Match Reports
North
Shields Juniors Lisbon Under 10’s
Champions 2008
Lisbon under 10’s have finished their season as Champions
of the N.M.S.L Under 10’s Bundesliga. With 14 wins from 14 games,
they’ve scored 61 goals between them and conceded only 12 which
is the best defensive record in all 5 divisions of the N.M.S.L under
10’s. Lee and Gordon would like to say a big thank you and well
done to all of the players, it’s been a pleasure to coach them
throughout the season.
We would also like to thank all the parents of the Lisbon Lads, here
goes, if any are missed we’ll just buy them a drink!!: Gavin,
Alan & Paul; many thanks to this trio for refereeing our games this
year, You were always impartial and always honest, something we may
not have admitted to at the time. Julie, Andrew, Leigh, Craig, Louise,
Susie, Dave, Jacqueline, Pam, Lynn, Lindsey & Pete thank you all
for turning up to support your sons and the team. Believe me some teams
don’t get this and you have been as much a part of Lisbon winning
this league as the team itself. Our better halves, Helen and Lynn, each
week Helen sells the coffees & teas, Lynn does the much admired
(and needed!!!!!) match report notes and they both keep the cash flowing
by doing the raffles, thank you both.

Bundesliga League
North Shields Juniors Lisbon v FC Morpeth
Match Day 14 of the Bundesliga arrived and as another great team in
red were being crowned Champions of the Premier League Lisbon’s
season drew to a close. Lisbon saw out their fixture list with a home
game against their nearest and fiercest rivals, FC Morpeth. Lisbon had
the title already in the bag so today was all about seeing if the lads
could do what so many teams have been unable to do and that was finish
with a 100% record. Also on the line today was the record for having
the meanest defence in all five divisions. As the crowd swelled to record
proportions, there seemed a certain tension in the air. Was the presence
of the Porto management on the sidelines casting eyes over Lisbon players
causing the lads a little anxiety? mmmmmmmm possibly. Lisbon were down
to nine with Cameron the only absentee, did he need further rest after
the exertions of the Skegness Tournament? More than likely!!!!! As for
the Skegness Tournament it can be summed up in a few words:
We won a couple, we lost a couple, we ate some good food, we ate some
junk food, we all went swimming, we all didn’t sleep much, we
all spent a fortune and we all had a cracking weekend!!!
First Quarter
Lisbon started today with an unusual set up, Ross and Alex were both
starting in unfamiliar roles, read on. Ewan was in goal, Liam was on
the right side of defence and Ross was on the left side of defence.
Matty M sat in the middle of the park with Jacob on his left and Alex
on his right. Nathan was up front leading the line. Matty K and Luke
were the substitutes for the first quarter. Captain for today was Ross,
he met the Morpeth captain in the center circle and won the toss. Lisbon
kicked off; the early exchanges saw Morpeth playing some good football
but Liam and Ross in his new left side defensive role coped easily.
From a Lisbon goal kick Ewan launched a ball up field to be met by Nathan
who controlled, turned and shot just wide. After some good pressure
Lisbon forced a corner which Jacob took, the ball found Alex who in
turn cut it back to Ross, Ross looked up and slid a pass to Matty M
whose shot just went over, excellent football lads. Lisbon then forced
a throw in on the right which Liam took, he threw to Alex who shrugged
off a challenge and sent in a powerful shot which beat the keeper but
crashed against the crossbar. The passing football continued with some
great interplay between Jacob and Nathan which was a joy to watch but
Morpeth stood firm in defence. Just before the whistle went Morpeth
were awarded a corner, the ball was swung in low and hard, Lisbon attacked
the ball, Liam got there first and cleared the danger up field. The
quarter ended with the scores at 0-0
Second Quarter
Alex and Matty M dropped to the bench as Lisbon reshuffled the midfield,
Matty K replaced Alex on the right, Jacob switched to center as Luke
took up the left sided position. Morpeth were quick out of the blocks
at the start of the second quarter and Ewan was forced into making a
couple of early saves, which he did with confidence and authority. Matty
K then carried the ball down the right flank and cut the ball back for
Jacob to shoot, the effort was well saved by the Morpeth keeper. Ewan
then very nearly pulled the same stroke as he did the first time we
played Morpeth, yes you guessed it he nearly scored!!!! He launched
a monster clearance which hurtled its way towards the Morpeth goal;
it had the keeper all over the place as he scrambled the ball over the
bar. The keeper obviously composed himself as the resulting corner taken
by Jacob was well punched out and cleared to safety. The play was end
to end with Liam heading clear, and then as Ross won the ball he spotted
Luke making a quick probing run and slid him in. Luke carried the ball
then looked up to see Jacob in a great position, Luke played a pin point
pass which Jacob took in his stride and volleyed just over. Next up
some great passing football from Jacob and Nathan resulted in a shot
from Matty K which was well saved. Matty K then went on a surging down
the right wing; he whipped in a great cross which forced the keeper
to push over the bar for a corner. The corner was the last action of
the second quarter and just as it was successfully defended by the Morpeth
defence the Ref blew for half time, the score sheet still blank.
Third Quarter
Back into the fray came Alex and Matty M, Ross remained on the left
side of defence as Alex replaced Liam. Matty M came on as direct replacement
for Jacob and we were off again. We would like to give an extra mention
to Ross at this point. Having never played in a defensive role for Lisbon
before, Lee & Gordons request today could well have daunted the
lad. Nothing of the sort! Ross looked comfortable on the ball and helped
set up many an attack from a deeper role and his natural tendency to
tuck in and cover meant defensively he looked a natural. Matty K resumed
the attack with another great effort again with his left foot, that
left foot of his is getting plenty of practice of late. From the resulting
clearance by the keeper Morpeth went up the other end and Alex had to
make his own defensive clearance. Morpeth then carved out their best
chance of the game. A Morpeth midfielder burst through and got off a
powerful shot which bounced back off the post just past the outstretched
boot of the forward following in. Luckily Ewan’s reactions are
as quick as lightning and he gathered the ball before anyone could react
to the rebound. Matty M then showed great strength to hold off a Morpeth
defender and shoot just wide with the keeper diving full length to tip
the shot round the post. Matty K took the resulting corner, he swung
it in and Matty M headed just over the bar. Then it was Nathan’s
turn, he collected another long kick from Ewan, flicked it over the
defenders heads but volleyed just wide, great skill but the miss frustrated
the Lisbon attacker and he kicked the ground in frustration and disappointment.
