Reports
20th March 2010
North Shields Tigers 2 (Swinney, Craig) Wallsend Boys Club Madrid 1
There are times when you watch a match with indifference, with some interest, with a mild sense of expectation or with a feeling that this could be something special. The feeling in the air was the latter - could the Tigers build on their fabulous result against Newcastle City against the mighty Wallsend Boys Club Madrid??!! Of course they could!
We were met with the usual wonderful weather with the usual wonderful John Spence facilities there to keep us shelter! As I was the only one there it seemed without a brolly, I stood between two - bad idea as the water from both dripped down onto me!
As the lads now have only the one substitute available (after the bad break AGAIN for Kieran - better luck next season!!!), Lee had to work his changes carefully - the lads were going to get tired on this claggy pitch. Steve blew the whistle and we were off, with Wallsend looking dangerous straight away. The no.7 (or 'Arms' to his mates) was using his elbows in a remarkable number of ways, mainly as a weapon, but the boys kept at their task without complaining. This looked as if it was going to be, as Phil said, 'The Alamo', but a piece of Moo Moo Magic changed the whole complexion of the match. Picking the ball off the Wallsend strikers toes, he took it past a couple of bemused midfielders and threaded a ball through to Tom C that couldn't have been more pinpointed if he'd used a compass, protractor and spirit level. Tom took the ball in his stride, outpaced the defenders and expertly slotted it under the keeper. As they say, confidence breeds confidence, and the goal gave the lads the belief that they could win the game. After winning a throw in on the left, Tom volleyed the return straight onto the head of Connor who guided it into the net. 2-0 to the Tigers!!! Get in!
After this, Wallsend brought on their 6'6 number 9, who must have been finishing off his shave in the first quarter. To be fair, he was a very good player, but he couldn't get passed the doggedness of the Tigers, in particular Moo Moo and Tom who constantly nipped at his heels. A couple of shots did get through, however, but Alan was at his world-class best on a number of occasions, particularly one where he saw the ball late and palmed it round the post - spectacular!
Wallsend got a goal in the second quarter (which they rightly deserved) but the Tigers held their own for the rest of the match, with Kai constantly battling, James a wall at the back and Josh always willing to put his boot in where it hurts, and came out as deserved 2-1 winners, a score that puts them in the top half of the Premier League (didn't think we'd be saying that at the start of the season!!!)
Some MIGHTY results and performances recently lads - keep on keeping on!!!

North Shields Tigers 1 (Nicholls) Wallsend Boys Club Barca 2 (after extra time)
After the Jags beat Wallsend Madrid in the first of the Sky Sports Special Double Header Afternoon, could the Tigers make it a Shields double over their more illustrious rivals?
With the match played over halves rather than quarters, the lads stamina needed to show in this match, and did it! As we have seen over the past few months, these lads are gelling together as a team, with everyone putting in 100% effort across the park. Against one of the top teams in the league (and the reigning Premier League champions), the Tigers almost pulled off another historical result.
The Tigers had a fantastic start to the match - great wing-trickery from Connor led to the ball on a plate with all the trimmings for Josh and the net bulged. 1-0 to the Tigers and how we cheered!!! The Boys Club were good, very good, and only another tremendous defensive display from the partners in grime, Moo Moo and James, prevented an equaliser. It was always going to come though, and, with only minutes to go, the ball fell nicely to the Boys Club no. 7 who half volleyed it past Alan into the net.
As the game went into extra time, the yorkshire puds consumed before the match started to have a weighty effect, and some tired legs were now on show. A run down the left, a cross, header and it was 2-1 to Wallsend. Heroic keeping from Alan kept the score down. When the whistle came, the Tigers heads were down after being beaten.
BUT a great performance (yet again) and we are showing that we ARE one of the best teams in the NMSL.
A special mention to Steve Grey - not only a great refereeing performance, but also did his best to help the Tigers by falling over and taking out the Wallsend striker for the rest of the match - Steve, we salute you!
