Reports
18/10/09 - North Shields Pumas 10 Walker Blues 3
Pumas give Walker the Blues
After our upsetting defeat against Whitley Bay last week we were looking for the boys to bounce back.
To this end we asked them to focus purely on the positives of their game and we banished any negative talk. This will help in their development as players and individuals.
This philosophy will be transferred onto the pitch on match days and the results of which are slowly working. In order for our boys to grow with a positive attitude we need to keep this message alive, and everybody who has the Pumas at heart will need to focus on this more.
We started with a minor scare with Andrew our keeper reporting he had a sore throat. We asked if he was ok to play and he said he would give it a go.
1st Quarter
The game started with Walker on the front foot attacking our defence which dealt with the pressure well.
From one of these attacks we responded by getting the ball out wide to Leon who knocked it through to Spike. Spike continued with his run and managed to get his cross over to Leon who headed it into goal.
Our tails up, it was the Pumas who started to put the pressure on which resulted in winning a corner. Leon took the corner and it spilled to Joseph who shot, it was closed down and the ball fell to Spike. He didn’t need a second invite so he shot and scored.
Are pressure was paying off and the boys positive attitude was working wonders. Joseph desperate to score shot high over the bar. James who, as I have said previously, is growing in confidence with each game won the ball in the middle of the park and done a sweet one two with Leon and then fed it through again to Leon who ran on goal shot and scored. 3-0 and looking good it was surely a question of how many we were going to score. The quarter finished with shots from both Joseph and James but no further score.
2nd Quarter
I think the Pumas went into this quarter thinking they just needed to be on the pitch and as has happened with these boys before it could quite easily been their undoing.
Walker came out fighting and won a free kick on the edge of our box. They popped the ball into the danger area and shot. Andrew made his block but the shot rebounded and Walker managed to get the ball over the line.
Walker had a further two efforts which resulted in goals and the most I can say is that they were untidy affairs on our part and scrappy efforts on theirs. Our boys are quite clever in terms of knowing when they could have done better and to be reminded of it or have it pointed out to them in the heat of the moment does help so we give as much encouragement as possible asking them to pick themselves up and rebuild the confidence which they always need.
3rd Quarter
This started with a minor emergency. Andy had dipped and didn’t feel well enough to carry on. We had to act quick and called in the services of James. He was so excited at the prospect of going in goal he quickly took Andy’s gloves off him and started to put them on. We had to stop him there as he didn’t have the keepers top on and told him he would find it difficult to put it on with gloves on. Panic set in and he began to remove his own jersey but we told him to keep it on underneath to keep warm. This caused more stress as one arm was already out and the sleeve inside out. We did however manage to get him on the pitch and looking the part.
Conscious we didn’t have Andy our defence tightened and the attitude on the pitch changed. Walker kicked off and we were onto them immediately, Spike broke through the middle and scored. This lifted the boys further from defence right through to attack. Evan was his usual self, ever dependable in the heart of the defence making intelligent challenges, reading the game as it comes to him. When the step up to 11 aside comes I’m sure this boy will get even better. Ronan was excellent bringing the ball out of defence and using it wisely. We have been using Nathan more in midfield and it is quite the learning curve for him but he never shirks a challenge, never stops running and is happy to pass the ball if he sees a chance for his team mates to capitalise on. This attitude we need to preserve and encourage and his bravery will stay with him all his life. At the end of the game he was quite proud to show me the stud mark on his leg which he got from one of his challenges.
Back to the game and Walker had an attack which was broken down by the defence and this led to a Leon trade mark goal. Receiving the ball the Snowdon express departed with the ball beating his usual 3 score and twenty players shooting and scoring.
This was soon followed up by another Leon goal which was the result of Pumas pinning back Walker, restricting them to a series of throw-ins in their own half. The ball was won and passed to Leon to shoot and score.
From the resulting kick off Spike snapped at Walkers heels winning the ball he closed straight in on goal shot and scored.
All James could do in this quarter was look on at the magnificent display by he outfield players.
4th Quarter
7-3 up surely there wouldn’t be a repeat of the 2nd quarter. This was not the case and we proved to watching masses that the boys can also play a good passing game of football.
