20/04/08 - NABC U15s League Match
Whitley Bay 5 North Shields 0
For 25 minutes of this match Shields were the dominating side. Up front,
Tom Farrar and Colin Bell were preventing controlled ball coming out
into the Whitley Bay midfield. And the home side simply couldn't get
going. And when ever a threat to the back four appeared, man of the
match Declan haswell snuffed it out.
And then a goal from a set piece. Hunter heading in unchallenged from
a corner. One became two minutes later and then the wheels came off.
Their more powerful opponents simply brushed Shields aside from then
on. Nial Piper in goal kept the score semi respectable with a string
of excellent saves. Jake Pirie also did well when he came on. It was
difficultvery much credit to any other player. Pity after what was such
a promising start.
13/04/08 - NABC League Match
North Shields U15 4 Montagu U15 2
Shields edged it against Montagu in last week's County Cup semi final
and the visitors arrived with a determination to even the score. But
Shields were quickest to settle into their best form. With everything
going through Tom Farrar up front, chances were coming along at regular
intervals. Two were taken inside the first 20 minutes by Colin Bell
and the excellent Arrun Murfiin. Jordan Bell was also unlucky to smash
a belter off the inside of a post and see it fly harmlessly clear.
Then Montagu struck back. Smith scored following some defensive indecision.
Then minutes later Johnston rifled one in to send the teams into half
time all square.
The second half was a tough affair. Neither side gave any quarter. But
the hard working Colin Bell scored a third and Tom Culverhouse got the
clincher.
Tom Farrar got man of the match for a superb display of centre forward
play. But the award could easily have gone to Jordan Bell or even Jordan
Alcock for their quality in midefield.
06/04/08 - U15s NYPCA Cup Semi Final
North Shields 3 Montagu 1
On this bitterly cold, wet Spring day, ten man Montagu stood between
Shields and another appearance in the County Cup Final. Despire being
a man short, the sprightly visitors were in no mood to roll over. Shields
played some excellent football in the first twenty minutes but couldn't
apply the killer touch until Tom Culverhouse got on the end of Colin
Bell's cut back to tap home. Then with minutes of the first half remaining
the Montagu right winger latched onto a through ball and lobbed the
Shields keeper from 30 yards. 1-1 on the half time whistle.
The second half went much the same as the first. Gibson and Allcock
totally dominated the central midfield. Finally, Tom Culverhouse was
on hand again to round his man and slot home past the keeper. Culverhouse
got his hattrick when he headed in a fine cross from the left. Colin
Bell was named man of the match but Adam Gibson and Tom Farrar must
have run him close.
30/03/08 - U15s NYPC Cup Qurter Final
RHF Comets 1 North Shields 4
The was a match dominated by high winds ad difficult playing conditions.
Up against it in the first half, Shields scored a crucial goal after
just 30 seconds when Tom Farrar latched onto a through ball and used
his strength to get his shot away. The ball ended up in the net and
the half ended 1-0 to Shields.
With the wind at their backs, it was all Shields in the second half
and striker Colin Bell capped another impressive man of the match display
with a brace. The first from a free kick and the second from one of
his trade mark drives into the area capped by a fine finish.
Substitute Lewis Summers did well when he came on and scored an ecxellent
goal to make the score sheet look really confortable at 4-1. Adam Gibson
continued his fine form in midfield as did Arron Murfin at right back.
On to the semis.
16/03/08 - NABC League Match U15s
North Shields 2 Newburn 1
Shields were on the wrong end of a thrashing in this fixture last year.
But it's a measure of the team's character and how far they've come
in recent months, that they beat their great rivals on Sunday. To win,
Shields had to stop Newburn's excellent centre half from running the
show. To that effect, manager Alan Gibson played Tom Farrar up front.
The two big men went head to head and neither gave an inch all afternoon.
It was a fabulous battle to watch.
Meanwhile, Colin Bell earned Shields a first half penalty with a trade
mark run into the box. Man of the match, Adam Gibson, made no mistake
from the spot. Jordan Alcock showed his class with another excelllent
display in midfield. And Jordan Bell was again fantastic. Indeed, it
was no surprise when he got on the end of a cute pass from Tom Farrar
to lash home the second.