Man of the Match - not sure!!!! Think it was Tom Swinney!!??

North Shields Tigers 3 (Craig, Physick, Swinney) Cramlington Juniros Reds 1
Sunday afternoon. The time to lie down after your beef and yorkshire puds, watch Bonanza, have a kip then get ready for some sarnies made from the left over dinner. OR to stand in the cold and mud watching everyone else going home.
I know where I wanted to be on a Sunday afternoon, but after this performance by the boys, make it a regular afternoon kick off each week Lee!! A tremendous scrapping display against Cramlington's 2nd team. As Simon Brown said afterwards, "Cramlington against North Shields would have been a walkover a few seasons ago, but we're catching them up!" Well done to all North Shields Under 10 teams who ALL won today. They'll be dancing in the streets of Whitley Bay, I tell you!
The constant harassment of the Reds meant Crammy could never settle, and the midfielders of Josh, Kai, Swinster & Connor were stuck like little gluey terriers to the heels of the Reds midfielders for the whole match. Tom C was creating loads of space, meaning the Crammy manager had to drop two back at all time while Kieran, Moo Moo and James were SOLID and the Reds strike force were forced to try speculative shots.
The Tigers created more in the match, and were unlucky through the game with headers from Tom C and shots from Kai, Tom S and Josh being blocked or saved. Despite the mud, the Tigers were trying to play passing football at times and it was joyous to see some one-touch stuff at times.
The goals were all well taken efforts. Good harassing from Josh set up Tom C to turn and slide the ball in for 1-0. Connor's corners were too darn hot for the Crammy defenders and one fizzer hit the defender and pinged passed the keeper for 2-0. Unlucky son but we'll take it!
Crammy came back into it when a shot went through Alan's hands (very unlucky with the wet, muddy ball) and at 2-1, the Tigerettes were worried! BUT NO NEED TO! At times like these, who ya gonna call? No, not Ghostbusters....The Swinster!! A stupendous left foot volley from the box made it 3-1 and even the Crammy parents were cheering that one! It was up there with Alan's hammerlob as one of the best goals I've seen on a football pitch (come on, I do support Boro so I don't see many!)
A great 3-1 win which gives us all the confidence to go on and win more matches in the PREMIER LEAGUE!!!!

18 October 2009 – North Shields Tigers 13 - 0 Ellington Eagles
“The bright crisp morning brought the Tigers another opportunity to consolidate their league position, although they would have to do it without the services of Thomas Craig who was sunning himself in warmer climates (Warkworth). The young, keen referee checked the teams were ready and that no beach balls were present in either of the goal mouths and off we went.
Swinney quickly shuffled past a few Ellington players before crossing, but the pass was just too firm for Physick and the Ellington right back gathered up the ball and was off down the wing like a greyhound until he was brought to a sudden halt by a tackle from James who quickly moved the ball to the boy Physick who has developed “Messi feet” of late. Physick ghosted past 2 defenders and lifted the ball over the advancing keeper for 1 – 0.
Ellington, clearly rocked by the early goal persisted on going through their Number 6 for most of their moves. Now this lad has been sleeping in a grow bag since Easter and showed some decent early touches and was having a great head to head with Physick who was causing all sorts of problems for the Ellington defence.
Physick again moved past a few defenders and shot against the post with Swinney missing the follow up. On the right hand side Nichols had clearly been eating blue smarties all morning as he was in blistering form up and down the line and ably supported by Kai who is clearly modelling himself on Lee Cattermole with some fantastic tackling and defensive work.
In the middle, Swinney was having more shots than a Quayside vodka bar but managed to pinpoint a through pass to MooMoo who slid the ball across for Physick to make it 2 – 0.
Ellington were being hunted down in packs and it took a great save by their goalkeeper from James’ corner to keep the score at 2 – 0 at the end of Q1.
Quarter 2 started with MooMoo raiding down the right wing and whipping in a great cross which no one managed to get on the end of whilst Nichols again produced a great last ditch tackle to stop Ellington being through 1 on 1 with the unemployed Alan.
