soon put the Cougars under pressure but
the Cougars defence held firm with some good defending by Leon Snowdon
and Joseph Connor in particular. The breakthrough for the Lions came
when Ethan Brown’s corner was slotted home by Matthew Cartwright.
Connor Brown was looking dangerous for the Lions and was unlucky when
his shot hit the post, as did Ethan just a minute later. Lewis Cass
and Matthew Cartwright played some good football for the Lions while
Josh Finlay showed his class with some good play. Matty Longstaff and
Ethan Brown combined well and forced a corner, which Connor Brown converted
for 2-0. Matthew Morley was in commanding form today and he let nothing
get past him, making tackle after tackle. The Lions pushed forward but
there was some more excellent defending from the Cougars with Josh Nandy
putting in some crunching tackles. Following a goal mouth scramble Connor
was on hand to snatch his second goal and almost grabbed his hat-trick
when his next shot went just wide. Sam Terrance in the Lions goal was
busier than usual, but once again demonstrated his prowess with some
confident goalkeeping. Sam looked to bring his team mates into the game
with good throws and improving kicks.
Evan Suddick made a great run through the middle for the Cougars, but
the Lions defence held firm. Lewis Cass forced a good save from Ryan
Scorfield in the Cougars goal. Joe Conway showed some great skill to
break out of defence and pushed forward, then Luke Geddes broke free
from the Cougars defensive shackles to slot home number 4 for the Lions.
Goal of the game came next when Ethan Brown slung in another corner
and Matty Longstaff soared above everyone else to smash a backwards
header into the net. Matthew Morley showed his own bit of skill with
a great turn and dribble out of defence to set up another attack.
The final quarter saw Cougars look to get something with Ronan Dunwoodie
going on a great run through the Lions defence, but a last ditch tackle
from Matty Longstaff kept the Lions clean sheet. The Cougars cross bar
was rattled again and eventually Joe Conway grabbed a deserved goal
with a positive run and shot to complete the scoring.
The teams congratulated each other at the close of the game and the
spectators gave them a rousing cheer as they left the pitch. Well done
to both teams – everyone was proud of you today.

Guidepost Juniors v North Shields Lions
If music is the food of love then play on said the DJ, playing the
music blaring from the pitch side disco as the Lions took to the field
at the start of the match. Despite the noise the Lions started off attacking
their opponents with Connor Brown hitting the woodwork twice in the
early stages of the game. The first a great shot that struck the post
and then being set up by a defence splitting pass from Lewis Cass that
the Guidepost keeper pushed onto the cross bar. The Lions hit the right
note for the first goal when Matty Longstaff sent Lewis Cass down the
right for Cass to whistle past two defenders and beat the keeper at
the near post. Ethan Brown then had a great run down the left and his
shot buzzed past the post. Connor Brown finished the first quarter with
another shot that was stopped by a great save by the Guidepost keeper.
Lewis Cass orchestrated the next goal, when after a great run down
the right he pulled the ball back for Matty Longstaff to drum the ball
home. Matthew Cartwright, not to be out done, went on a mazy run down
the left and put in a great cross that the Guidepost defence managed
to clear. The ball reached Matty Longstaff who looked up, picked his
spot and smashed superb shot into the corner of the net for 3-0. Longstaff
and Connor Brown played in harmony as they taunted the opposition defence,
but Ethan Brown was on tune and he caught everyone out when his spectacular
shot from the half way line flew into the top corner of the Guidepost
goal. The Lions were rampant by now and Joe Conway went on the first
of a number of mazy runs only to see his shot fly just wide, Longstaff
hit a shot just wide and Connor Brown’s melodic effort was pushed
away once again by the keeper. It looked like Connor was destined not
to score today as his next chance was saved by the keeper once again.