Newburn pulled a goal back late in the second half after the defence
momentarily switched off and Shields were forced into "hang on"
mode. They just about made it to the final whistle.
09/03/08 - North Shields U15s 0 Grainger Park
U15s 0
It's rare for a game in this age group to end goalless. But in truth
this match was a dull affair and it was no coincidence that the two
managers nominated their opponent's centre halves for man of the match.
Shields set off slowly but Grainger Park failed to capitalise. Only
Glen Critchlow and Jordan Alcock looked up for it from the whistle.
But neither side created a single chance in the first half.
The second half was better but chances remained at a premium. Centre
back Tom Farrar was commanding in the air at the back and deserved his
man of the match acolade for Shields. But Grainger might have won it
with the last kick of the game. A hopeful punt landed on top of the
crossbar and fell into the grateful arms of keeper Niall Piper. A bonus
for Shields was the excellent form of returning full back, Jake Pirie.
Good to see him bacjk following a long period of injury.
02/03/08 - NACYP Cup Match
Longbenton 0 North Shields 2 (Goals 2 from Will Marsh)
This game was played in blustery conditions between two sides three
divisions apart in the NABC league. But Longbenton were far from overwhelmed
by Shields until the final ten minutes of the match. Shields are the
holders of this cup and were loking to advance into the next round.
Sure enough, Shields created a hatful of first half chances without
being at their best. But opportunities went begging. The pressure of
going into the second half level created a nervous tension in Shields'
game. It took a man of the mathch performance from big centre back,
Tom Farrar, to keep the sheet clean. And then two typical goals from
super sub, Will Marsh. He danced all round the Longbenton defence on
two occasions before squeezing in two tight chances.
24th Feb 2008 - North Shields 1 Cramlington Juniors 3 (Goal
Scored by Chris Summerson)
How close will Shields come to beating Crammie in the league than this?
With ten minutes to go the game was heading for a respectable draw.
Shields had been excellent. Jordan Alcock made a brilliant debut and
got man of the match. Arron Murfin was also excellent again. And a make
shift defence more than held their own. With Colin Bell giving a man
of the match performance from centre half. How cruel then that Shields
lost the game to two late howlers. Credit to Crammie though, they are
very adept at getting wins in games against Shields right at the death.
Under 15 - 10th Feb 2008 - North Shields 1 V Wallsend 3
(League) (Goal scored C. Bell)
This was a great game between to very close sides. Wallsend took a
first half lead but the excellent Colin Bell pulled it level before
half time. There was little between the sides in the second half but
Wallsend sneaked two in the last ten minutes to edge it.
Adam Gibson was man of the match. He gave another powerful display
from the engine room. New boy Callum Denham looks to be a terrific acquisition
at right back./ And Jordan Bell was brilliant as ever.
27/01/08 - NABC League 1 U15s
Bumersund 1 North Shields 3
This was the second of back to back games between these two sides.
Shields won comfortably last week but Bomersund made a better fist of
this game. Shields began strongly with Colin Bell rampant. He slotted
in from a tight angle after five minutes and made it two on twenty minutes
with a well taken goal. Man of the match Jordan Bell was pulling all
the strings in midfield and Glen Critchlow was also strong in the centre.
Arron Murffin was excellent at the back for Shields.
A fabulous run into the box just after half time saw Bell lay on a
sitter for fellow striker Tom Farrar which was gratefully accepted.
Then Farrar was brought down clinically when clean through but the referee
waved play on.
Bumersund never gave up and scored a well deserved consolation goal
near the end. Smith heading in after the referee over ruled the linesamn's
offside flag.
20/01/08 - NABC U15s Division 1 League Match
North Shields 6 Bomersund 0
Shields have been in excellent form since the turn of the New Year
and this week Bomersund were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat.
It was master minded by man of the match Adam Gibson. Having added a
new motor in recent weeks he was in turbo teriffic form. His delightful
dead ball kick into the box after just ten minutes saw Bell get the
first of his hat trick. And Gibson scored one of his own in the second
half from a delighfully struck free kick. Jordan Bell got in on the
act next when his long shot found its way into the far corner. Then
Will Marsh hit a beauty of his own.