The third quarter ended 0-0. Nathan walked to the side line and sat
down, the Ref then had a word with Lee and Gordon after a Morpeth player
accused Nathan of lashing out at him. Now Nathan denied it, Lee and
Gordon didn’t see it, the Ref didn’t see it, the supporters
didn’t see it and the Morpeth manager didn’t see it. So
a controversial incident at the end of the quarter left everyone from
Lisbon a little bemused, was this a ploy from Morpeth to upset things
and put Lisbon off balance? We think so, we also think they were a little
sick of being made fools of by Nathan’s superior skill. That last
piece of action leaving the Morpeth player grasping at straws to get
one over on Nathan.
Fourth Quarter
As it was his turn to sit out Nathan had time to calm his righteous
anger, joining him on the bench in the last quarter was Ross, today’s
captain fantastic. Matty K pushed on up front as Jacob rejoined the
battle on the right flank. Liam replaced Ross as we finished the season
with our tried and trusted defensive triangle of Ewan, Alex and Liam.
Matty K continued where he left off with an effort just wide. While
Morpeth looked to step up a gear this was met equally by Lisbon, Luke
was working tirelessly on the left with both Matty’s and Jacob
firmly in control. Jacob was seen to run the length of the pitch to
support his defenders, never letting Morpeth settle for a moment. The
game looked like it was heading for a nil nil, but just as in the last
match, Lisbon were not finished yet. Nathan was sitting on the side
lines; he said six resolute words which made Lee and Gordon change the
team. “Im not drawing with this lot” Morpeth had tried to
get under his skin, big mistake. “Luka” was the cry; Luke
came off to the reception and applause he deserved. Nathan was asked
to come back on for the last 4 minutes, Morpeth faces were scowling
and they did so even more with what happened next. Within 2 minutes
Matty M picked up the ball on the right, beat one challenge and took
the ball towards goal. Nathan made his run to the back post when on
cue Matty M squared the ball past the keeper’s outstretched hand.
Nathan did well to control and just when it looked like he may miss
his chance he curled that right boot of his around the ball and lashed
it into the net. Just deserts, poetic justice, karma or whatever you
want to call it, the crowd cheered so loud you would think this goal
had won us the league. There was still time though for Morpeth to attack
and what looked like a possible equalizer saw Matty M again in the right
place to put his head in the way of a goal bound effort and clear to
safety. The final whistle blew on a fantastic season 1-0 to Lisbon.
It’s difficult to know how to finish a match report like this
as there are so many people to mention and so many to thank. We will
deal with this in an end of season report to follow next week. Today
was however a sweet 14 wins from 14 games, absolutely brilliant lads,
with again everyone contributing one way or another. Ross and Alex excelled
today in unfamiliar rolls. The defence in general has been as tight
as it gets, only 12 goals conceded which is the best record in all 5
divisions and that’s now official! The forward players are determined,
energetic and skillful to name but three of their attributes, they came
up with yet another winning goal in a season that they’ve scored
a staggering 61 goals between them. As said in the last match report,
it’s not wise to bet against them.
The Mighty Lisbon, Undisputed Champions
Of The Bundesliga
Scorers:
Lisbon – Nathan Middleton (Sweet Justice)
Oppo’s Man of The Match: Matty Mcleod
He worked tirelessly today, was at the heart of all our good play, covered
every inch of the pitch and earned the accolade over some equally impressive
teammates. He set up the goal and cleared off the line in the dieing
seconds. Excellent game lad
Managers Man of The Match: Ross Conway / Luke Sinclair
Ross was asked to step up to the mark today and was given a baptism
of fire. In a difficult game he looked like he had has always played
there. He had the captain’s armband and gave a captain’s
performance. Luke also had a great game, he linked well with Ross and
the rest of his midfield. He was always looking for that killer pass
and for a right footer on the left wing he was magnificent. Well done
both of you!!!!

Bundesliga League
Cramlington Cobras Roma v North Shields Juniors Lisbon
When you get to this part of the season and your doing as well as Lisbon
are every match report seems to start with the phrase “crunch
match” today’s is no different. This was the first of the
two remaining games that could win the league outright for Lisbon; even
though a point would secure the title outright everyone wanted the win.
After the team talk in Fridays training session it was made clear to
Lee and Gordon that the Lisbon lads all wanted to keep the run of wins
going and make it thirteen from thirteen. Lisbon had a full squad to
choose from as all the players had made themselves available for today’s
match. Ross had returned from the USA where he’d been swimming
with the dolphins and working up a sweat at David Beckham’s training
camp. Cameron had flown in fresh from altitude training with Chris Bonington
in the Lake District. It was good to have both lads back on what was
hopefully going to be a day of celebration for the whole team (there
was cake and champagne for everyone, whether the lads got the points
required or not). Match Day 13 had arrived and Lisbon’s last away
game of the Bundesliga season took them on the short journey to Cramlington
Sporting Club, home of Cramlington Cobra’s Roma. In fact it took
longer to get to the pitch from the car park than it took to get to
the Sporting Club from Whitley Bay. The weather was playing its part,
warm with rain and more rain but the pitch was in good condition, slightly
heavy but more than playable. After Paul Sinclair had done a quick photo
call for the team Lee did the warm up and put the lads through some
passing exercises. The ref blew his whistle and asked Lisbon to take
their places on the pitch.