However, in football you generally get what you deserve and Brown composed
himself to start a fantastic move involving Longstaff, Matthew Cartwright
and Ethan Brown and then finished the move himself for a well deserved
goal. Matty Longstaff was on fire and could have scored twice more as
the Lions roared forward, while Ethan Brown caused problems down the
right wing and crossed for Matthew Cartwright to make it 6. The Guidepost
keeper had a tremendous kick that put the Lions defence under pressure,
but super keeper Sam Terrance was on the ball collecting the long punts.
Sam decided to reverse the tide and struck the right chord when his
own kick was knocked on by Ethan for Connor to sprint past two defenders
and smash home a fantastic shot for number 7. It was Ethan’s turn
next as he cut in from the left and hit a great shot across the goal
which smashed against the far post and then bounced in off the unfortunate
defender.
The loud musical distraction clearly had no impact on the Lions as
they played some great football, although Matthew Morley’s break
dancing and Sam Terrance’s air guitar were impressive. Into the
final quarter and the Lions were on a roll – Lewis Cass produced
another fantastic bit of football when he ran down the right beating
two players and cracking a superb shot into the net. Matthew Cartwright
was a star performer and made it 10 - the proceeded to score another
one immediately to complete his hat-trick. Matty Longstaff composed
his own hat-trick a minute later and not to be outdone Joe Conway conducted
himself well and turned on the style to make two delightful runs through
the opposition defence and smash home two goals. Joe then showed why
team work is so important with another run through the middle of the
park – this time playing the ball wide to Lewis Cass who put in
another cross to put the Guidepost defence into turmoil. Then up stepped
defender turned striker Matthew Morley to collect the ball and side
step two defenders, in perfect harmony to strike the ball home for goal
of the game.
Overall this as a good performance from the Lions – for most
of the game they where on song and tried to play football. Their passing
was great to watch at times and there were some fantastic goals as well.
Fantastical !!!

North Shields Lions v Blyth Town Whites
Luke Geddes was missing from the squad today as he jetted off on international
duty but the rest of the squad declared themselves available for selection.
A very tight game produced a fair result as the Lions came up against
a very determined Blyth Town side. The Lions started strongly but couldn’t
break down their Northumberland opponents. Blyth came more and more
into the game and began to create chances. Some great defending by Matthew
Morley kept his side in the game, while Sam “The Cat” Terrance
pulled of a couple of great saves. Joe Conway tried to turn defence
into attack with some great runs, but it was Blyth that took the lead
with a well worked goal. This shook the Lions and they responded well.
Ethan Brown outsprinting the Blyth full back and crossing for Matthew
Cartwright to score a lovely goal. Matty Longstaff was doing his best
to run the game from midfield while Lewis Cass did everything he could
despite being played out of position by his coach (well done Lewis).
The Lions grew in confidence and took the lead when Connor Brown notched
his 7th goal of the season and the Lions looked on target for another
win. The Shields boys though weren’t able to turn their chances
into goals and Blyth came back and scored a great equaliser in the final
quarter. The Lions pushed again and chances fell to Longstaff. Both
the Browns and Cass had chances and Matthew Morley went so close, but
the Blyth defence held out and hold on for a deserved point.
Another point for the Lions who have shown they can play really well
over the season so far. Lets keep and trying and enjoying it lads –
we’re all proud of you.

North Shields Lions v Cramlington Juniors Celta
The Lions put in another good performance against a strong Cramlington
Juniors side at Complete Soccer. Early in the game Lewis Cass combined
well with Connor Brown whose shot went wide. Defender Joe Conway then
surged forward only to see his long shot go just wide. A great move
from the Lions saw Cass pull the ball back from the bye line and Matthew
Cartwright cracked a thundering shot that smashed back off the cross
bar and was cleared by the Celta defence. It wasn’t all North
Shields and Celta pushed forward looking to take the lead, but a great
save from keeper Sam Terrance kept the scores level. Early in the second
half another good save from Sam Terrance kept Celta at bay. Both teams
were creating chances and Luke Geddes, in fine form again, made the
Cramlington keeper make a good save. Matty Longstaff also had a good
effort, Geddes put in a great pass for Cass who was unlucky and Geddes
himself was then dispossessed after a great run. With no goals in the
first two quarters it was going to take something special to break the
deadlock and the Lions put their opponents under pressure but couldn’t
find a breakthrough. Lewis Cass broke up a Celta attack with a fantastic
tackle. Ethan Brown and Cass combined well and Matthew Cartwright caused
havoc. Cartwright played the ball out wide to Brown who beat his player
and hit a scorching drive across the goal and into the far corner for
1-0. The celebrations hadn’t died down when Celta got straight
back into the game when scoring straight from the kick off. A mazy run
from the centre forward saw him beat everyone and coolly slot the ball
home for an immediate equaliser.