Shields might have had a few more, but they will be pleased with keeping
a clean sheet. New signing Callum Denham and the ever improving Aron
Murfin played well at the back. Shields will be licking their lips at
the thought of next week's return league match at Bomersund as they
look to climb the table.
13th January 2008
Cup Semi Final: North Shields 1 Wallsend 2
Scorer: Gibson
How unlucky. Shields played brilliantly and deserved at least a draw
from this match. They lost their keeper before the match and it enabled
Wallsend to get a soft first goal. Instead of crumbling, Shields pressed
hard on their surprised opponents. Gibson having a blinder and Farrar
playing really well up front to keep thier defence under pressure. A
Wallsend second shortly after half time however, left Shields with a
lot to do. But Gibson hit a trade mark free kick into the top right
hand corner and it was game on.
Unfortunately, Shields didn't get the equaliser their play deserved.
Aron Murfin got man of the match following another excellent display.
1st December 2007
League Match: Blyth 3 North Shields 3
Scorers: J Bell; Farrar; Gibson
This was a cracker. Blyth's excellent attacking play took them into
a 3-1 lead. Despite Shields taking the lead with a belter from the excellent
Jordan Bell. The game turned in the last 10 minutes when Tom Farrar
was put up front. He scored the second goal and then wreaked havoc carving
out chances at will. Gibson hit a beauty to equalise. And Shields would
surely had gone on to win had the ref not abandoned the match with two
minutes to go following a horror injury to a Blyth player. He went down
in agony with no one near him having tweaked his knee badly. We wish
him a speedy recovering.
25th November 2007
League Match - North Shields 2 Wallsend 6
Scorers: Gibson (pen) and Critchlow
Shields were brought down to earth following recent good cup runs.
Wallsend giving the lads six of the best. Yet Shields went one ahead
from the spot. Gibson making no mistake with the penalty. And the Wallsend
equaliser, minutes before half time, came from a very genourously awarded
direct free kick. The excellent Jordan Alcock netting for Wallsend.
A second before half time led to the floodgates opening and Shields
were swept away in the second half. Critchlow got a consolation goal
though in the second half.
The excellent skipper was named man of the match. Well done Declan
Haswell.
18th November 2007
Cup Match - North Shields 7 Tynemouth 0
Scorers: Culverhouse 5 Marsh 1; Critchlow
Tom Culverhouse took full advantage of lower league opposition in this
cup match, scoring another five goals. His pace was far too much for
a game Tynemouth to handle and he deservedly got named man of the match.
Will Marsh scored with a header and Glen Critchlow also got one.
11th November 2007
Cup Match: Morpeth 2 North Shields 9.
Scorers: Culverhouse 4; Farrar 1; Anderson 1; J Bell 1 and Marsh 2
This match turned out to be a stroll in the park against lower league
opposition. But for much of the first half, Shields could not convert
their superiority into goals. Culverhouse opened the scoring but Morpeth
equalised ten minutes fbefore half time. But Tom Farrar made it 2-1
at half time with a header from a corner. The flood gates opened in
the second half. Tom Culverhouse ended up scoring four goals. Will Marsh
got two and Calvin Anderson and Jordan Bell also scored.
Adam Gibson was named man of the match having made significant contributions
to most of the goals scored.
04/11/07 - Cramlington Juniors 3 North Shields
0
Cramlington were mighty relieved to get these three points. It was
0-0 with ten minutes to go and, in truth, Shileds looked comfortable
for a point. But from an unlucky miskick from the otherwise brilliant
Shields keeper, Cramlington took the lead, As is so often the case,
one goal quickly became three.
Man of the match Declan Haswell defended like the skipper he is and
Lewis Summers played a blinder up front. Wth Calvin Anderson showing
his full range of skills and Jordan Bell also showing strongly, the
final whistle left Shields to reflect on their misfortune. But few teams
will take anything off Cramlington this year. Shields came as close
as most despite the scoreline.