Physick again with his “look into my eyes, look into my eyes” hypnotic powers on the left wing fooled 2 defenders, passed to Kai who unselfishly laid it back to Swinney for 3 – 0.
Straight from the kick off, Physick slides a pass across the goal and it somehow squeeeeezes into the corner of the net for 4 – 0.
Enter Kieran, who stops a rare Ellington attack with a crunching tackle and a further header to Swinney who opens his little legs and whizzes past 4 defenders, slides it to Physick who finishes coolly for 5 – 0.
The shots are reigning in and the posts needs a lick of paint after Kai, MooMoo, Swinney & Physick all manage to hit the woodwork from glorious positions.
Kieran gets out of his armchair to clear an Ellington attack but quickly settles back down with his pipe and smoking jacket. Nichols beats a couple of players, shoots and scores for 6 – 0. A great goal and well deserved.
Another quick attack from the restart sees Swinney down the wing, cross and Physick scores again for 7 – 0. This boy’s boots are hot !
Quarter 3 starts and Alan dreams of being involved whilst he catches up on the surrounding games.
At this point I have to say, that the attitude of the Ellington players was fantastic – they never gave up to a man and the Tigers should note this in the coming weeks and months when they will face sterner tests.
Nichols has clearly been on the smarties as he continues to work the line and one of his corners is headed goal ward by Swinney but just clips the far post.
James & Kieran are now assisting Alan in forming cobwebs on his gloves but wait, a shot comes in and Alan makes a good save to keep his goal intact.
Nichols again down the wing, into the box, down he goes………..PENALTY !!!!! Eh, no, free kick outside the box by a blade of grass. Undeterred Nichols picks himself up and curls it towards the top corner, great save but Kai reacts quickest and helps himself to number 8.
Another attack and the Ellington keeper makes a great save. The ball comes out and MooMoo crunches into a tackle and Kai scores from the rebound for 9 – 0 at the end of Q3.
Kieran hands are cold so he gets Alan’s gloves for the final quarter whilst Alan wanders off up front in a gladiatorial swagger. Alan wins a corner which Nichols takes and Alan decides to take off like Clark Kent. His head meets the ball around knee height and bullets its way into the net for 10 – 0.
Quickly from the kickoff, Physick beats a defender and simply chips it over the out coming keeper like Suker against Schmechiel (some of our more senior supporters will recall this one) – truly a great finish for 11 – 0.
Alan moves the goal posts with a further shot from the wing and Kai picks up the rebound, plays it off the post (we know you meant it Kai) before sliding it in the corner for 12 – 0.
Another Nichols free kick off a post and Swinney taps in for 13 – 0 and a further Physick dribble and shot for 14 – 0.
As the final whistle blows, the tannoy system blasts out a rendition of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”.
Goals: Physick 7, Hall 3, Swinney 2, Nichols 1 & Alan 1
M.O.M: Tom Swinney
Special Mention: Everyone – first class performance !”

North Shields Tigers 6 (Craig 3, Swinney, Hall, Grey) Blyth Town Greens 0
The boys were confident of continuing their unbeaten start to the season against a Blyth team who had "apparently" gained some new, stronger players. With Matthew Morley sick, Lee was left with just the one sub to choose from.
The first quarter began fantastically for the Tigers, a cross from Connor being knocked in by Sniffer Craig. 1-0. More velcro-like dribbling from the Swinster created another chance for Tom C, but he knocked it wide. The unofficial coaches on the side were telling Tom to get goal-side of his defender, and when he did, he scored. A throw in cleared the midfielder, Tom took it past the leaden footed defender and passed it through the keeper. 2-0. More attacking, more near misses, and tremendous wing play from Josh set up Tom S for 3-0 at the whistle. Alan hadn't touched it!