First Quarter
Captain for today was Ewan “The Cat” Bryson and after winning
the toss took his place in goal. In today’s starting line up we
had Cameron “The Enforcer” Dowson and Alex “The Butcher”
Sursham as the Defence. In right midfield was Jacob “The Terrier”
Browell, in the center was Matty “The General” McLeod, on
the left was Luke “The Force” Sinclair; up front Nathan
“The Predator” Middleton was on the prowl. Sitting out the
first quarter was Liam “Gandalf” Davis, Ross “The
Ghost” Conway and Matty “The Wizard” Keenan. Right
from the kick off Lisbon began to pass the ball about with ease, Cameron
and Nathan were involved in the first exchange which led to a corner.
Jacob swung the corner in and it was scrambled away by the Cobra’s
defence. Then Jacob chested a ball down and carried the ball past the
halfway line, looked up, saw Luke and slipped the ball through to him.
Luke cut inside and laid a ball off to Matty M who unleashed a thunder
bolt of an effort, only to see the Cobra’s keeper pull off a great
fingertip save and tip the ball over, what football all round. Jacob
then took an in swinging corner which the keeper again had to tip over,
was this a sign of things to come? Jacob was at the heart of everything
in the opening exchanges; it was good interplay between him and Cameron
which led to another corner. Frustratingly this corner was defended
well, Cobra’s were flooding the box and Lisbon couldn’t
find a away through. Cobra’s were defending for their lives, how
Lisbon weren’t at least two goals up was a total mystery. Rarely
was the Lisbon defence troubled in this quarter, Cameron was taking
all the throw ins in Lisbon’s half of the field and with his long
throw coupled with Matty McLeod getting his head to virtually every
flick on Cobra’s were constantly on the back foot and couldn’t
get near Lisbon’s goal. Alex was called upon to head clear up
field which set up another Lisbon attack as Matty M picked up the loose
ball, took it on and got his shot away, the keeper again saving well.
Nathan was linking well with Luke, on two occasions he took the ball,
knocked it back to Luke who in turn played it down the channel for him
to run onto. Cobra’s only just recovered to smother the attacks,
lovely give and go football. The last move of the Quarter typified the
Lisbon play, when great passing between Jacob and Nathan saw Luke shoot
just wide. Luke was clearly reveling being back in midfield. The whistle
went as the quarter ended goalless, but wasn’t it a pleasure to
watch? Lisbon came off to great applause.
Second Quarter
Into the second quarter and Liam came on for Cameron in defence, Matty
K came on up front as Nathan dropped to the bench. Jacob took up the
center midfield position as Matty M took a rest, Luke switched to the
right flank as Ross lined up on the left. Matty K was straight into
the action as he burst through and took a shot, a fine effort turned
round the post for yet another corner. Luke stepped up and floated a
dangerous ball into the box. Matty K showed good movement as he made
a run to the near post, got his head to the ball but sent it agonizingly
just over the bar. Cramlington Cobra’s then had an attack but
good covering from Liam forced their first effort on goal wide of the
mark. Luke again was involved in setting up the next attack, after a
good penetrating run down the right wing he sent through Matty K inside
left, who took the ball in his stride and shot just wide. Liam took
up where Cameron left off on the throw in stakes, his long throw in
again coupled with a Lisbon head flicking it on to put Cobra’s
on the back foot time and time again. Lisbon were penalized on two or
three occasions for pushing and shoving, rightly so to be fair and its
something we’ll have to work on in training as it gave Cobra’s
a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions. The set pieces were defended
well as all the lads took up their correct positions and each marked
a player. The free kicks weren’t great and went out for goal kicks
on each occasion but it invited pressure on Lisbon when it shouldn’t
have. The football was a little less fluent in this Quarter but if not
for the Cobra’s keeper again and again the score would have been
so different. The Quarter ended with the score unbelievably still at
0-0. The goal had to come; the lads were playing the better football
and just had to keep plugging away.
Third Quarter
Alex sat this quarter out as Cameron came back on to join Liam in defence,
Nathan came back on up front, Luke dropped to the bench as Matty K switched
to the right flank and Matty M replaced Jacob in the center of midfield.
We really pushed a high line in this quarter, Liam was left to cover
their lone attacker and Cameron pushed up to a more midfield position.
Cameron took the first throw in of the quarter which he arrowed into
the box, it was again met by Matty McLeod who put his header just over
the bar. The pressure was relentless in this quarter, Lisbon had a great
chance which involved the ball going through the whole of the midfield
in a flowing movement to Ross who was ghosting in on the back post.
Unfortunately he just couldn’t quite get there and the chance
was gone, never mind Ross, you showed good movement and awareness to
get into the position, next time son. Soon thereafter Lisbon earned
a free kick in shooting distance, Cameron stepped up to whip in a powerful
cross/shot that rattled the upright and came back off the post to safety.
The goal just would not come and it has to be said the Cobra’s
goal keeper and defenders were having a great game, the game being played
mostly In their defensive third.. Lisbon had a couple of decent penalty
shouts that weren’t given as one of their players was seen to
raise his arm in the box and on another occasion a crafty push in the
box were both ignored by the referee. The time was flying by and before
you knew it the quarter had ended with the score still 0-0. That score
line would do it, all the lads needed was a single point to be outright
winners of the league. But sometimes football can be a cruel game and
Cobra’s could score a fluke goal at anytime, the game was a on
a knife edge. On performance the lads deserved more than any point out
if this game, COME ON LISBON!!!!