One of the moves of the game started with a goal kick from Nathan. He didn’t punt it up high wide or anything like that, he saw Ronan was free and played the pass to him. Walker’s attacker was straight at Ronan who passed it back to Nathan. This diverted the attackers focus onto Nathan who calmly saw that Ronan had made space to receive another pass off him. Ronan turned with the ball and ate up the space in front of him. He then passed the ball through to Spike who in turn fed Leon. Leon shot and scored and the Walker boys didn’t get a sniff, a delight to see.
Nathan was battling further along with Spike in the middle. These boys were winning the game for us and feeding a goal hungry Leon who was fed yet another pass from the middle for him to score.
It was now James’s turn to shine in goal. Walker created a rare attack and they shot from the edge of the box, James ‘the cat’ Wilson dive to his right tipping the ball over the bar. Jokingly cheers of well done Andy bellowed from the touchline as the corner was about to be taken. The ball was knocked in high and James met it with both fists punching it clear.
At 9-3 there was still time for another delightful move. It started from a Nathan goal kick that he passed once again to Ronan. Up the wing he ran dropped his shoulder and passed by the defending challenge with ease reaching the by line he crossed and meeting it with a volley Joseph shot and scored. He got his goal!
With final whistle blown the boys were once again smiling and well they might after burying the negatives which had haunted them from the previous game. We are in the league of death but one thing is for sure the undertaker wont get any joy from the Pumas these boys are magnificent. All that was left for Walker to do was to make a deal with the Devil, pick up their guitars and start singing the blues.

North Shields Pumas 0 Whitley Bay BC Blues 6
Jekyll and Hyde Pumas hit by late gaol flurry
The Pumas produced a Jekyll and Hyde performance against a very good Whitley Bay BC Blues side. They matched their opponents in every department for most of the game but conceded some sloppy goals including three goals in the last 5 minutes. There was little to choose between the sides except when it came to putting the ball in the net and that was the only area where the Blues had the edge. The Pumas matched the Blues for skill and gave their all for three quarters of the game before tiring at the end.
The 1st quarter was end to end with the Pumas probably having the edge. The 1st chance fell to the Pumas when Spike Houghton picked up the ball twenty yards out he raced towards goal beating two men and his powerful shot was blocked and cleared for a corner. Then from a long throw Nathan Pattison played a great ball to James Wilson whose good shot went just wide. The Blues took the lead against the run of play with only minutes left in the 1st quarter, across into the box caused confusion and the ball was deflected in for an own goal to make it 0-1. The Pumas kept their heads up and came straight back at the Blues, James Wilson played an excellent through ball to Spike Houghton twenty yards out, Spike turned his man and hit a superb shot inches wide with the keeper beaten. The 1st Quarter ended 0-1 and the Pumas could count themselves very unlucky to be behind.
The second quarter was again end to end with both teams giving their all and both competing for every ball with little between the sides. James Wilson squared the ball to Leon Snowdon, Leon beat two men and raced towards goal but just as he was about to shoot into the net the keeper bravely dived at his feet and smothered the ball. At the other end Andy Thompson produced an excellent save. The game continued to flow from end to end with Ronan Dunwoodie playing an excellent long ball to Spike Houghton who again shot just wide. Ronan Dunwoodie then shot wide from distance, then Nathan Pattison took a quick corner to James Wilson inside the box, James swivelled and turned towards goal and hit a brilliant shot which went just wide. At the other end Spike Houghton raced almost the full of the pitch to support his defenders and cleared a goal bound effort of the line. Another good move saw Ronan Dunwoodie take a quick throw to Leon Snowdon, Leon squared the ball to Spike Houghton who shot inches wide again. Just before the quarter ended Andy Thompson made the save of the game stretching full length to tip a powerful shot over the bar, then the Blues went close again when an excellent header went just wide. This was the Blues best period of the game so far and they scored their second just before the period ended. The second quarter ended 0-2.
