Reports

North Shields Santos 3 Guidepost Juniors 1
(3rd Feb 2008)
After last weeks great performance but bad result spectators were nervous
to see how the lads would perform today. Ben was back from illness and
although not yet able to play everyone was pleased to see Jack well
enough to come and cheer the lads on (looks like we might have a full
squad again next week).
In an attempt to get goals and stop conceding on the break a few changes
were made to the line up this week. To add a bit of pace at the back
Andrew was dropped back into a sweepers role. Ehrin was moved into defensive
midfield to add a bit of bite in the middle and to hold the ball up
front Dan was moved to centre forward.
From the start it worked a treat Guidepost kicked off but were immediately
pinned back as Santos took control of the game. Ehrin was winning everything
in the middle and with Robert and Mark now coming to look for the ball
instead of being isolated on the wings Santos were controlling the midfield.
Dan was leading the line well holding the ball up and laying off some
fine balls. Dan was unlucky with two efforts from inside the box and
Mark saw a great long range shot just fly past the post. Then at last
the beak through a good corner from Mark, the Keeper pushed it out and
in came Ehrin to slam the ball into the back of the net 1:0
Second quarter Guidepost had the wind and to their credit came more
into the game having a couple of early shots. Santos took a bit of a
breather but the new system was working well Ehrin dropped along side
Ivan at the back and Andrew swept up anything that got through still
1:0
Third quarter and Santos again had the wind at their backs and pushed
Guidepost back. Mathew was now on for Dan up front and using his strength
well. It was turning into a keenly fought physical game and at last
Santos were showing their strength and winning all the 50-50 balls.
A freekick to Santos in the Guidepost half. Ivan picked out Mark in
the box who took a great touch and slotted the ball past the keeper
2:0. Santos were at last believing in themselves, passing the ball and
playing as a team. Summed up by Ehrin who lost the ball on the edge
of the Guide post box but picked himself up to run the full length of
the pitch to put in a crunching tackle.
Fourth quarter Guidepost had nothing to lose and the game swung from
end to end both teams playing well but with Santos still looking the
stronger. With a couple of minutes left Cutris at last had a couple
of real saves to make pushing a couple of cross shots past the post.
With time running out Guidepost forced a number of corners and from
one the ball broke to a Guidepost player whose looping effort ended
in the top of the net 2:1
Santos didn't panic and deservedly from the resulting kick off regained
a two goal lead. The ball was passed across the back and picked up by
Ben who tore down the wing, skinned the defender, cut into the box and
hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net 3:1
A deserved win for Santos after two good performances lets hope we've
turned the corner. Well done lads

Ashington AFC 4 North Shields Santos 0
(27th Jan 2008)
Two games into the new saeson, two 4:0 defeats and two poor performances.
Santos had a lot to prove today.
On the face of it another 4:0 defeat but that doesn't tell the real
story as the game was played in bizare conditions on out door astro
turf in extremely high winds, so much of the time was spent retrieving
the ball from the neighbouring pitch.
From the start it was obvious a different Santos team had turned up
today. Despite having Ben and Jack missing and playing into the wind
in the first quarter, from the start they pinned Ashington back, with
early efforts from Andrew and Robert well saved by the keeper. Santos
were camped in the ashington half and seemed to enjoy the fast surface
passing the ball around well. Then a bizare couple of minutes. A long
ball from Ashington with the wind behind the forward ran onto it and
with thier first attack they scored 1:0. Santos again pushed forward
looking well in control then a minute later "deja view" Ashingtons
second attack long ball goal 2:0 unbelievable.
Second quarter Santos had the wind behind and did everything but score
with Curtis a complete spectator in the Santos goal. Mark was relishing
the fast surface and causing havoc down the right. He had an early shot
well saved by the keeper. Another run by Mark squared to Andrew whose
first time shot flew just over. A minute later same moved Mark down
the right pulled back to Andrew , this time his long shot was tipped
round the post by the Keeper who was having a great game. Another attack
Dan was brought down and Ivans unstopable free kick just flew over the
bar. still 2:0
The third quarter and Ashington with the wind behind at last began to
show something, pushing Santos back, however without really causing
too many problems. Ehrin and Ivan were coping fairly comfortably despite
being pretty well isolated as the rest of the Santos team pushed forward.