Fourth Quarter
The last quarter saw Alex, Jacob and Luke re-join the fray. Alex came
back on for Cameron in defence Jacob replaced Ross on the left and Luke
replaced Matty K on the right. From the outset Lisbon again looked the
more likely to score, as attacks were mounting but no real chances were
created. Jacob was probing away with Luke and Matty M running things
around him, Nathan was waiting to pounce if a chance came his way. Liam
was again the rock at the back as Alex ventured further up field to
join in the attack. I feel I should mention that Ewan was a virtual
spectator in this game, he had to make a couple of saves but other than
that his greatest challenge was staying focused. This is something that
he did well and also his distribution was excellent. His goal kicks
were clearing well over the halfway line and he was getting his angles
right. Kicking out of his hands offered the opposition no respite; he
had the Cobra’s defence at sixes and sevens every time he released
the ball. Midway through the Quarter Matty M took a knock in a challenge
with a Cobra’s player, the Cobra’s player came off worse
but Matty K came on to give him a breather. Yet again it’s the
sign of a good team when subs can be made that don’t weaken a
side. While we all thought the required point was in the bag when Lisbon
earned a throw in on the left. Alex dropped back and covered Liam’s
position as Liam stepped up to make the throw. Cobra’s were expecting
another long throw so a quick move that caught them napping saw Liam
throw the ball short to Jacob. Jacob turned and darted in between two
players, looked up and saw Nathan on the shoulder of the last defender.
Nathan stepped aside and right on cue Jacob sent the ball between the
two players, Nathan let it run past him and sprinted clear. Now with
only the keeper to beat he pulled the trigger, the crowd held their
breath, but not for long as the ball nestled in the corner of the net
“GOAL”. The celebrations were there for all to see, in one
of the biggest and loudest goal celebrations seen this season the Lisbon
faithful let their joy spill out. 1-0 Lisbon. With only two minutes
left, Lisbon weathered a thirty second spell when Cobra’s attempted
to get back into the game. Lisbon responded by lifting the tempo and
going for the jugular, with Luke going close in the dying seconds, the
match ended as it started with Lisbon on the attack. Well done lads
you deserved it.
THE TITLE IS THEIRS, LISBON ARE NOW THE
OUTRIGHT CHAMPIONS!!
As a pop star diva once said “Lets Get This Party Started”,
corks were popped and bottle tops were popped off as champagne and lemonade
were sprayed all over everyone and anyone. As captain today Ewan was
the first to lift aloft the trophy, and boy did those lads celebrate.
Every player drank deep from a league trophy that they earned with their
own blood, sweat and tears; after all they had earned the right, thirteen
wins from thirteen games with only one still left to play. As all the
parents sipped the bubbly and feasted on cake, the lads continued to
drown both Lee and Gordon, but they didn’t care, Gavin also took
a soaking, as did Jenny, Lisbon’s chief raffle ticket seller.
The smiles on all the faces make it all worth while. Next weekend there
is no league game as the Mighty Lisbon are off to Skegness for some
well earned R and R, oh and a football tournament. The last game of
the season verses Morpeth will be tackled upon their return, fourteen
wins from fourteen games? You wouldn’t bet against it.
Scorers:
Lisbon – Nathan Middleton
Oppo’s Man of The Match: Luke Sinclair. Luke’s
link play with the forwards and midfield was excellent today, his skill
is a delight to both his coaches and team mates. His team mates know
he’s more than likely going to beat the defender so they’ve
just got to make sure they’re in the right place to receive the
ball. He deserved the man of the match award, well done lad.
Managers Man of The Match: The whole team
Again the team. It’s been done a few times but today it had to
be all of you, on a day like today all we’ll say is this: CHAMPIONS!!

Ellington Juniors v North Shields Juniors Lisbon
After last weeks crunch game verses Morpeth today’s fixture for
the mighty Lisbon was just as big if not bigger, Match Day 12 saw us
traveling to Lynemouth to take on the team in third place, Ellington
Juniors. Having already played both Ellington Juniors and FC Morpeth
twice this season Lee & Gordon have both said that the games against
Ellington have been a lot closer and in their opinion Ellington are
the better of the two teams. Lisbon have recorded a 2-2 draw and a narrow
2-1 victory over Ellington, both being home games at John Spence so
the away fixture was sure to make for interesting viewing. A win today
would mean the league title would be Lisbon’s, at worst to be
shared with Morpeth, a draw would leave them needing two points from
two games to win the league and losing is not even being contemplated.
Lisbon went into this match with only eight players; Ross and Cameron
were both missing however Luke was back from his trip to the big smoke,
welcome back lad, not a moment too soon.
Captain for today’s fixture, fresh from his five goal mauling
of Morpeth was Nathan Middleton. He got his team together to do the
team talk but was rushed by the ref to get the game under way, all he
had time for was a quick hands in and a “Go Lisbon”. Anyone
who thought today’s game would be easy were in for a shock, Steve
(Ellington’s Manager) has had his team together for three years
now, they may not be the best players around but they’re a solid,
tight knit unit and know each others games inside out. Ellington play
good football on a very wide pitch and also know a thing or two about
the physical side of the game. Lisbon would have to match them in all
aspects of the game today to get a result.
First Quarter
Team play lists weren’t really needed today; Lisbon played the
whole of today’s game with the defensive unit which has served
them so well, Ewan in goal with Liam and Alex as the defence. With one
sub the four advanced players wouldn’t get much of a rest, in
the middle was Matty M, on the left was Jacob, on the right was Matty
K and Nathan was up front, Luke was sub for the first quarter. Nathan
as captain met the opposing captain and ref in the (invisible) center
circle, he won the toss and kicked off. The opening exchanges were very
even and the midfield battle was played at great tempo. Lisbon’s
passing game was made for a pitch this size, unfortunately the grass
in the center was non-existent and on the wings it was really long so
passes were either skipping through ahead of players or sticking in
the grass. Matty M was holding his own in his midfield battle, distributing
the ball both left and right, sliding in Matty K who was making some
penetrating runs down the right wing. Jacob was having an all out war
with Ellington’s no. 10, a big lad and not against pushing players
on the blind side of the ref. Lisbon had a two minute spell where they
were pressurizing the Ellington defence, Nathan had just failed to get
on the end of a good cross from Matty K and had a shot well saved by
the big Ellington keeper when the break through came, not from open
play but from the penalty spot. Matty M picked up a ball just outside
the box, carried it and drew a clumsy challenge just inside the area,
the ref had no option but to award the penalty. Up stepped Liam and
hammered the ball through the keeper’s legs and into the net.