The third quarter was again close with some competitive football played by both sides mainly in the middle of the park with very few chances being created as the teams matched each other for effort and skill. The Blues had a good chance that went jut wide, then as the Blues striker went one on one with Andy Thompson and with a clear run at goal, Evan Ward came from nowhere to produce an excellent sliding challenge to win the ball and clear to safety. The Blues were now on top and Ronan Dunwoodie blocked two goal bound efforts and Andy Thompson again dived full length to produce another great save. The quarter ended with the Pumas fighting back and Leon Snowdon picked up the ball on the half way line raced towards goal and hit a superb shot that was well saved by the Blues keeper. Again the Pumas eased off near the end of the quarter and conceded a third goal. The third quarter ended 0-3.
The fourth quarter started positively for the Pumas with Joseph Myers producing an excellent run down the wing he beat two men cut inside the box, he unselfishly crossed the ball and just as Leon Snowdon was about to pounce the Blues scrambled the ball clear for a corner under great pressure. At the other end Evan Ward was again called upon to make another super last ditch tackle to prevent a goal scoring chance. The Pumas were now starting to tire and their heads went down for the first time in the game this resulted in the Blues hitting the bar then scoring three goals in the last five minutes. Andy Thompson also made two more great saves during this period firstly diving bravely at the attacker’s feet and smothering the ball and then he turned another shot around the post. The game ended 0-6.
The three goals in the last five minutes flattered the Blues as for three quarters the Pumas had matched them in every department but had conceded three sloppy goals and had some good chances themselves. However in the fourth quarter the Blues upped their game and produced some excellent football which the tiring and deflated Pumas found hard to match. For three quarters of the game the Pumas had produced some excellent battling football and had given their all but tired in the last quarter. Andrew Thompson was again superb in goal making many great saves including possibly the save of the season so far when he tipped the ball over the bar while at full stretch. At the back. Nathan Pattison, Ronan Dunwoodie and Evan Ward were again excellent in defence making many great tackles but they often lacked support from their midfield colleagues which made it impossible at times for them to prevent some of the goals as they were heavily outnumbered by attacker’s. Spike Houghton was immense and gave his all both in attack and when chasing back to help his defenders. James Wilson, Joseph Myers and Leon Snowdon created many chances in the first three quarters and produced some excellent attacking football but they found it hard as they tired later in the game against a very strong Blues midfield. The Pumas can be proud of their performance for most of the game and the final score did not reflect the game. They will receive more reward against other teams if they can produce that football.

SNOWDON’S BLIZZARD OF GOALS
HAILS DOWN ON AMBLE
It was a bright late morning when we turned up at Amble, yesterdays
gales had now gone and we were left with a great day for football.
1st Quarter
Captain for the day was our defender Evan who is for those who don’t
know the Bobby Moore of the Pumas. Amble took the kick off and our boys
were straight on them. An early break on the left saw Joseph Myers shot
get closed down and it fall to Leon Snowdon whose shot was also closed
down and deflected for a corner.
This corner led to a goal mouth scramble with another shot from Joseph
going wide.
This quarter saw a more breaks down the right with Leon shooting wide.
Connor Mckenna also got in on the act with his creative play in the
middle. He wasn’t afraid to shoot from anywhere and was unlucky
to see a shot from outside the box fly into the hands of their keeper.
Amble too had some neat play in the midfield but most of their moves
were wiped out by the defensive paring of Evan and Ronan Dunwoodie.
Ronan in particular was getting his head on the ball, smothering attacks
and playing out of defence neatly passing it on to form more attacks
for our boys. Although the game settled it was surely just a question
of time before we broke the deadlock.
Leon looked angry and was battling for every ball. Last year he would
have physically pushed players off the ball this year he was using his
shoulders strongly pushing away all challengers. Sometimes he was punished
for this industrious play but I didn’t have an issue with anything
he done today.
The boys came off the pitch in this first quarter without a goal but
this didn’t matter to Rob or myself as we saw the boys putting
in the kind of performance which would surely win them the game.
2nd Quarter
Buoyed by our early showing the boys were in confident mood and we continued
this quarter just like the last. We struck a great move down the left
which started from a throw Leon then passed into Connor whose shot was
just wide.