Blyth came into it more in the next quarter, and were passing it sweetly across the grass. But these Tigers are determined to make the opposition pay for their mistakes, and Kai blocked a weak clearance which fell to Tom C who Rocketed it in. 4-0 and Tom's hat trick. We thought that was a rocket, but the next one from Tom knocked the keeper out! Tom S and Connor were dribbling like dribbly things through the Blyth defence but the ball just wouldn't go in. The Waddle-like genius of the boy struck later, though, and his deft touch set up Kai to make it 5-0 at half time. Not sure if Alan touched it!!
"Get yer foot on it TOM" came the shout from Swinster Senior, and never has such an evil stare been given on the pitch since Roy Keane was in his pomp! More shots rained in on the Blyth goal, but Connor, Josh and Tom S were all unlucky. Alan then had a save to make, and with his clearance almost cleared the opposition goal! Kieran and James were just mopping up at the back and probably had their easiest game for a while.
Lee is going for the "Most Outfield Players in Goal Award" this season, as it was Tom C's turn for a go of the green jersey. Alan was determined (ever so slightly!) to make an impact on the game, and immediately hammered it in! 6-0. The next shot from Alan was so hard, the post is still rattling! More "post-hitting" followed with a great run and shot from Connor, and he was unlucky not to score on another 4 occasions this quarter! Tom C then tried to do some heady ups in the box, not realising he was the keeper and could use his gloves!
Another good performance boys and.....

No notes taken again, sorry. My hands were too full with a 2 year old
and fruit flakes! The lads played really well today, lots of good, aggressive
tackling, decent passing play and strong running. The first goal was
a speculative shot by Josh that some how made it's way into the net.
The second was great play from Tom C to set up Kai, who placed it beautifully
past the keeper. The third was tremendous individual play from Connor.
Kieran was again "Hansen-like" in defence, while James played
some great balls through. Josh and Matthew were tenacious in the midfield,
while Tom S again kept it all together. Kai is showing real potential
with his constant battling, and Connor jinked his way to another game.
Alan made the saves when he was needed, while Tom C caused havoc all
match with his power and speed (though the ball just wouldn't go in
for him.)

Seaton Delaval Moscow 1 North Shields Tigers 4 (Craig 2, Physick, Grey)
First of all, well done to the Mams who made over £100 at the
tuck shop!!!
Chance after chance after chance.....that was the story of this match.
It started really well, with Tom Craig picking the ball off the defender
and punting it past the keeper. 1-0. Good inter play led to a great
chance for Connor but it was well saved by the Moscow keeper. Alan looked
bored! More chances, most falling to Tom C, and he was unlucky with
one that hit both posts. Great jiggery pokery from Tom S led to a good
shot from Connor which whizzed past the post. James wanted a bit of
the action, and a great rasping shot was again well saved.
The second quarter began well with the 2nd goal, a cross coming off
Tom C's shoulder (I repeat, SHOULDER....not head!). Tough tackling from
Kieran stopped any thought of a Moscow attack. Another Connor header
(it's getting to be a habit - that must be £15 you owe him now
Gordon!) made it 3-0, while Kai's great cross deserved to be met by
a head. 3 up at half time.
Then...a shock! Moscow played some great one-touch football, a shot
and it wa 3-1, with the Moscow Mam's going crazy!!! The Swinster wasn't
happy with that, and seemed to have velcro attached to his boots as
he danced through the midfield, setting up great chances for Kai, josh
Nandy and himself. More attacking with near misses from a Tom C header
(phew...!) and Tom S.
There then came a bit of a shock. Who was that up front but the man
in black himself, Alan Grey. Kai settled himself in net and everyone
seemed to have found themselves a new position! Alan immediately made
himself known with some barging runs, one well saved. The Seaton Delaval
players defended like Trojans (don't know why the Trojans had such a
good defence?) and more chances were missed. More attacking, a cracker
of a shot from James was beaten out only to fall to Alan who planted
it in the net. 4-1.