Going into the last quarter the game was evenly poised, but it was
the Lions that began to dominate. Ethan Brown made another good run
down the right and his low cross was turned in by Matty Longstaff to
restore the Lions lead. Longstaff and Connor Brown combined well next
to set up Ethan whose shot was well saved as the Lions turned up the
heat. Joe Conway played his game well, holding his position well and
breaking forward from defence to support his midfielders at the right
times. Matthew Morley was again in commanding form and time after time
denied Celta by breaking down their attacks with some fine tackling.
Morley then used his head well to either play in one of his team mates
or hit a long clearance. So confident was Matthew that he was able to
keep warm (and keep the crowd entertained) when his team mates were
on the attack with a series of exercises including press ups and leg
stretches! Goal of the game came next as the Lions were awarded a free
kick outside the box. Up stepped Connor Brown who smashed an unbelievable
drive into the top corner – a fantastic goal that had the crowd
gasping. The scoring was wrapped up when Ethan Brown claimed his second
when his left wing cross was deflected just over the line by the Celta
keeper.
Overall this was another good performance from the Lions – to
a man they played as a team (!). Some of their passing was a joy to
watch and the lads did themselves proud again. Well done boys –
lets keep on enjoying it.

Blyth Rangers Deportivo v North Shields Lions
A strong and physical Blyth side gave The Lions their toughest test
of the season so far. The Lions pressed early on, but the Rangers defence
held firm to keep the North Shields Lads at bay. It took a piece of
Matty Longstaff “hokery pokery” to break down the Blyth
defence and he scored a wonderful goal to give The Lions the lead. However,
not to be outdone Blyth came straight back at Shields and a huge long
kick from the keeper bounced all the way to Sam Terrance’s goalmouth
and in the resulting melee the Blyth attacker struck the ball home well.
The game stayed a stalemate for a while as Lions pressed, Blyth defended
well and attacked North Shields on the counter attack. Again the defensive
pairing of Matty “Moo-Moo” Morley and Joe Conway held firm
with support from Ethan Brown and Lewis Cass. Luke Geddes was under
the weather, but that didn’t stop him putting in a superb performance
– twisting and turning and causing the Blyth defence all sorts
of problems. Lewis Cass eventually restored the Lions lead with a well
taken goal and was then instrumental in a fantastic third goal. Cass
took a throw in to Connor Brown who played a great 1-2 passing move
with Matthew Cartwright – the ball was then laid off to Ethan
Brown who scorched the ball home for 3-1. In the final quarter Brown
notched his second of the game and Matthew Cartwright made it 5 with
another well taken goal. Matty Longstaff and Luke Geddes were both unlucky
with chances while Joe Conway had two great runs that tormented the
Rangers defence and was unlucky not to result in a goal. Special mention
must go to Connor Brown who excelled today and covered the whole of
the pitch when placed into midfield – well done Connor.
Throwing caution to the wind towards the end of the game (at the managers
approval I must add!) the Lions were caught out with a fast breakaway
from Blyth and despite the brave efforts of the ever dependable Sam
Terrance the ball sneaked in off one of our defenders. Final Score 5-2,
but more importantly some fantastic football at times from the players.