Liam was seen to wheel away with a cheeky grin, did you mean that lad??,
0-1 Lisbon, afterwards he admitted he’d kicked the ground but
when your lucks in your lucks in. What a great start in a tight game,
unfortunately we didn’t hold onto the lead for very long as a
couple of minutes later it was cancelled out by another penalty, this
time awarded to Ellington, a ball wasn’t cleared and a skirmish
in the box led to an Ellington player going down, the spot kick was
duly dispatched, 1-1. A minute later the whistle blew, Lisbon went into
the first quarter break just as they had the previous week, all square
and all to play for.
Second Quarter
As Luke had sat out the first quarter, he came on to replace Matty K
on the right wing. Immediately excellent link play between Luke and
Jacob saw Jacob shoot just wide. Play then transferred straight up the
other end and Ewan was called on to save well from a strong Ellington
shot, tracking back Jacob cleared the danger and played the ball back
up field. Jacob then returned the compliment to Luke, Luke shooting
just wide. As the game ebbed and flowed, Lisbon had to do their share
of defending, first Alex and then Liam had to be strong and as always
they were. Matty M was called upon to defend and had to head clear on
more than one occasion. In attack lovely interplay from Luke to Nathan
saw the Ellington keeper have to turn the ball round the post. From
the corner Jacob’s shot hit the side netting, seconds later a
clearance by Ellington fell to Matty M whose snap shot arrowed straight
at the keeper. Finally the ref penalized the Ellington No. 10 after
another blatant foul, from the free kick Liam played the ball through
to Matty M who in turn found Jacob, he passed inside to Nathan, Nathan
opened up his body for the shot, what a shot!! but it was well saved
and pushed round for a corner. Possession was very even in this quarter
but Lisbon had more shots on goal. The quarter ended and the teams were
locked at 1-1, like previously stated this was the best team (after
Lisbon) in this league and the Lisbon lads were giving their all.
Third Quarter
As previously mentioned the subs don’t really need thinking about
when your down to eight players, back on came Matty K in a straight
swap for Nathan up front. Matty K got straight into the action, beating
the defender to the ball and pulling out wide for the shot. The angle
wasn’t great and the resulting shot was straight at the keeper
but what was fantastic to see is he got his head up and was looking
for a team mate. Matty M had won the ball in midfield and was trying
to get up in support, Jacob had a player in front of him and Luke was
even wider right so Matty had no option other than to take the shot
on. The fact he looked for another option was well noted. Halfway through
the quarter Matty M had to come off for a breather. Matty M had been
on the end of some meaty challenges from Ellington’s no. 10, some
legal and some not, a rest was ordered. We reshuffled the pack, Nathan
came back on up front, Jacob slotted into central midfield, Matty K
went to the right and Luke to the left. Alex then picked up a ball inside
his own half and carried the ball deep, just managing to get his pass
away while under challenge to Matty K, who sent his effort just wide.
A minute later Alex did another run from deep and was brought down by
an Ellington player, in our eyes from behind but the ref played on and
only a last ditch clearance by Liam allowed Lisbon to get their shape
back and get back into position. Again the play switched end to end,
with both defences it has to be said on top. The last action of the
quarter saw Luke send Jacob in to shoot, just wide. 1-1 the score still
remained. Lisbon were getting a lot more shots away but Ellington’s
big No.1’s goal stayed un-breached as the lads came in for the
last break of the game.
Fourth Quarter
Into the last quarter, would Lisbon find that extra gear needed to
win the game and end Morpeth’s challenge to win the league outright?
Again the early part of the quarter was very even with both teams trying
for the win but not wanting to give anything away. Halfway through the
quarter Matty M came on for Jacob, Jacob came off the field having played
the whole game up until this point and he’d given his all. Matty
M was chomping at the bit to get back on and the turning point in the
game came a few seconds after the substitution, lightning struck or
was it thunder? It was neither; it was Alex “The Butcher”
Sursham. Ellington’s superb (and irritating) no 10 carried the
ball from defence into attack. Alex was seen to move closer, the Ellington
player looked up, that was all Alex needed to see, in a split second
he put in a great tackle that won the ball. Unfortunately for the giant
No. 10 the follow through caught him in the ribs and was unable to continue
as he limped off clutching his chest. It has to be said timing tackles
is hard at any level but to be able to do it at this age is an inspiration
to the team, just ask them as some of them will bear witness in training.
The challenge on Ellington’s best player seemed to lift Lisbon
and took the wind out of Ellington, literally! The very next attack
saw an Ellington player handle in the box, “PENALTY”. Up
stepped marvelous Matty M, neither Lee nor Gordon could watch, but there
was nothing to worry about as the penalty was dispatched, 2-1 Lisbon.
The Lisbon lads tails were well and truly up and they continued to press
so Ellington couldn’t build up any pressure. The lad’s smelled
victory and with two minutes left on the clock came the third Lisbon
goal. Luke pounced on a loose ball after some good pressure by him just
outside the box and he got a shot away, the ball hit the post, ran along
the line and hit the other post. Now what followed is being hotly contested
by Luke and Nathan, Luke says it was already over the line but on hand
was Nathan, ever the predator to smash it into the net, 3-1 Lisbon either
way. An independent spectator gave the final say and the goal has been
credited to Nathan. Head up Luke your fine work has been noted by your
coaches. Jacob also swore blind that Luke’s shot had crossed the
line but the cheeky grin on his face and the fact he’s right behind
Nathan in the goal scoring stakes had Lee and Gordon slightly skeptical.