Then against the run of play Amble managed to win a throw on the right
hand side which fell between our two defenders leaving their attacker
to shoot on the near post and in. This is where football has the knack
of kicking you where it hurts. This wasn’t supposed to happen;
we had all the play, the boys hadn’t put a foot wrong all day.
To my delight i heard a rallying cry from Connor, he wasn’t about
to lose this day. It was Connor who got the ball in the middle of the
play and fed Leon through. His new boots blurred in the sunlight as
he charged at the defence. They tried to stop him but somehow that ball
was going once place only and that was the back of the net. Like a wounded
animal we were fighting back. The Amble boys battled back to win a corner.
This was dutifully cleared by the boys at the back and found its way
back to Leon who made another run on goal and scored.
Ronan once again was magnificent at the back and to be honest all the
boys smelt victory was in their grasp.
The next goal came from a great bit of vision from Andrew Thompson our
keeper who is a pleasure to have in the team. He received the ball from
a break down in the Amble attack and so Connor was free on the right.
With the accuracy of an Exocet he threw the ball for Connor to run onto.
There were two players in front of him and a third on Leon. He saw his
window and fed the ball into Leon who ran in on goal and the rest they
say is history.
In the dying embers of this quarter we won a throw deep in Ambles half
which Connor picked up. He ran in on goal with lads in the box shouting
for the pass he danced passed a couple of players and shot. From the
craziest of angle the ball found itself in the goal. From one nil down
we were now four one up and hungry for more.
3rd Quarter
The euphoria of our boys when we are winning like this is surely a joy
to behold. It was no surprise that they were desperate for more.
Now I know I have eulogised about Leon and Connor but let me tell you
there were other lads on the pitch who were battling scrapping passing
and moving. They were working just as hard in order for these boys to
shine. James Wilson for the first time in ages began to believe in himself
and started to run with the ball doing neat turns and passes. We had
Spike who is turning into our very own Peter Beardsley tenacious and
silky in skills and Nathan Pattison breaking down moves and is starting
to look for the passes.
The boys cruising continued with the same zeal in this quarter. The
inter play was becoming more confident and the shots kept on being fired.
Spike had chances which were fire wide James hit the bar with a header.
Evan passed a ball out wide which was picked up once again by Leon who
made another run on goal which ended up in the back of the net.
Leon’s fifth came from another pass from defence which was taken
up by Nathan who then fired it down the line to Leon which made it five
for him and six for the Pumas.
When Leon came off the pitch I joked on with him saying it wasn’t
good enough and he should have scored three rather than two. I think
it was slightly lost on him but hey ho.
4th Quarter
A well deserved rest for Leon and Ronan gave the other lads a chance
to put Amble to the sword.
We kicked off and were on the attack straight away. Spike broke through
with a shot which went wide. Connor was linking up from the defence
passing and moving. After some tussles Spike got the ball mid way in
Amble’s half and he did a little “Jinky Smith” move
passing a couple of defenders and slotting a lovely ball through to
Connor where he passed it into the back of the net.
From kick off we regained the ball on the right with Spike again. He
passed through to Joseph who shot wide.
Whilst all this quarter was being played I had this little voice no
sorry big voice in my ear saying “Rob can I go back on?”
It was Leon desperate to do more damage. I think I heard it every minute
and every minute I gave him the same reply “no”.
Once again the ball was in the mix, this time it found its way to Connor
who with his back to goal was trying all kind of tricks just to turn
with the ball and get his shot off.
Eventually after what seemed like an age he pulled it round to Joseph
who than passed it back, now facing in the right direction he shot and
scored.
The game was being played in Amble half and we had a series of corners
and goal kicks. Spike was constantly picking up the kicks and running
with them. The first time he shot wide the second he controlled with
his chest ran on goal shot and scored. It was a great goal by the fiery
little fella. The final goal of the game from another break on the right
with Joseph breaking clear and firing in a delightful cross into the
middle for an eager James to finish off.
Ten - one to the Pumas and happy shields faces all around. So happy
I got the pick and mix chocolates out and got the lads to queue up for
them. We some how gained an extra player in the queue who looked suspiciously
like Sonia. Leon’s mum and I think she went a away with a mars
bar or two.
Just a note for Amble whose heads never dropped and whose coaches should
be applauded for being a great bunch of lads.