With the wind behind Ashington forced a number of corners and from one
of these scored an excellent 3rd as the defender arrived from no where
to power a great header into the roof of the net 3:0
With the wind again behind them for the 4th quarter Santos threw everything
at Ashington Dan, Mark, Robert and Mathew were leading the line forcing
a string of great saves from the keeper and a succession of goal line
clearances. Not only was the keeper playing out of his skin but on one
comical occasion playing well outside his box. Dan picked up the ball
on half way and bore down on goal the keeper to his credit came out
quickly and made a fantastic save diving full length to punch clear
Dans attempted lob. The only problem was he was at least 10 yards outside
his box "great save" said the referee "play on"
A bizare moment which really summed up a bizare game. To top it all
with Santos throwing everyone including keeper Curtis forward Ashington
broke away and scored a 4th. 4:0
A bizare game which had Santos won it 4:0 would probably have better
reflected the ballance of play. The coaches could not have asked for
more from their palyers except perhaps a few goals and that was the
difference. Ashington had perhaps 6 or 7 shots and scored 4 goals Santos
had too many shots and attacks to mention but failed to score. However
I'm sure if you keep palying like this the goals and results will come.

Cramlington Jaguars 4 - 0 North Shields Santos
(13th Jan 2008)
A brief report since there's no point dwelling on what was a poor result
for Santos
Must be something about early kick off's in Cramlington they don't like.
The first quarter was fairly even with Santos comfortably holding there
own and with neither side really creating many chances. As the quarter
came to an end Cramlington began to find their passing game and with
the last move of the quarter won a corner. A good ball into the box
and an excellent finish 1:0. Still all to play for.
The second quarter was a nightmare and turned the game as Santos played
as a team and collectively went missing for the whole quarter. Cramlington
gained in confidence and created a number of chances scoring 2 and seeing
Curtis make a string of excellent saves to keep the half time score
down to 3:0
Not sure what was said at half time but Santos came out for the 3rd
quarter took hold of the game and began to play football. The defence
pushed up, the midfield suddenly began to win the ball creating a number
of good chances. On another day Santos could have easily got back into
the game but there continuing problem of failing to convert chances
into goals again cost them dearly.
The fourth quarter was almost identical to the first. Fairly even with
neither side creating much. However as the game petered out Cramlington
scored on the break to make it 4:0
4 - 0 was a harsh scoreline but the game summed up Santos as a team
, frustratingly inconsistent, one minute they look like world beaters
and the next look like they have never met each other. Lets see if you
can play the whole game next week like you played the third quarter
today
On the plus points Curtis was excellent in goal, the defence apart from
the second quarter looked solid
and Robert had an excellent game on the left on his debut having only
met most of the lads on Friday

Morpeth Town 2 North Shields Santos 3
(4th November 2007)
A change of scenery after 4 home games Santos travelled to Morpeth for
an early kick off and yet again the weather was perfect. After last
weeks good result it would be interesting to see how the lads faired
against a team just above them in the league.
From the start it was obvious that both teams were fairly evenly matched.
Santos began the brighter pushing Morpeth back into their own half and
creating a number of chances. An early goalbound effort from Ben was
unlucky to strike a Santos player in the box and rebound clear. Moments
later he again broke free down the left only to see his shot beat the
keeper but rebound to safety off the post. Morpeth were soaking up Santos
pressure and relying on their considerable pace to hit Santos on the
break. With a few minutes left they outpaced the Santos defence and
with Curtis beaten the ball headed for the bottom of the net, however
Ehrin had other ideas and somehow produced a fantastic goal line clearance
to keep the score 0-0 (as good as a goal Ehrin).
The second quarter was much of the same with few chances from either
side and with both sides totally committed there was little room for
the passing football Santos have played of late. Dan and Mark in midfield
weren’t giving Morpeth any time on the ball and were also showing
how much they have listened in training as they were both chasing back
and covering for the defence. Half time and still 0-0
Third quarter and Santos upped their game a couple of chances went
begging before Jack picked up the ball on the wing cut inside and let
fly with an unstoppable shot that the keeper could only palm into the
corner of the net 1-0. A couple of minutes later Jack again picked up
the out wide and played it through to Mathew just inside the box. Mathew
easily shrugged off the defender and slotted the ball home under the
out rushing keeper 2-0. Although Santos were 2-0 up Morpeth continued
to cause problems but Santos showed the strength they have in defence
with Ivan leading the line and Andrew now covering for Ehrin comfortable
sweeping up at the back.