Lee asked the ref “how long to go” the ref said ”one
minute” cue the longest minute in living history, eventually the
full time whistle blew. The (joint) title was Lisbon’s, amid great
celebrations.
Twelve wins from twelve matches, with two to play its simple, one more
point and Lisbon are the outright champions. As goal difference matters
not in this league they have now guaranteed gold medals and a share
of the league title. These lads won’t settle for that though.
At times it wasn’t pretty and Lisbon weren’t at their best
but they all gave 100% effort, they were dogged and resilient and wouldn’t
be beaten, today was all about grinding out a result against a very
well organized and physical Ellington team. They did that and more.
Scorers:
Lisbon – Liam Davis, Matty McLeod & Nathan Middleton
Oppo’s Man of The Match: Matty Keenan
In a game that had both teams in a midfield battle Matty’s performance
shone, his wing play was superb and he deserved the man of the match
award, well done lad.
Managers Man of The Match: Matty Keenan / The whole team
See the above notes on Matty K, it says it all. Lisbon you’re
attitudes were excellent today. Every team that has ever went for a
title has had to go to someone else’s ground and grind out a result,
It’s a sign of champions that they can do that. Lisbon matched
Ellington all the way and came out on top. We can only say again what
we have already said before, you lads have done this as a team, you
are worthy (joint) champions!!

Bundesliga League
FC Morpeth v North Shields Juniors Lisbon
Crunchtime Match Day 11 saw the Lisbon faithful make
the trip up the A1 to Craik Park, for the first of two games against
our nearest rivals for the Bundesliga Championship FC Morpeth. Just
as in October it was a lovely sunny day in the Morpeth countryside,
a little soggy underfoot but otherwise a perfect day for clean passing
football. This was a classic six pointer and a victory would put us
top of the table for the first time this season.
We would like to start by a quote from the great Roman Emperor Gaius
Julius Caesar “Concordia Res Parvae Creseat” which roughly
translated means “Work together you will accomplish more”
We have always said that if we were to have any chance of winning this
league we’d have to do it as a team not as a bunch of talented
individuals, so going into today’s game with Luke and Ross away
on holiday meant that the remaining eight would have to work together
more than ever to achieve victory. Captain for today’s monumental
fixture was Jacob Browell and if there is a Marcus Aurelius in our team
it’s him, lion hearted and brave. He gathered his team together
and issued words of wisdom and encouragement. We’d like to make
our apologies in advance for any passages of play that we have missed,
the game was played at break-neck speed and It was hard to keep track
of all that went on, any way here goes:-
First Quarter
As the gladiators of both sides entered the arena, a hallowed silence
passed across the pitch, only to be broken by the cries of Lee and Gordon,
now there’s a surprise. We started today with Ewan in goal, Liam
and Alex in defence, a midfield trio of Cameron, Matty M and Jacob with
Nathan up front. Matty K was substitute as his international private
jet hadn’t landed yet from sunny Spain. Lisbon won the toss and
kicked off, we don’t know what was said by the captain but right
from kick off Lisbon forced a throw in Morpeth’s half, and as
in training on Friday night, Cameron took it, Matty M sat deep with
Nathan loitering nearby. The ball arrowed to Matty M and while under
challenge the ball broke to Nathan who buried the loose ball into the
net, 1-0 Lisbon. It’s great to see one from the training ground
lads, well done. We hardly drew breath and the score was 2-0, again
from a superb ball over the defence by Matty M, Nathan sprinted clear
to finish. Wow what a start, Jacob then went close from another long
throw in by Cameron. Strange as it seems this great start seemed to
unsettle the game plan, Lisbon lost its shape as everyone piled forward
on the attack, we lost the ball with every player bar Liam ahead of
the Morpeth Midfield so as the ball broke Morpeth came firing back.
Firstly three Morpeth players linked together to bypass Liam, than the
remaining two gave Ewan no chance as they chose between them which one
was going to score, they did what was needed and the ball ended up in
the net, 2-1 Lisbon. The Lisbon lads regained their shape but Morpeth
scored again virtually straight away as a right wing corner was powered
home from the head of a Morpeth player. To be fair the Morpeth player
showed great awareness and movement to get in front of his marker and
pull off what was a fantastic header, Lee was even seen to applaud the
goal, and as he said at the time its not very often you see a goal at
this level which would grace the CV of Cristiano Ronaldo or any other
Premiership player you’d care to mention. Game on lads, to Lisbon’s
credit this was just the spur that they needed as this game was never
going to be as easy as the first 5 minutes had suggested. Or so we thought??
please read on. Matty K’s jet had landed so just as Drew had finished
putting him through some warm up exercises the whistle blew. 2-2 at
the end of the first quarter, all square and all to play for.
Second Quarter
Now this time the words of wisdom were spoken by the managers, the lads
listened intently. Matty K joined the fray on the right of midfield,
Cameron dropped to the bench to rest his over worked arms, gladiators
were renowned for spear throwing and this lad would always carry our
money for the distance he can throw a ball, if Morpeth however thought
that would relent, think again as two more long distance spear throwers
were still in the arena, Liam and Nathan step forward. After a couple
of minutes of nip and tuck Lisbon regained the lead, an excellent defensive
header from Alex found Matty M who carried the ball forward and slipped
the ball through to Jacob who was steaming into the box, the pass was
perfect and Jacob shot across the keeper (not for the first time either)
into the net, 3-2 Lisbon. Morpeth then fought back and an excellently
struck free kick found Ewan in commanding form as he made a difficult
save look easy. Then as Morpeth pressed forward the ball was cleared
downfield from a scuffle in the Lisbon area, Nathan again controlled,
turned and sped past the last defender he finished the move with style,
4-2 Lisbon. Lisbon were beginning to take control and Morpeth looked
shell-shocked, goal number 5 came from a poor goal kick by the Morpeth
keeper, the ball fell to Nathan’s feet, well he needed no telling
and with one touch, he pulled the trigger, the ball ended up in the
net for his fourth and Lisbon’s fifth. The second quarter ended
with Lisbon 5-2 ahead and in a commanding position.
