North Shields Wanderers 1 - 1   Heaton Hawks Kestrels
VENUE: John Spence DATE: 29 November 2009

North Shields battled well to earn a draw despite the weather.
Shields took to the field against Heaton in strong winds and cold, lashing rain on a day when the majority of fixtures were cancelled. But the Wanderers had fire in their bellies as they were still smarting from a 6-1 away defeat to the same opposition.
The game started with good end-to-end football in defiance of the conditions. It looked like the Kestrels had made the first breakthrough on 10 minutes when their forward latched onto a long ball and raced through to score. However the linesman's flag had already gone up. At the other end Lewis Betts made a good run into the box, turned his marker and played the ball across the face of the goal. Ryan Kelley got to the ball, but placed his shot just wide.
On 22 minutes the Shields defence were punished for failing to close down the ball. A Heaton cross from the right was turned goalwards, and Chris Curry did well to clear off the line, but when the ball fell to a Heaton player he was given too much time to place his shot into the net.
By half time the weather had worsened and substitutions were more cold-related than tactical, as players shivered in the sleet and hail. But it was Shields who coped best with the adverse weather. Chris Curry discovered the art of the sliding tackle, and initially used it to good (if muddy) effect, although he later had to be warned about over-use of this technique.
Callum Storey was having success down the left wing, and when a long clearance from Chris Curry sent him away again he showed great composure. He initially feigned to take the ball towards goal, but checked back out to lose his two defenders. He then placed a looping shot over the Heaton keeper and into the net. He rarely scores a tap-in!
Time was played out in increasingly difficult conditions, and the manager was pleased to see a much better attitude (and result!) to the last time the teams met.
THIS WAS A RETURN TO FORM AFTER THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE LAST MATCH - I WAS REALLY PROUD OF THE WAY YOU COPED WITH SOME AWFUL WEATHER!

Heaton Hawks Kestrels 6 - 1 North Shields Wanderers
VENUE: Manor Park DATE: 15 November 2009

Wanderers' unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt end by Heaton Hawks.
Unfortunately our roving reporter suffered the double misfortune of leaving his notepad in the boot of the car and being made referee.  On the plus side, as a result there is no comprehensive record of this drubbing.
From recollection, whilst being decidedly off-colour, Wanderers were only 2-0 down at the break and there was optimism that the game could be turned around.
Things looked good early in the second half when Shields were awarded a freekick just outside the area for handball.  Whilst Ciaran's good initial effort was blocked, in the resultant scramble the ball was turned in.  There have been varying accounts of how the ball went over the line and which colour shirt got the last touch, but the referee gave it to James Mole.
Unfortunately that was one of the few positives to come from the second half.  The Hawks were able to re-impose themselves on the game and scored a flurry of goals late on to secure a comfortable result.
LETS HOPE THAT THIS WAS JUST A ONE-OFF BAD DAY AND WE BOUNCE BACK IN THE NEXT GAME LADS!

18/10/09 - Cramlington Town 1 - 6 North Shields Juniors

Wanderers notched their first away win of the season on another beautiful Sunday morning.
The first five minutes of the game started quite evenly as both teams took time to settle on the ball.  The first sign of a threat came from North Shields on 7 minutes.  Ryan Kelley swung a dangerous corner in under the crossbar and the home keeper did well to save.  The Cramlington goal was not safe for long however.  On 8 minutes Ashton Meekin managed to get to the by-line and when his cross wasn't properly cleared Callum Bell was on hand to shoot through a crowd of players.
Wanderers doubled their lead on 11 minutes.  Ashton Meekin intercepted an attempted clearance on the half-way line.  He then went on a jinking run through the defence before rounding the keeper and slotting home from close range.
North Shields only had their two goal cushion for three minutes.  The defence failed to clear from our own throw-in in the right-back position, and when the ball broke to a Cramlington striker he did well to cut inside and fire a shot under Stephen Scotland in goal.  Wanderers heads could easily have dropped after they had surrendered a lead in their last away match, but this time they looked confident that they could make amends.  Sure enough, Ashton Meekin went on another mazy run down the right hand side and when he squared the ball Jospeh Mastaglio was on hand to score his first goal of the season on 19 minutes.
The score stayed 1-3 through to half time thanks to some good saves by the Cramlington keeper who smothered the ball at the feet of North Shields attackers on a number of occasions.
North Shields resumed their onslaught on the Cramlington goal early in the second half.  With only 31 minutes on the clock the captain, James Mole, did well to control the ball and fire in a shot from the right hand side of the box that beat the keeper.
On 37 minutes Callum Bell got the goal of the game, striking a ball cleanly from the edge of the area with his right foot that sailed high into the net.
Jack Hutchinson was now operating well down the left hand side and was tormenting the Cramlington right-back.  On 38 minutes he finished off a good run down the left with solid cross from the by-line that found Callum Pattison poaching in the middle for a tap-in.
A GREAT PERFORMANCE LADS, WITH A MUCH BETTER ATTITUDE THAN LAST WEEK AND SOME NEW SCORERS.