The last quarter started with Santos looking comfortable and taking
the game to Morpeth. However Morpeth had other ideas. A quick break
in numbers found a Morpeth player unmarked just outside the box and
he hit a dipping shot heading for the top of the net , Curtis looked
beaten but somehow managed a superb one handed save to tip it over the
bar. Santos should have learned from that but continued to throw men
forward and from the next corner Morpeth again broke in numbers this
time Ehrin was completely outnumbered as Santos failed to get back (need
to learn from this lads) and Morpeth scored 2-1. Morpeth now had the
bit between their teeth and for the first time in the match Santos were
pinned back, and within a couple of minutes of getting their first the
game was suddenly level a scramble from a corner and the ball was prodded
into the net 2-2.At this point it looked like Morpeth could go on to
win it but Santos had other ideas and began to play again forcing Morpeth
back and gaining a number of corners. From one of these the ball broke
free and it fell to Ivan just outside the corner of the box with plenty
Santos player still forward he launched it towards the goal, Morpeth
panicked, tried to clear only to see the ball glance off a Morpeth head
into the back of the net. An unfortunate goal for Morpeth but no more
than Santos’s determination deserved. 3-2
Overall a great performance from Santos and a good test against a good
side who were above them in the league. Not the passing game they have
been practising but a superb battling team performance with all the
lads playing their part. Well done lads you never seem to give up.

North Shields Santos 11 Newsham Juniors 0
28th October 2007
The weather was yet again fine and bright with little wind, ideal for
football.
Up against a Newsham team who have struggled this season the pressure
was on Santos to show they have put last weeks lack lustre performance
behind them and they didn't disappoint.
From the start it was one way traffic with Santos pretty much camped
in the Newsham half. However it was beginning to look like Santos's
inability to get the ball in the net would come back to haunt them as
chance after chance was saved by the Newsham Keeper or just missed the
target. This ended in a strange series of events with Santos forcing
5 corners in a row the resulting efforts on goal all being pushed past
the post by the Newsham keeper. Up stepped Jack for the 6th corner and
curled a superb cross directly into the net to end the quarter 1-0
Not sure what was said at the team talk but the one way traffic continued
and with Santos now playing some great passing football within 5 minutes
of the restart were 5-0 up and finished the quarter leading 6-0.
The rest of the game continued in much the same way with the final score
ending 11-0. Apologies for not
detailing every goal but everyone struggled to keep up with events as
Santos playing some fine attacking football and created chance after
chance. On the balance of play and chances missed or saved by the Newsham
keeper the final score could easily have been doubled.
The players put in a great team performance and all deserve a mention.
Curtis was virtually unemployed in goal coming out for the last 10 mins
but couldn't quite get his first goal. Ehrin and Ivan at the back had
a comfortable day and it was good to see them passing the ball out of
defence with Ehrin driving forward into midfield and Ivan scoring probably
the goal of the game with a blockbuster freekick from some 20 yards(unstoppable).
Andrew in central midfield tried everything to score but had to be content
in setting up a fair amount of the goals with some excellent cultured
passing.
On the wings Jack and Mark really tormented the Newsham defence, with
Mark producing some great driving runs into the box and being rewarded
with a hatrick. Jack earning MOM put some great balls into the box and
amazingly curled in 2 goals direct from corners.
Up front Ben and Mathew caused problems in different ways. Mathew used
his strength to great effect and was rewarded with 2 good goals. Ben
with his blistering pace was almost unplayable and he notched a deserved
hatrick, but with a bit of luck could easily have doubled that.
All in all a comfortable win against a Newsham team lacking in confidence.
However it was pleasing to see Santos play as a team from start to finish
and pass the ball around. Well done Lads.

North Shields Santos 0 Blyth Town Greens 3
21st October 2007 Weather fine and bright ideal for football
After 3 improving performances and looking good in training today turned
into a bit of a non-event for
Santos. I think we'll have to put it down to a collective bad day at
the office and coming up against a Blyth team who by their own admission
put in one of their best performances of the season.
The first 5 minutes started brightly with Santos taking the game to
Blyth, passing the ball and putting them under pressure, however with
one of their first attacks Blyth scored a fine goal passing the ball
through the heart of the Santos defence. Santos never really recovered
and from that point really struggled to put any real moves together.
No one real problem just a collective bad day, the defence who have
been outstanding this season were uncharacteristically jittery, the
midfield, who dominated the game last week sat back and allowed Blyth
to control the game , and the attack who in recent weeks have created
chances for fun barely got a shot on goal.
On the plus side Curtis who has had little to in the last 2 weeks was
outstanding in goal his handling was faultless on a greasy surface and
he made a succession of great saves. Bizarrely Santos could have got
something out of the game because the goals apart from the first one
were scrappy affairs, the second being a penalty and the third a speculative
long distance shot that somehow found its way into the corner of the
net.