Pumas
unlucky again
The Pumas produced another excellent performance against one of the
favourites to win their league. The Pumas matched their opponents for
skill and gave their all for three quarters of the game before tiring
at the end.
The Pumas started the 1st quarter on the attack with a superb long kick
from keeper Andrew Thompson reaching Spike Houghton just over the half
way line, Spike passed to Conor Mckenna who hit an excellent shot which
went inches over the bar. The Pumas put their opponents under great
pressure which resulted in one of their defenders shooting against his
own post with his keeper well beaten while trying to clear the ball.
At the other end Evan Ward brilliantly blocked a goal bound effort.
Then as a Coast striker broke free and was one on one with Andrew Thompson,
as he reached the penalty spot Ronan Dunwoodie came racing back from
behind him to produce an excellent sliding tackle to clear the ball
for a corner just as the striker was about to shoot. Andrew Thompson
then made a superb save to keep the score line 0-0. Conor Mckenna then
shot just wide and on the next attack Conor passed to Spike Houghton
who raced into the penalty area but the keeper dived bravely at his
feet just as he was about to shoot. Ronan Dunwoodie played a superb
through ball from defence to Conor Mckenna who had a great shot saved
again by the keeper. The 1st Quarter ended 0-0 with the Pumas slightly
on top.
The second quarter was again end to end with little between the two
sides, Andrew Thompson made a superb double save firstly with his legs
in a one on one with the opponent’s striker and then he tipped
the rebound from the six yard line over the bar. Andrew Thompson almost
scored a goal as his long kick from his hands bounced in front of the
opposition keeper and he scrambled to tip it out off the line. James
Wilson had a good shot which went inches wide before Andy Thompson saved
brilliantly again from a powerful shot from six yards out. The game
continued to swing from end to end with Nathan Pattison having a shot
saved by the keeper and then Conor Mckenna passed to James Wilson who
hit a great shot from the edge of the box which went just wide. The
2nd quarter ended 0-0 and both teams left the pitch to great applause
for their efforts.
The 3rd quarter continued to be end to end with few goal scoring chances
but with some great football being played and some excellent battling
in the midfield area. Conor Mckenna had a good shot blocked before Coast
broke away and took the lead. This goal spurred Coast on and Andy Thompson
was called upon to make another two great saves. The 3rd Quarter ended
0-1.
The 4th quarter was similar to the third with most of the play in the
midfield. With only a few minutes left the Pumas had their best chance
of the game Spike Houghton broke away and fed the ball to Leon Snowdon
on the right wing, Leon raced up the wing cut inside beat the last defender
but shot into the side netting from an acute angle with the keeper beaten.
Within seconds Coast went up the other end and scored their second goal.
The Pumas did not give up and Spike Houghton had a great shot saved
on the line and then at the other end Spike saved a shot on the line.
The game ended 0-2 with both teams and their coaches appreciating the
quality of the football that had been played and the sporting manner
in which it was played. The Coast Soccer coach commented on how well
the Pumas had played and on how much the team had improved.
Once again the lads could be proud of their performance in a game where
they matched one of the leagues favourites throughout the game. Andrew
Thompson was superb in goal making many great saves and with his great
distribution, he made a superb double save and also nearly scored again.
At the back. Nathan Pattison, Ronan Dunwoodie and Evan Ward were excellent
in defence dealing with everything that their opponents through at them.
Conor Mckenna in his new role in central midfield was competitive throughout
the game and was always hard and sure in the tackle giving nothing away
along with Spike Houghton who never stopped running either attacking
or chasing back they were both awesome. James Wilson, Joseph Myers and
Leon Snowdon produced some excellent attacking football which gave their
opponents, especially their keeper some anxious moments. The Pumas could
again count themselves unlucky against a very good Whitley Coast Soccer
side and if they continue to play like this they should win more games
than they lose, they need not fear anyone they are well capable of competing
with the best. Well done lads you were a credit to North Shields Juniors.

Late
Injury time goal robs unlucky Pumas
The Pumas produced an excellent performance for their first league
game of the season and were unlucky not to win against good opponents
conceding a late injury time equaliser after leading 2-0.