Third Quarter
Cameron came on in the right midfield position; Matty K
went up front as Nathan grabbed a more than well earned rest. For Morpeth
to get back in front in this game would mean our lads conceding four
goals, something that’s only happened once this season and that
was against Cramlington Juniors first team. In your dreams Morpeth.
So with the game all but won this quarter was all about closing the
door on Morpeth and playing on the break. For as long as we have Ewan
in goal with Liam and Alex in front that is pretty much assured. Today
Liam took to the pitch with a stomach upset and the way he played you
would never think it, he knew we were down to eight and wouldn’t
let his team mates down, if he could get through this quarter a rest
in the last would await the Lisbon gladiator. Alex as if to respond
to his partners predicament upped his commitment and made tackle after
tackle, and if they were breached Ewan in goal was unbeatable. Matty
M at this point also dug deep and on two occasions cleared in defensive
positions, the long throw in’s from Cameron were forcing Morpeth
on the back foot time and time again. Jacob on the left was ably supported
by Matty K who was now up front, they were letting nothing get back
and the move of the quarter was reserved for Lisbon. Liam picked up
a ball in defence, carried it into midfield and released the ball to
Jacob on the left, he looked up and saw Matty K in a great position
and laid a pass into his path, just as the trigger was being pulled
a goal saving tackle came in from a Morpeth defender. The third quarter
ended and the score remained 5-2 to Lisbon.
Fourth Quarter
Nathan came back on so Liam could take his well earned
rest, he took his position up front as Matty K switched to the right
flank and Cameron dropped back into defence. It has to be said Cameron
does this with ease, as he is commanding and assured and as with Liam
he allows Alex to venture further forward. Something which Alex did
next as he won yet another tackle, as he carried the ball forward, he
looked up and saw Matty K in the box, the pass was on the money, as
was Matty K’s shot but it was well saved by the Morpeth keeper,
not your day for goals today Matty K but your link play was excellent.
Lisbon were then forced into some last ditch defending as the home side
looked to salvage something, Cameron got back to clear a ball off the
line and Ewan made another save, but that was that!!. A second after
a strong shout for hand ball wasn’t given, Matty M turned inside
the box with the ball at his feet and was dumped on his behind, this
time the penalty was given and up stepped Jacob to fire the penalty
home for his second of the game, 6-2 Lisbon. A couple of minutes later
after great work from Matty K closing down defenders the ball broke
to the predator himself, Nathan who had the easiest of tasks to slot
home, He turned to Matty K with a thumbs up and a pat on the back, 7-2
Lisbon. Lisbon broke forward at will and a great move saw Matty M pass
to Nathan in the box who unselfishly dummied to allow Jacob in to slot
home for his hat trick and Lisbon’s eighth. This was beyond belief
and soon after the full time whistle blew, Lisbon left the field victorious
with an impressive 8-2 goal fest.
As stated at the beginning of today’s report, we all have to
work together. And that’s just what happened today as with most
of the season. Matty M assisted his defenders superbly and set up 3
goals with his vision and skill. Ewan again dominated his goal with
authority. Liam was a colossus at the back, repelling all that came
his way and playing the ball through midfield. Alex stepped up to the
mark and probably made more tackles today than ever and played all 4
half’s doing so, Cameron played in two positions and is rapidly
proving what a good defender he is and with the weapon of that throw
he possesses turns defence into attack instantly. Matty K only came
back into the county late on Saturday, could have asked to rest but
he didn’t and played a full part in today’s win, jet lag?
Not this lad he was a power house. Nathan, well what can you say, 5
goals and set up another for his nearest rival in the goal scoring stakes,
now that’s teamwork. And last but by no means least Jacob, he
scored a hat trick that almost went unnoticed next to Nathan’s
five goal feast, but not by Lee, Gordon or his teammates, he covered
every blade of grass today and was a true Captain.
The lads at the back have now conceaded only eleven goals, which is
the fourth best defensive record of the forty two teams in all five
divisions. Not to be outdone the midfield and forwards have chalked
up an impressive 56 goals over eleven games. Eleven wins, zero draws
and zero defeats, today’s win guarantees the lads silver medals
in this league, they need to pick up four points out of a possible nine
to guarantee being champions.
You wouldn’t bet against them either.
We would like to end with the following quote “Nemo Timendo Ad
Summum Pervenit Locum” which means “No men or boy by fear
will ever reach the top.” You lads have now reached the top and
are 3 points clear with a game in hand, brilliant, lets take it to the
title boys.
Scorers:
Lisbon – Nathan Middleton (5) & Jacob Browell (3)
Oppo’s Man of The Match: Ewan Bryson
What can we say, he’s playing with confidence and skill, always
looks like he’s going to come out on top against the opposing
forwards and it usually has to be something special to beat him. Excellent
game lad
Managers Man of The Match: Nathan Middleton
Nathan was unstoppable today, willing to set up his team mates and still
got five goals, when he’s in this mood I fancy him to bury his
chances 90% of the time and we’ll work on the other 10% in training

Bundesliga League
North Shields Juniors Lisbon v Guidepost Juniors
Match day 10 of the Bundesliga arrived and after a week of warm weather
(16 degrees on Friday) it was back to winter, snow was falling, all
around us, children playing (football), having fun… well sort
of, and that’s enough of Shakin Stevens, now back to business,
Lisbon were today playing host to Guidepost Juniors, the reverse fixture
of the Star Wars epic that was match day 5. Missing today was the wing
wizard Matty Keenan, don’t know if your mum has a crystal ball,
but what a good decision it was to head off to the sun this week, inspired
decision Lynn. See you both at the next game. Captain for us today was
Luke Sinclair who after a great performance last week followed up with
a good shift in training on Friday, you deserved it lad.