11/10/09 - Cramlington Jaguars 2 - 2 North Shields Wanderers

The Wanderers let a lead slip, but picked up their first away point of the season.
The game started with end to end football.  Stephen Scotland had to get down sharply to save a free kick and smother the rebound.  At the other end Callum Pattison had a good run into the box but pulled his shot just wide.
Whilst North Shields were having the better of possession and were creating good chances, they always looked susceptible at set pieces.  On 25 minutes the defence failed to clear a free kick and it was turned in over the head of Ashton Meekin as he tried to clear off the line.
Wanderers went straight back up the other end looking for an equaliser.  Callum Bell whipped in a free kick from the left that evaded everybody and required a save from the keeper.  But on 28 minutes North Shields got the goal that their play deserved.  Jack Hutchinson played a ball in over the top of the Jaguars defence and Ryan Kelley raced onto the ball and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper and into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
North Shields now clearly had the momentum and had many attempts on goal.  Ashton Meekin beat several players in the box but slipped as he was aiming to shoot.  Callum Bell got his head up and picked out Callum Pattison on the edge of the area, but he shot just wide. Finally, in first half injury time, Ryan Kelley whipped in a corner from the left that beat everybody and went straight into the net.
The second half also started brightly for Shields.  A free kick swung in by Ryan evaded the heads of three men at the far post when it looked certain one of them would score.  Sam Beattie then turned and found Joseph Mastaglio on the edge of the box.  He in turn played in James Mole, whose firmly struck shot was well saved by the Jaguars keeper.
As the half wore on it became clear that the Jaguars were hungry to get back into the game and a series of fierce challenges saw several Shields payers receive treatment.  As the atmosphere turned uglier some of the Shields payers seemed to lose their concentration, allowing the Jaguars to assert themselves on the game.
On 39 minutes Stephen Scotland did well to save a well-struck shot and then pounce on the rebound, but there was nothing he could do 9 minutes later.  From a Jaguars corner it looked as if the danger had initially been cleared when Chris Curry got his head to the ball first, but no red shirts got out to the ball as it bounced on the edge of the area.  The ball was drilled back through the crowded box for the equaliser. It could have got even worse for Shields if Ashton Meekin had not cleared off the line and Stephen Scotland dived on the loose ball.
WE NEED TO KEEP OUR HEADS LADS!

04/10/09 - North Shields Wanderers 5 - 2 Cramlington Town

"North Shields Wanderers took to the field with a warning from the manager that he wanted them to win this game.
"
However, despite good possession in the early stages Shields fell behind to two sucker punches. On 7 minutes a break away down the left saw a Cramlington player fire in a shot from 10 yards out. Stephen Scotland blocked the shot, but the Cramlington number 10 was first to the rebound and tucked away the goal. Two minutes later Shields slipped further behind, a move down the right saw the Cramlington number 10 get to the edge of the box where he looked to swing in a cross, but a well struck ball sailed over everybody and into the net.
Shields needed to regain their composure and confidence, and ideally that meant getting an early goal back. Sure enough on 11 minutes Lewis Betts made a strong run from midfield all the way to the byline. He squared the ball and Callum Pattison was on hand to drive the ball home.
Wanderers pushed on looking for the equaliser and were now enjoying good spells of possession, but never seemed able to get a telling shot on target. Callum Bell was making some strong runs down the left hand side, and when, after a long mazy dribble, he was eventually upended by a Cramlington defender, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The manager sent up Ryan Kelley to take the spot kick and he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner to make it 2-2 after 21 minutes.
With just 2 minutes to go before the break, Shields completed their comeback by going 3-2 up. A goalmouth scramble saw several players poke the ball goalwards, with good efforts from both James Mole and Ryan Kelley, but the linesman eventually indicated that the ball had crossed the line off an unfortunate defender.
Wanderers were told to push for more goals in the second half, and duly obliged by going 4-2 ahead within a minute of the restart. An attempted clearance from the edge of the box by a Cramlington defender went straight up in the air and bounced dangerously in the box. Lewis Betts was first to the ball and headed it confidently into the net.
Shields were now well on top and went close to extending their lead several times. James Mole put a shot just wide after Jack Hutchinson chased down a ball that most people had given up on and put in a telling cross. Jack then went close with an effort of his own that was cleared off the line by a defender.
On 58 minutes the pressure finally told again with Cieran McClelland getting up from centreback to fire home the goal of the game - a well struck shot from the edge of the area that sailed over the keeper, making the final score 5-2.
HA'WAY THE SHIELDS!