Blyth however played well and deserved the win although to their credit
the Santos lads never gave up and although nothing was coming off, stuck
to their guns and tried to play.Lets learn form this and get back on
track next week.

North Shields Santos 2 Whitley Bay Fc Locamotiv
2
14th October 2007.
A fantastic day for football and the crowd weren't disappointed with
both sides producing a really entertaining game. It got off to a bad
start for Santos however as before the kick off last weeks man of the
match Ehrin had to drop out of the warm up and was physically ill at
the side of the pitch (after the rugby match the night before, a few
of us new how he felt). It takes more than a bout of sickness to stop
Ehrin though and he lined up in his usual sweeper position for the kick
off.
1st Quarter
From the start it was obvious we were in for an entertaining morning,
no long balls here , both teams were intent on passing the ball. Santos
made the early running with Ben having a couple of early efforts saved
by the keeper. Mark and Jack were tormenting the Whitley Bay defence
and forced a succession of corners. Whitley bay came back into the game
towards the end of the first quarter with some good football of there
own. This set the scene for the rest of the match with each team taking
it in turn to try and take control of the game.
2nd Quarter
Whitley Bay took the lead in the second quarter after a good spell of
possession ( 0-1) however Santos never looked like a beaten team and
were looking the more dangerous. Mark made some great runs and Mathew
held the ball up well allowing the midfield to join the attack. Santos
ended the quarter pushing Whitley Bay back but a number of good chances
went begging.
3rd Quarter
Santos stepped up a gear this quarter and took the game to Whitley Bay
but suffered an early setback as Mark was (literally) carried off injured
(Pleased to report - no lasting damage). However the partnership of
Andrew and Dan in midfield seemed to work well with Andrew breaking
up the play and passing the ball form deep while Dan used his strength
to carry the ball forward and set up Ben and Jack. The pressure eventually
brought an equaliser Ben battled well in the box to win the ball, his
shot was almost blocked but managed to find the back of the net. ( 1-1
). No more than Santos deserved but a minute later Whitley Bay were
back in front and Santos for the second week running fell to a sucker
punch just after scoring.(1-2)
4th Quarter
It was turning into a really good game with Whitley Bay playing some
good football but not really creating
much as Ehrin and Ivan put in another assured performance at the back
and Curtis's Handling in goal was faultless. Dan and Andrew were controlling
the midfield with Ben and Jack were leading the line, battling for everything
and creating some great chances. The deserved equaliser eventually came
as Ben again latched on to a free ball in the box and beat the keeper
( 2-2 ).
Credit to both teams for a really entertaining game.
Santos again stuck to what they have practised and produced some great
passing football with no shortage of individual skill and fierce tackling.
Again they created a bucket full of chances from start to finish and
with a bit more composure could have had a hatful of goals, but if they
keep creating the chances the goals will eventually come. The main plus
point from today though was team spirit, great to see the lads are working
for each other and playing with a smile on their face.
M.O.M - Ben Keenan
North Shields Santos 2 Wansbeck City 1
7th October 2007.
This was more like the footballing weather we know and love, wet and
miserable. After last weeks promising performance the lads seemed up
for the game and it soon became obvious that the hard work they had
put in on Friday in training had sunk in.
1st Quarter.
From the start Santos took the game to Wansbeck and at last the lads
were playing the passing football they have worked so hard on in training. With
ball barely out of the Wansbeck half for the first 5 mins, and a succession
of shots on goal from Mark, Ben, Jack and Andrew the breakthrough had
to come and what a goal to open the scoring for the season. After great
work on the wing from Jack he squared the ball to Andrew who shaped
to shoot but slid the ball to Ben in the box. Ben took the ball with
his back to goal spun and fired a great shot into the bottom corner
1-0. Santos didn't sit back Jack was tormenting the full back on the
right wing. Mark and Andrew had control of the midfield and Ben was
having shot after shot saved by the Wansbeck keeper who was having a
great game. The quarter ended with the keeper pulling off a spectacular
save to deny Andrew who's long distance shot was heading for the top
corner.
2nd Quarter
Wansbeck began to come into the game in the second quarter but the Santos
defence looked extremely solid with Ivan as strong as ever and Ehrin
having a great game playing slightly deeper and sweeping up any loose
balls. and although Wansbeck were trying hard to get back into the game
Curtis in goal barley had a save to make. At the other end Santos were
still creating chances and Mathew was using his strength to unsettle
the defenders and was holding the ball up well. Dan had a number of
powerful runs and shots but again the Wansbeck keeper was in great form.
