Cramlington Juniors Reds 4 North Shields Juniors AFC 1
The first big test for the juniors as they headed up the A19 to Crammy. Last season the juniors were plagued by Jekyll and Hyde performances – with the coaches working on developing the players consistency. The game started well with both teams testing each other and Cramlington having the best of the early pressure without much luck. The Juniors defended well and didn’t allow their hosts to create any clear cut chances. Slowly the Shields lads clawed their way into the game and began to play some good football. Luke Lloyd, Connor Cavens and Connor Physick linked up well down the left hand side and with Nathan Blacklock taking a grip in the centre Shields began to grow in confidence. Dillon Young is continuing to develop well and forged a good partnership with Luke – both of the players holding the ball up well and bringing their team mates into the game. It was the Juniors that took the lead – although slightly fortuitously – as another good move ended up with a deep cross (or shot?) from Connor Cavens hitting the back of the net. Cramlington responded well and put the Shields defence under pressure – although the marshalling from Lewis Cass and the defending from Conor McKenna, Connor Physick and Thomas Stoetzel held firm. Then it happened – one lapse of concentration and a clinical finish from the Cramlington striker and the game was level. There was more pressure from the home side leading to the interval, but a combination of luck and good defending kept the scores even at the break. The second half was a different story with the lads allowing the hosts too much time and space and by the time they had organised themselves we were 3-1 down and with a mountain (not a mole hill!) to climb. To the lads credit they battled but weren’t able to lift themselves back in the game and a late goal sealed a victory for the Cramlington boys.
In summary – Jekyll and Hyde were back. Some very positive things from the game, but one or two things to work on.

North Shields Juniors AFC 5 Bedlington Juniors Milan 2
A home game to start for the second season running as the Juniors kicked off in new strips sponsored by NASEEB. With a big squad this year its going to be a challenge for the management team to keep everyone happy – and a challenge for the players to keep their place in the team. A disrupted pre-season with holidays and injuries meant there weren’t too many times the whole squad had been able get together and even today Matthew Cartwright wasn’t able to link up with his team mates. Training though has been very positive with Coach Cass putting the players fitness to the test – and the players responding fantastically well.
On to the game and the Juniors put in a very positive performance. The Juniors feared there was a mole in the camp as the Bedlington managers tactics indicated he knew the Juniors team selection before the game with his team able to snuff out the home teams attacking abilities from the start. However, that didn’t last long and the Juniors began to dominate. New goalkeeping signing Ben Sidney-Wilmot looked composed between the sticks and the other new signings gelling nicely into the side (by the way a big welcome to Thomas Stoetzel, Marcus Varty, Kyle Everitt, Callum Wandless and deadline day signing Connor Cavens).
Kyle Everitt bagged the first goal of the season with some good passing flowing from a throw in down the right (yes – we got it right from a throw!!) – Nathan Blacklock picked the ball up on the edge of the box for Kyle to hammer home from 20 yards. It was Nathan himself who put the Juniors 2-0 ahead slotting home a corner to double the home sides advantage. It wouldn’t be a Juniors game without letting the opposition back in and when Bedlington sneaked one back tensions soon rose. However, the Juniors responded well to hit back. Luke Lloyd looks to have found his scoring touch – following his hat-trick against the under 13’s he grabbed two more today and could have ended up with 4 or 5 to his name. Alex McEwen also got in on the act - getting himself in the right place to slot home after the Bedlington goalkeeper was caught out by a wicked bounce. Some believe the credit must go to the North Shields Juniors mole who redeemed himself by digging his hill in exactly the right place to deflect the ball to Alex!
There was still time for Bedlington to score another and give the Juniors a lesson that they need to concentrate for the whole game.