Best bit of the day – one of the parents of the Blyth players
came over at the end of the game to say how much he enjoyed how the
Lions played and how well they passed the ball – fantastic lads
– Proud of ya - Keep it going!!

North Shields Lions v Newcastle City Rangers
The Lions grabbed their second win of the season in an exciting match
against Newcastle City Rangers. The Lions dominated most of the game
but came up against very well organised and determined opponents. The
Lions pressured early on and chances fell to Luke Geddes and Connor
Brown. The deadlock was broken by Ethan Brown who screamed a shot in
from wide and it looked like the Lions would go on to win by a margin.
However the Rangers defence held firm and threatened on a few occasions.
But once again the defensive pairing of Joe Conway and Matthew Morley
were outstanding. Taking their turns in defence Ethan Brown and Lewis
Cass played their part in keeping out any goals from open play. The
best move of the game resulted in North Shields extending their lead.
Some great passing in midfield ending with a superb pass across the
goal from Lewis Cass; and Connor Brown finding space superbly for a
tap in.
The half time team talks are quite challenging with the under 8’s.
Encouragement such as “keep passing and moving” and “great
shooting” (sorry to give our coaching secrets away!) are generally
put to one side while the right numbered water bottle is found, the
odd nose is picked and the cloud that looks like a horse is pointed
out.
However, back to the game and further chances fell to Matty Longstaff
who bamboozled the Rangers defence with his dribbling and Connor Brown..
Keeper Sam Terrance watched for most of the game, but the sign of a
good keeper is one who stays alert at all times and Sam was always ready
to make a save, catch a cross or distribute the ball to his team mates.
Rangers got back into the game when a penalty was awarded and the striker
smashed a great effort home. The Lions, not to be outdone, soon restored
their 2 goal when left foot wizard Matthew Cartwright smashed the ball
home following some good play. Matthew Morley and Joe Conway chose to
get forward and support their attacking team mates at the right time
and the rest of the lads got back to help out in defence when needed.
All in all this was a good performance from the Lions who can be proud
of themselves once again. Coaches Mark and Simon will be pleased when
the bar eventually opens at Complete Soccer and they can try and put
the half time team talks out of their mind! Well done lads another great
effort.

Tynemouth United v North Shields Lions
The Lions kicked off their first competitive match at Under 8’s
with a solid performance against newly formed Tynemouth United. The
league venue is now at the impressive Complete Soccer with all games
being played on the new 4G artificial surface.
Both teams took a little time to find their feet on the new surface,
but it was the Lions that roared ahead and start what turned out to
be an impressive performance. Connor Brown netted first for the Lions
before Joe Conway extended their lead by the end of the first period.
The Lions tamed their opponents with some excellent play – passing
well and holding their positions. Luke Geddes and Ethan Brown both grabbed
hat-tricks while Connor Brown and Matty Longstaff bagged four apiece
as the Lions ran riot. Lewis Cass turned from goal maker to goal taker
to smash in a great goal and Matthew Cartwright got the goal his performance
deserved. To their credit Tynemouth never let their heads drop and battled
throughout the game. Lions keeper Sam Terrance had little to do but
was constantly heard encouraging his team mates and came galloping out
of his goal at one stage to make a great tackle. Joe Conway and Matthew
Morley were again outstanding in defence making sure that “The
Cat” wasn’t called upon too much. “Moo-Moos”
passing was superb as he played his team mates in time after time –
so much so that the credit for the Tynemouth own goal could only be
given to Matthew.
The temptation was for the Lions to go charging forward at every opportunity,
but for the majority of the game held their positions well and demonstrated
some great passing moves. The lads did themselves proud both with their
football, as they showed that can play as a team, and their sporting
behaviour by respecting their opponents throughout the game. Both teams
left the field to a great round of applause from all parents and spectators.
A great first game - lets make sure we continue to enjoy the football
– well done boys.
Man of the Match – Matty Longstaff.