Morpeth Millenium 3 North Shields Tigers 3 (Swinney, Physick, Hall)
After Lee got to Morpeth later than a Paul Scholes tackle, the Tigers
took on the unknown quantity of Morpeth Millenium. A great start for
the Tigers with a cracking volley from outside the box by the Swinster.
1-0 to the Tigers. And then jinky Connor Physick jinked a jinking run
through the Morpeth defebce for number 2. EASY thought the Tigers fans.
Great defending from Kieran kept all at bay and 2-0 after the first
quarter.
Continued tough tackling from the Tigers defence and midfield, while
Connor was causing mayhem with his Chrissy Waddle dribbles, but it remained
2-0 at half time.
Tom Craig could have made it 3, but his great run and shot hit the post.
Then, disaster. Two quick breakaways from Morpeth and two quick goals.
2-2 and the crowd couldn't believe it! Then controversy - a great cross
from Josh was headed towards the goal by Tom C. It hit the bar, hit
the post, rolled along the line and 'seemed' to cross. The Tigers turned
to celebrate, but the ref waved play on. Tom was distraught, mainly
down to the £5 he could have won! Great play continued from the
Tigers - a run by Josh Nandy just going wide, a run and shot by Tom
C well saved by the keepers backside. Then a great cross was well headed
in by Kai - a well deserved lead - 3-2.
Alan started the final quarter with a magnificent tip round the post,
and Kieran was again playing some tremendous balls through the middle.
The Tigers were now on the back foot, however, and after defending well,
were hit with one of the last touches of the game! GUTTED! 3-3

North Shields Tigers 11 (Swinney 4, Craig 4, Physick 2, Hall) North
Shields Leopards 2
So the season starts here, and what a better way to begin than with
a local derby cup match! The Tigers have been stalwarts of cup competitions
over the years, so the confidence was high. However, without the solid
Alan in goal, there were a few nerves beforehand. The new two halves
of 25 minutes would also test the stamina of our young braves!
Nerves were calmed immediately, however, with some smart, passing football
from the Tigers. The ball bobbled in the box, hit a leopard on the arm
(or paw??!!) and the ref (eventually) pointed to the spot. Up stepped
The Swinster and placed it to the keepers right. 1-0 and less than a
few minutes gone. It was all out attack from the Tigers, with Nandinho
in goal not getting a touch, not even a kick. Seconds later and it was
2-0, with Tom Craig, the new Shearer/Slaven/Rowell (take your pick)
sniffing the ball in the net. More attacking, a long Delap-like throw
in and Tom S passing it in. Minutes later, Connor got in on the act
with a well taken goal, and then turned provider for another for Tom
S' hat-trick. 5-0 and not even half time. The Leopards heads were going
down, and they were almost by their boots when some Nandinho trickery
(now out of goal - Connor had taken his place) almost led to a goal
for Josh, but he unluckily put it past the post. Anything the Leopards
were getting past the midfield was easily thwarted by the defensive
rock-iness of Kieran, James and Moo Moo. The midfield of Kai, Tom S
and Josh were bossing it, and a piece of magic down the right from Josh
left Tommy C with inches to knock it in. 6-0. The half finished with
more skills from Nandinho almost leading to Kai's first goal for the
Tigers, but it was well saved.
The second half began with more changes from Lee, and Moo Moo was now
in goal. The lads were playing pinball in the Leopards box, and eventually
it fell to Kai who drilled it in for 7-0. The lads had had a couple
of chances to score headers during the game (you know who you are!)
especially from Tom S and Josh corners, and eventually one went in when
Connor dinked it in for 8-0. More tactical changes with goalkeeper no.4,
James, taking his place. There then followed two goals in a minute,
both from Tom C, completing his hat-trick. It was now double figures
and 10-0. The score was increased to 11-0 moments later when a Tom S
corner evaded everyone and curled in the net (not "luckily"
Tom!) The Leopards then showed their bite with two well taken and well
deserved goals. Lee had made so many changes the ref had to play 15
minutes of injury time! The ref eventually blew the whistle on a very
entertaining and well-played match.