28/10/07 - NAYCP U15 Cup Match
Tynemouth 1 North Shields 9
Shields went into this match as hot favorites. But Tynemouth hadn't
read the script. After 30 miniutes the sides were level at 1-1. It took
a header from Shields' centre back, Tom Farrar, from a corner to give
the first division side a first half lead. Colin Bell quickly slotted
in his second and Lewis Summers made it 4-1 by half time.
The second half was cruise control. Summers and C. Bell ended up with
a hat trick apiece. Gibson and J. Bell also scored in the second half
to give the score line a more realistic look. Adam Gibson maintained
his recent run of impressive form as play maker. Glen Critchlow also
showed well throughouy and Calvin Anderon showed his ability with an
excellent second half display. But Man of the match was that man Colin
Bell once again.
NABC League 1 Sunday 21st October
North Shilelds 2 Wallsend BC 6
These two great rivals met last month and fought out a 0-0 draw. But
this encounter was much more open and the football all the more exciting
for it. Shields claimed first blood when the excellent Adam Gibson slammed
in a penalty after the Wallsend keeper had brought down the Shields
centre forward in full flight.
For half an hour following the goal it was all Shields. But then Tom
Farrar was harshly judged to have fouled Jordan Allcock 25 yards out
and and the former academy star showed his quality when getting up and
planting the resultant free kick superbly in the top right hand corner.
A second Wallsend goal came quickly after and Shields were on the ropes.
They hadn't recovered their composure before finding themselves 4-1
down shortly after the interval following some disturbing lapses of
concentration. Man of the match, Glen Critchlow pulled a goal back from
a corner and some Shields players played at full tilt right through
to the final whistle. Jordan Bell and Arron Murffin epitomising their
desire to compete. In truth though, Wallsend had a little too much in
too many areas on this occasion and deserved all three points.
30/09/07 - U15s League 1 NABC
Walker Central 2 North Shields 2
This was a feisty affair with both sides keen to put one over on the
other. A bright start by Shields saw them create good chances. But a
combination of slack finishing and the crossbar kept Walker in the game.
And they made Shields pay on the half hour when Jon John got down the
left flank dragging defenders out of position. The ball was delivered
perfectly for Jason Purvis to head home unopposed.
Justice was done when Colin Bell converted one of a hatful of chances
right on half time. But Walker made it 2-1 when Jon John scored after
going clean through. What a special talent this lad is. But it was all
Shields after that. A penalty was missed before man of the match, Tom
Culverhouse equalised with a cracking strike.
Jordan Bell was having a great game creating attacking opportunities
for Shields down the left hand side. But it could have gone either way
at the end particulalry when Shields' centre back Tom Farrar pulled
down Jason Purvis when he was put clean through on the goalie - the
referee deciding against a caution.
23/09/07 - NABC U15s League 1
Wallsend BC 0 North Shields 0
Games between these tow great rivals are always tight and this one was
no different. With Wallsend going into this game in better form than
their neighbours, Shields knew they had to defend well. Their Captain
Marvell, Declan Haswell, gave another inspirational performance to win
his third man of the match award of this still young season. He was
well supported by centre back partner Tom Farrar and full backs Arron
Murffin and Jake Pirie were also excellent.
But Wallsend will feel they should have won this one. With control of
midfield for most of the match they looked most likely to score in the
first twenty minutes but failed to engineed a clear cut chance. They
did put the ball in the net in the second half but were unlucky to have
the goal ruled out for offside.
Niall Piper was back in goal for Shields and never put a foot wrong
all game. Briggs and Laws showed their worth for Shields when they came
on and Will Marsh revelled in his new midfield role. Shields pressed
in the final fifteen minutes and could have sneaked a win on the back
of few chances if Calvin Anderson hadn't been unlucky with his shot
and Tom Culverhouse had been able to force the rebound home.
16/09/07 - NABC U15s DIVISION 1
North Shields 0 Whitley Bay 2
These two great rivals fought out another hard game with Whitley Bay
just about deserving to come out on top. That it took them an hour to
score was due to some excellent defending from Shields. Man of the match,
Declan Haswell was again superb. As was his centre half partner, Tom
Farrar.
