NABC Under 12 League: Division 6
Sunday 11th April 2010
Wideopen Juniors 1 North Shields Juniors Porto 3
The North Shield lads had prepared themselves well for this game with an extra raining session the day before the match. Adam Hooper was away in High Borrans so the big debate leading up to the game was about who was going in goal. Jake Adamson had the gloves and volunteered to take the first half between the sticks – well done Jakey. The game started well – it was a big pitch that suited Portos crisp passing and moving style and the lads put Wideopen under pressure from the start. Coaches Brown and Thompson had made some astute tactical changes (these guys could be the next Clough and Taylor) with Nathan Robinson slotting into right back to give some supporting pace to Connor Strachan whose skill would be a god send on the right wing. Louis Burnett had two good chances while the Robinson / Strachan combination down the right hand side was paying dividends creating plenty of opportunity. Stephen Elliott was causing all sorts of problems down the left wing and the reunited central midfield pairing of Andrew Thompson and Lewis Cox meant Porto could boss the middle of the park.
Anthony Chisolm was partnering Louis up front and all season his skill had either got him into great positions or had set his team mates up. This time though Anthony’s skill created the space for himself and he looked up and planted the ball into the corner for 1-0 Porto - a fantastic goal. Chisolm continued in the same vein probing and testing the Wideopen defence time after time. Wideopen though never gave in and they started to create some chances themselves. One of them leading to the equaliser with a well struck shot. Ivan Glen and Callum Brown were once again solid in centre of defence with Eden Kidd playing well at full back and putting in some excellent passes. Jake on goal looked comfortable and his distribution was superb.
Into the second half with Dean Stephenson moving to right back to keep things tight. This allowed Nathan to push into right wing, Connor back into midfield and Jake up front. The brave Lewis Cox taking over the reigns in goal. Again this was a great tactical move from the coaches of the year (in their own minds anyway!) as Porto completely dominated the second half. It seemed like a goal would never come with Adamson shooting from every angle but the Wideopen keeper stopping everything. Then Porto got a free kick on the edge of the box – at first we thought it was a penalty but the referee thought it through carefully and made a good decision. Up stepped Callum Brown who superbly curled the ball home into the top corner for 2-1 and another fantastic goal. From then on Wideopen didn’t get a sniff as the Shield boys took full control. Jake Adamson was rewarded for his efforts with a great strike and finish to make it 3-1 and warp the game up
Overall - a good performance against a spirited Wideopen team and a thoroughly deserved win.
Man of the Match – Anthony Chisolm
Well done Porto!!
NABC League 6
Sunday 13th September
Ashington 2 North Shields Juniors Porto 2
There was another pitch adventure before this game. The team met at
Tynemouth Pool and travelled in a convoy to The Hirst Welfare in Ashington.
On arrival at the campus site the pitch looked good, the nets were up
and the weather seemed like it would like it would hold up and then
we’d be off home to catch the end of the first half and all of
the second half of the Toon’s game against Cardiff on the telly.
Only one snag – while we could see the pitch and the nets and
the opposition warming up we hadn’t reckoned on a 8 foot fence
between the car park and playing fields! Back in the cars and a quick
drive around the corner and we eventually kicked off 10 minutes late
– now we’d catch the second half.
The black and whites were an unknown quantity, but Shields got at them
from the start. With Adam brought back into defence after a wondrous
training session revealed his natural position and Anthony Chisolm pushed
up front the Shields lads looked a different team. Granted we weren’t
playing Man Utd, but the Porto boys began to play like a team that believed
in themselves and dominated the first half for long periods. Stephen
Elliott ravaged the Ashington right full back and Nathan had two players
marking him on the right to stop his marauding runs down the wing. Lewis
Cox and Andrew Thompson were cleaning everything up in midfield –
putting a huge amount of effort in – so much so that Andrew injured
himself in the name of the team winning another high ball from the Ashington
keeper. However, such is life and on Ashington;s first attack they were
awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Up stepped their centre midfielder
who smashed the ball home into the top corner for 1-0 – an injustice
after the way the game had started – but now a test for the lads
to see how they would react. And react they did with heads up and chests
out they continued to push forward – Callum Brown playing some
great balls into the Ashington danger area and Jake Adamson causing
all sorts of problems for their defenders. The lads had five corners
in a row but the Ashington defence held firm – and then it came.
A great outswinging corner from the left and Adam rose majestically
to thump home a header that John Terry would have been proud of –
a great goal at any standard of football and a deserved one for Porto.
On they pushed and Stephen Elliott was tackled in the box, but to everyone’s
surprise a penalty was awarded to Porto. Once the home complaints were
out the way and a long debate about who would take the penalty, Stephen
himself stepped up to take it. He beat the keeper, the ball hit the
post and then the back of the keepers head – surely it was a goal,
but some how the ball stayed out. Probably justice in the end, but…….