The Pumas brought their good pre-season form in to this game having
finished runners up in the Ashington and North Shields tournaments.
The Pumas dominated the 1st quarter producing some great moves and had
plenty of chances. Andrew Thompson in goal kicked a long ball to Conor
Mckenna on the half way line he slipped it to James Wilson whose shot
was palmed away for a corner by the keeper. Then Nathan Pattison won
the ball on the half way line passed to Leon Snowdon who turned his
man brilliantly and hit an excellent shot which was again turned away
by the keeper for another corner. The Pumas deservedly took the lead
when Joseph Myers squared the ball to Leon Snowdon on the right wing
his cross was met at the back post by Conor Mckenna who hammered the
ball home for 1-0. The 1st quarter ended 1-0 and the lads left the pitch
to loud applause from the crowd.
The Pumas continued to dominate the game during the 2nd quarter but
Barca gradually started to get more into the match. On a rare breakaway
by Barca Andrew Thompson had to make a brave dive at the striker’s
feet. Then Conor Mckenna won the ball in midfield played a great ball
to Spike Houghton who shot inches over the bar. James Wilson then shot
narrowly wide before Leon Snowdon saw the keeper of his line and shot
from distance which again went narrowly wide. Then after a scramble
in the box Spike Houghton hammered in the second to make it 2-0. The
Pumas continued to pile on the pressure with Spike Houghton making a
great run past several defenders he passed to Leon Snowdon whose shot
was saved by the keeper. The 2nd Quarter ended 2-0, the lads left the
pitch to more loud cheering.
There were very few chances in the third quarter with the game now becoming
end to end with both teams competing well in the midfield area. The
Pumas went close when Joseph Myers crossed and Conor Mckenna was unlucky
to see his shot hit the side netting. Barca pulled a goal back half
way through this quarter but the Pumas did not let their heads go down
and came roaring back. Conor Mckenna produced a magical turn and hit
a great shot which again hit the side netting and from a Conor Mckenna
corner the Goal Keeper dropped the ball on the line before it was scrambled
away by his defenders. The 3rd Quarter ended 2-1.
The 4th Quarter continued to be end to end with the Pumas having given
their all but after all of their superb efforts they were starting to
tire. They also picked up three injuries which saw Evan Ward have to
leave the field and Conor Mckenna and Spike Houghton struggling to complete
the game limping their way to the final whistle. Barca started putting
the pressure on but defenders Nathan Pattison and Ronan Dunwoodie were
resolute and stood strong in defence under increasing pressure as the
game approached the end with Barca desperate for an equaliser. Although
tired the Pumas still created some good chances with Nathan Pattison
winning the ball and passing to Leon Snowdon who provided a superb cross
which was scrambled away by defenders before it could cross the line.
Joseph Myers then hit the post with the keeper beaten and from a long
kick from Andrew Thompson, Joseph Myers slipped the ball to Spike Houghton
whose shot was pushed over the bar by the keeper. Leon Snowdon raced
clear beating three men his shot was spilled by the keeper but was again
scrambled away before it could be put in the net. With the lads tiring
fast and several suffering knocks the lads were unlucky to concede an
injury time equaliser which was scrambled into the net. Again the Pumas
came roaring back Ronan Dunwoodie won the ball at the edge of his box
raced over the half way line beating two men passed a great through
ball to Spike Houghton who shot just wide. The game ended 2-2 and although
the lads were disappointed to concede an injury time equaliser they
could be proud of their performance in a game where they dominated for
most of the game against one of the better teams in our league. They
can take great heart from this performance. Andrew Thompson was a rock
in goal and his excellent kicking helped create several chances for
his team mates. Nathan Pattison, Ronan Dunwoodie and Evan Ward were
excellent in defence. Conor Mckenna and Spike Houghton dominated the
midfield winning almost every tackle, they were involved in most of
the attacking moves but still managed to chase back and support their
defenders when needed. James Wilson, Joseph Myers and Leon Snowdon caused
the Barca defence lots of problems providing many moments of skill.
The Pumas could count themselves unlucky and if they continue to play
like they did today then should have good season. Well done lads.