27/09/09 - North Shields Wanderers 2 - 2 New Fordley

Despite a rearranged formation and a new centreback pairing Shields started brightly, and within 7 minutes they had the lead. The ball broke to Callum Bell on the left hand side of the box and he drilled in a low cross. Ryan Kelley was on hand at the far post to tap in.
The lead didn't last long. On 12 minutes a long ball beat the Shields' offside trap, leaving Stephen Scotland with little chance from a one-on-one. Jordan Blackburn confidently placed the ball to bring the visitors level.
Eight minutes later the visitors were in front. North Shields didn't properly clear their lines at a goal kick and Nathan Calvert raced through to prod past the keeper.
New Fordley were gaining in confidence and Shields were starting to lose shape. Scotland did well to save an attempted chip, Chris Curry cleared off the line, and a goal for the visitors was ruled offside.
On 25 minutes, centreback Chris Curry went down injured and had to be substituted. Sam Beattie came on up front, Callum Pattison dropped back into centre midfield and Lewis Betts moved into defence to give pace at the back.
The Shields back four regrouped quickly. The captain, Dylan Gardner put in some crucial tackles, Cieran McClelland was having success in the air and Joe Donkin cleared to good effect. As a result, the score remained 1-2 at half time.
New Fordley continued to apply pressure after the break and Ryan Kelly did well to clear an effort off the line. But the Shields midfield was working hard and it started to pay dividends with some good chances, notably a goal-bound effort from Callum Pattison clawed around the post by the giant New Fordley keeper.
With 10 minutes left Ryan Kelley whipped in a good corner and Callum Pattison stooped to head into the New Fordley net.
North Shields then proceeded to give their manager a nervous wait for the final whistle. Despite good defending New Fordley were carving our opportunities. Lewis Betts had to chase down a man who had got clean through and Stephen Scotland made a good save with his feet, but the team held on to take their first point of the season.
WELL DONE LADS!

20/09/09 - North Shields Wanderers 0 - 4 Newbiggin Hall

"Unfortunately defensive frailties were to prove costly for North Shields as they lost their opening home game of the season.
"
After a good start that saw end to end football, Shields went behind to a set-piece on 7 minutes. A corner was met by a good near-post header that left Cieran McClelland with no chance in the home goal.
Shields did then manage to steady the ship, and put together some good breaks of their own. James Mole was making good progress down the right hand side and the pairing of Lewis Betts and Ashton Meekin up front carried a threat, but there were no really telling shots on goal.
After 20 minutes Shields were undone again. The defence initially cleared a corner but when it was crossed back in several flailing feet failed to make contact with the ball. The ball broke to a Newbiggin striker who blasted the ball back through a crowd and into the net.
It was then a case of 'deja vu' just before the break when a cluster of North Shields players were unable to get any distance on attempted clearances and the ball was scrambled over the line, making it 3-0 at half time.
The second half saw a marked improvement, with the players ears ringing about the need to clear their lines effectively. The only goal went to Newbiggin early in the half, and Shields were more than a little unlucky that a good clearance deflected to a striker on the edge of the box as the Shields players pushed out. The striker kept calm to slot past the keeper for 4-0.
Nevertheless North Shields pushed on, and looked the more likely side to score the next goal, with James Moles' breaks down the right continuing to be effective. But whenever tested the Newbiggin keeper proved very effective, and try as they might the Wanderers couldn't register the goal that they desparately wanted.
BACK TO SET-PIECE PRACTICES GENTS.

13/09/09 - Ellington 6 - 3 North Shields Wanderers

North Shields started the game brightly and looked a well-balanced side. James Mole and Jack Hutchinson both made good progress down their respective wings to pose a threat to the opposition. Lewis Betts and Ashton Meekin were working well in tandem up front, and Shields were able to go into the break 2-1 infront thanks to goals from James Mole and Lewis Betts.
Ellington came out determined to make amends in the second half and were increasingly able to impose themsleves on the game. Despite good goal keeping and particularly notable tackles from the full-backs Ryan Kelley and Dylan Gardner, Ellington were able to add another 5 goals to their tally.
North Shields did have a glimmer of hope, with a well taken second goal for James Mole, but in truth they were a shadow of the team they had been in the first half.
Wanderers first league game of the season ended in a 6-3 loss, but there was plenty of cause for optimism for the season ahead.
GOOD EFFORT - BUT TIME TO WORK ON FITNESS AND POSITIONING LADS!

06/09/09 - Wallsend BC 20 - 0 North Shields Wanderers

"Wanderers were unlucky to draw a first division team in the first round of the cup. Whitley Bay had won their league at U10s and were a very classy outfit, able to pass the ball with ease and shoot from distance.
As a result the game was a mismatch with little Shields could learn from long spells defending and little possession.
The one comfort to take from the game was the good form of both keepers (Cieran McClelland in the first half and Stephen Scotland in the second), who both made some outstanding saves - despite the bad backs they had developed from picking the ball out of the net.
HARD LINES LADS - LETS HOPE WE GET A BETTER DRAW IN THE LEAGUE CUP!"