Anyway Porto kept plugging away and a few long balls over the top saw
the home keeper race from his line to clear on several occasions. With
10 minutes to half time he did it again, but the ball fell to Lewis
Cox – some 35 yards out – and Lewis casually lofted the
ball home to put Porto ahead 2-1.
Half time came and went with some encouraging words from Graham. Ashington
to their credit turned the game around and they began to dominate for
most of the second period. However, the Porto defence was magnificent.
With Ivan Glen sweeping everything up at the back and Liam and Dean
Stephenson making solid tackle after solid tackle Porto contained the
Ashington attack well. Matty Ridley was growing in confidence and was
on his toes for any balls in to the box. He made at least two good saves
to do his bit for the team. Porto didn’t create as much in the
second half but chances fell to Jake, Ben and Stephen as the lads broke
out of defence well. It looked as if the Porto boys were going to hang
on for their first victory, but the only (yes only) time they lost their
concentration they were punished. A long ball over the top saw the Ashington
striker latch on to the ball and he hit a superb shot across the face
of the goal giving Matty no chance. 2-2.
The last two minutes were frantic but the referee blew the whistle
to rapturous applause from both sets of parents who had witnessed a
great game – and officially Porto’s first point –
ever!
It shows how far the lads have come that they were disappointed not
to have won the game. They dominated the game for long periods, attacked
and passed the ball well and defended in an organised and determined
fashion. There will be tougher games this season and a few more lessons
learned, but as long as they want to continue to improve there’ll
be more opportunities down the line.
Opposition Man of the Match – Andrew
Thompson. Managers Man of the Match – Lewis Cox who was presented
at the end of the game with the only blade of grass he didn’t
cover in the match.
Who cares about the Toon on the telly now - Well done Porto!!!

North Shields Porto 0 Cullercoats FC 11
A bit of excitement to start the day with pitches and referees not
quite going to plan. But with a bit of quick thinking from the management
team the game was saved and moved to St Thomas More High School. A big
thanks to George at Cullercoats for helping things at short notice and
save the day, while Coach Brown took the referee’s whistle and
(mostly) kept up with play. The weather threatened to break but thankfully
only a bit of drizzle affected the game and parents were able to keep
warm and dry by forming close knit groups on the touch line. There was
lots of reflection on last Saturdays’s barbeque and Karaoke at
the Robin Hood pub in Murton and a healthy debate about who was the
best (Graham) and worst (too many to mention) singer. Everyone agreed
it was a good night and that we had managed to comfortably eat the extra
food that was provided without too much complaint. At the end of the
game the players and coaching team had some great discussions and agreed
that we would all work together to improve (and enjoy) as the season
progressed. A big thanks to Mams, Dads and other supporters –
in the words of Yazz & The Plastic Population – the only way
is up. C’mon Porto.

North Shields Porto 2 (Adamson 2) Tynemouth United 5
The new season started full of hope, expectation and excitement. Visitors
Tynemouth had been in a higher division last season and a tough first
game was anticipated. Things had looked good for Porto in training with
the players showing good skills and commitment and the game started
well with Tynemouth put under pressure from the off. Jake Adamson and
Adam Hooper had some good early opportunities, but a combination of
good goalkeeping and rustiness kept Tynemouth in the game. It didn’t
last long and Jake Adamson slotted home coolly from a Lewis Cox cross
for 1-0. Further chances fell as Tynemouth continued to defend well
and then the game changed within a minute. Two balls over the top of
the defence exposed the lack of pace in the team and two goals in a
minute saw the visitors turn the game around. Last season that would
have been that and Porto would have been heading towards a double figure
defeat. However, they kept their heads up responded positively and put
their opponents on the back foot again. They were rewarded when last
season’s top scorer Adamson smashed the ball home again from 20
yards giving the goalkeeper no chance. At half time the teams went in
level but Porto suffering from a minute of madness. To be fair to Tynemouth
they played much better in the second half and dominated for long periods
– Shields resorting to break aways to create chances. One in particular
when former Tynemouth player Lewis Cox swung a great cross in from the
left but could only watch as the ball eluded everyone. Tynemouth snatched
the lead following confusion in the North Shields box and then a hopeful
long shot caught keeper Matty Ridley by surprise. Matty though had kept
the score down with four very good saves. A goal in the last minute
put a lop-sided look to the scoreline. In summary – a great start,
two good goals, lots of chances, a minute of madness and three lucky
breakaway (ahem!) second half goals!! The season is going to be fascinating
– roll on next week……………..
Man of the Match Matty Ridley