3rd Quarter.
Santos stepped up the pace again and laid siege to the Wansbeck goal.
Jack Mark and Andrew were all unlucky again with shots but everything
seemed to be hitting the Keeper.Ben eventually managed to beat him again
only to see his great shot rebound back off the post. After all the
pressure the second goal came from nowhere. Mark battled well to win
the ball in midfield and tried his luck from distance, the goalkeeper
wrong footed for once couldn't stop the ball as it beat everyone and
ended in the corner of the net. Unlucky on the Goalkeeper but no more
than Santos deserved. 2-0 However within a minute Wansbeck had a goal
back a speculative shot somehow beat everyone and Curtis who until then
had barley anything to do found himself picking the ball out of the
net. 2-1
4th Quarter.
Not sure what happened in the 4th quarter but after dominating the game
for the first three quarters
without being able to finish off Wansbeck. Santos suddenly stopped playing
and Wansbeck sensed they could get an equaliser. Fortunately the defence
was up to the challenge.Ivan headed away a succession of corners and
Ehrin was in great form relishing his role as sweeper giving Curtis
for once a fairly quiet day in goal. The game ended with Santos picking
up the pace again. Ben collected the ball in his own area and out paced
everyone as he ran the full length of the pitch cut into the box and
saw his shot flash just wide of the post.
A great performance not really reflected in the score. At last you're
passing the ball in a match and not just training. Just need to convert
some of those chances into goals.
M.O.M - Ehrin Walsh
North Shields Galaxy 5 North Shields Santos 0
30th September 2007. Weather was fine and bright ideal for football.
1st Quarter
Both teams started brightly with Galaxy playing some good passing football.
However Santos were up for the game and would not let them settle Ben
picked the ball up deep in his own half and produced a great run down
the right but just overran the ball for a goal kick.
Galaxy again pressed hard forcing a corner. The resulting kick was cleared
well by Ivan, but picked up in midfield by a galaxy player whose pass
into the box was turned in 1-0. An early setback but from the restart
Santos took the game to Galaxy with Ben and Mark working tirelessly
down the flanks Santos forced a freekick. Galaxy struggled to deal with
the resulting cross which fell to Andrew in the box only to see his
shot cleared for a corner.Galaxy continued to press however Ehrin and
Ivan in the Santos defence and Curtis in goal were comfortably soaking
up the pressure.Mathew replacing Jack up front was very unlucky as he
bravely charged down a clearance from a Galaxy defender only to see
the ball roll back to the goalkeeper.
2nd Quarter
The quarter started much the same as the first with Galaxy
pressing and Santos comfortably defending. However Santos began to gain
in confidence and pushed Galaxy back. A great run by Mark forced a corner
on the right. The resulting cross was cleared only to be picked up by
Ben whose terrific shot beat the goalkeeper only to be cleared off the
line by a fantastic diving clearance from the Galaxy defender. That
proved to be a turning point as against the run of play Galaxy broke
and scored their second 2-0. It was now end to end with Galaxy forcing
a succession of great headed clearances from Ivan and a tremendous block
at the back from Ehrin. At the other end a great bit of skill and pinpoint
pass by Mark set Andrew free down the left whose run into the box was
stopped by a great sliding tackle from the Galaxy defender.
3rd Quarter
Galaxy again started the quarter the brighter and soon had Santos under
pressure. Another great clearance from Ivan fell to a Galaxy player
in midfield whose great individual run and unstoppable shot made it
3-0. To Santos's credit they did not give up. Jack went on a great mazy
run through the midfield only to be eventually out numbered and Ben
broke free only to see his shot go wide of the post. Santos despite
being under pressure were doing well however the game turned again when
the referee gave a very debateable penalty after another strong defensive
challenge by the Santos defence. The penalty was converted 4-0
4th Quarter
Sustained Galaxy pressure at the start of this quarter. Santos were
now tiring and a few heads were down after the dubious penalty however
they were still defending well. A fantastic headed clearance off the
line by Ivan and another great block by Ehrin and it looked like they
would keep Galaxy out however a great long rang shot made it 5-0. With
5 minutes to go Curtis came out of goal and sparked a bit of life back
into the team. A long range effort from Jack went just wide and a shot
from Ben forced a good save from the Galaxy keeper.
A 5-0 defeat but a much improved performance from Santos against a very
good Galaxy team. The defence was outstanding throughout and the whole
team held its shape well and worked extremely hard for each other. A
lot of work to do on our passing game but one or two great moves showed
what your capable of. Well done lads