A very harshly awarded free kick was sent to the near post and three
Whitley attackers queued up to finish. A rare lapse - but costly. Prior
to that it was fairly even, the best chance having fallen to Tom Culverhouse
who saw his shot saved when one on one with the keeper.
With Shields throwing everything forward, Whitley found a gap to create
the clincher from their excellent left winger.
12/09/07 - NABC U15s Division 1 League Match
Grainger Park 1 North Shields 3
Shields had to go on the road to get their frist win of the season.
Brave Grainger Park were no match for the excellent team work that characterised
Shields' play and they could have been several goals to the good before
Colin Bell converted a penalty after twenty minutes. Adam Gibson hit
the bar from a free kick and Tom Culverhouse hammered one against a
post.
The second half saw a less fluent Shields get a second after half an
hour when Colin Bell hammered a slide rule pass from Calvin Anderson
past the advancing keeper. But a well taken goal from Grainger Park
made the last ten minutes very nervy until the excellent Jordan Bell
poked one in from a corner right at the end. The plucky full back deserved
his man of the match award.
Eamonn Farrar
Shields' Assistant Manager
09/09/07 - NABC Under 15s Pinpoint Cup
Whitley Bay 3 North Shields 0
Shields started the brighter of these two coastal teams. Colin Bell
did brilliantly to run through Bay's defence in the second minute only
to scuff his shot wide when it looked harder to miss. Tom Farrar headed
just over from a corner ten minutes later and that set the pattern for
the half. It was a surprise then that Bay scored with the last kick
of the first half. The ball was headed clear from a corner and a Whitley
forward smashed it in from fully 25 yards out. Great finish.
As if that wasn't bad enough Shields went two down in the second minute
of the first half. Bay's centre forward looked to be off-side but with
the linesman flagging the referee waved play on. And ten minutes later
it was 3-0 and game over for Shields. Whitley dominated the remainder
of the game and, in the end, deserved their win.
Tom Culverhouse got man of the match for Shields and Glen Critchlow
had a belter. Skipper Declan Haswell was once again commanding at the
back but Shields have now lost their first three matches and will be
looking for an improvement in the score line in the next game.
05/09/07 - NABC U15 League Division 1
North Shields 5 - 7 Blyth
Blyth won a crucial toss and elected to play with a low sun and strong
wind behind them. Add to that the slope advantage and they went into
half time 5-0 in front. Very few goals were down to good Blyth play
and it remains a mystery why, at the moment, Shields simply don't start
firing on any cylinders until the second half of games.
With a second half mountain to climb and the sun having disappeared
over the horizon Shileds could have cursed their luck and hung their
heads low. Instead they showed real spirit and pulled two back in the
first ten minutes. Tom Culverhouse and Glen Critchlow scoring. Then
Lewis Summers scored and it was game on. Sadly Blyth bagged a couple
more but Shields kept going and goals from Jack Alnwick and Colin Bell
brought some respectability to the score.
Credit to Glen Critchlow for getting man of the match and to Jake Pirie
who cam on and had a cracking second half. But oh........ what might
have been.
02/09/07 - NABC U15 League Division 1
Newburn 3 North Shields 2
Shields new season kicked off with a real thriller away to Newburn.
And in fact it was the home side who started the better of the two teams
as Shields were slow to get going. Two goals were conceded in the opening
20 minute spell before a brilliant free kick from Adam Gibson from fully
30 yards out landed in the top corner of Newburn's net. And this just
minutes after Tom Culverhouse saw a shot role onto the inside of the
home team's post. Shields new signings were finding their feet now.
Johnnie Laws played well as did Calvin Anderson at the heart of the
midfield.
However, the second half was just two minutes old when Newburn made
it 3-1. A well worked goal and an excellent finish. But Shields weren't
finished. Colin Bell made it 3-2 with another stunning free kick and
Jordan Bell hit the bar before the final whistle gave respite to Newburn.
Declan Haswell was man of the match but Glen Critchlow must have ran
him close.
Eamonn Farrar (Assistant Manager of North Shields)