First Quarter
Now to the match, as previously mentioned Captain today was Luke Sinclair,
he was starting on the right of midfield, Matty M was in the middle
and Jacob was on the left. Ewan, Liam and Cameron were the defensive
triangle and Nathan was up front. Lisbon won the toss and kicked of
as the snow fell. The early exchanges were very even with the visitor’s
keeper the busier, making saves from Matty M and Luke. Good play from
Nathan saw Matty M shoot over from long range as did Luke just after.
Then after a right wing corner, a defensive clearance fell to Jacob
who took a touch and rifled the ball into the corner of the net. 1-0
Lisbon. The play was stop and start by both sides, often passes weren’t
reaching their target, balls were clipping heals and the ball just wasn’t
running for either side. As they sought a quick response a Guidepost
midfield player ran down our left flank and whipped the ball in and
as the ball skipped up off the wet surface it struck a Lisbon hand,
‘PENALTY’ was the cry from the Guidepost supporters and
true enough a penalty was awarded. Ewan was prepared, he spread himself
and the goal suddenly seemed to shrink to the size of a goal at Guidepost’s
home ground, the rest of the lads stood on the edge of the area awaiting
the charge down. The Guidepost player set himself and drilled the penalty
low to Ewans right, it was well struck but the Lisbon keeper was not
found wanting and got down well to save. The end of the Quarter came
and Lisbon went in 1-0 up.
Second Quarter
Alex came on for the second quarter, slotting into defence for the
departing Liam, Ross came on to the left wing as Jacob also dropped
to the bench, both pulled on the subs jackets and soaked up the warmth,
those jackets we bought for the lads were never more important than
on a day like today, having the lads stood on the sidelines is never
good, Drew stepped in and kept them both warm with some heading practice
and passing drills. The passing game was starting to come together as
the lads got more used to the conditions, not as fluent as usual but
getting there, the weather was worsening as Guidepost looked to equalize,
it was becoming a battle of wills between both midfield’s and
Guidepost got the opening they had been looking for, after a surging
run from the midfield the opposition got off a right wing cross that
was slammed into the top corner by their number 9, 1-1 all square. Guidepost
had their tails up, after a shaky few minutes when Ewan was called into
action with a great block and corners that had to be defended well,
we got to grips with the game, our second goal came as the Lisbon lads
surged forward, the midfield broke in unison to force a corner from
a Guidepost defender. From a right wing corner Ross stole in and shot,
the keeper saved well but in followed Matty M to coolly tap in the rebound,
2-1 Lisbon. Lisbon finished this quarter strongly there was a couple
of goal mouth skirmishes in which the Guidepost keeper showed his worth,
the one at the end standing out the most as we had four outfield players
trying in vain to get the ball over the line: shot, save, shot, post,
shot, save, cleared, shot, save, just wide, it was like a pin ball machine,
how it stayed out is a mystery. The second quarter ended 2-1 Lisbon
Third Quarter
Matty M and Nathan were next to take a break, Liam came on in defence,
Cameron moved up front to replace Nathan, Jacob replaced Matty M in
the middle. Almost immediately Cameron forced the keeper into a good
save with a crisply struck shot, then from the resulting kick Liam was
forced into a last ditch tackle to break down a Guidepost attack, in
the opening exchanges Luke was also called into defensive duties as
they sought another equalizer. Luke then turned defence into attack
and went on a run only to shoot just over. Gradually Lisbon started
to dominate the play and by halfway through the quarter, driven on by
the instructions of Lee and Gordon Lisbon had lifted the tempo of the
game. We started to hold a high line, trying to beat Guidepost back,
Liam was asked to venture higher up the field to take a succession of
throw in’s well inside their half, Alex dropped back to cover.
Jacob was running at the defence and causing them all sorts of problems,
never letting them settle and pressuring the midfield at every opportunity,
Cameron was taking the defenders out of the equation to allow Ross,
Luke and Jacob more room. On the left flank Ross got in on the action
with some determined play to press the Guidepost defence, he won the
ball, took on another player and set up a chance for Luke to shot just
wide, great play Ross, this typifies the effort needed and perhaps inspired
your team to what happened next. Not for the want of trying but no further
goals came, the match remained poised at 2-1 to Lisbon.
Fourth Quarter
Firstly, our apologies as to the accuracy of some of the facts, it
all got slightly blurry and while the important matters are correct
some of the minor points may not be, the weather was about to turn nasty
and reporting was impossible, especially as what was about to unfold,
happened so fast. Anyway here goes. Back into the fray came Nathan and
Matty M, Nathan went up front and Matty M came on in central midfield,
to his right was Jacob and to his left Ross, the usual suspects were
our defensive triangle, Ewan, Alex and Liam. Luke and Cameron pulled
on the subs coats to much relief, three quarters of hard graft in shocking
weather, well done lads, great shift put in by you both today. Lisbon
forced two quick corners in succession, one from a great save after
another Alex long range effort which was headed just over by Ross and
the second corner from yet another save from the Guidepost keeper. In
conditions like today the keepers job was even harder than usual and
the lad in the Guidepost goal saved everything that this Lisbon team
threw at him, and these lads usually score for fun, believe me. As the
snow started to fall heavily again, Lisbon forced another corner, this
time took by Jacob, the ball was swung in and almost on the goal line
was Matty M to nod home and make the score 3-1 Lisbon. What happened
next no one could have envisaged. The snow fall turned to a driving
blizzard aimed directly at the Lisbon supporters, at least the lads
could turn away from it. with less than 6 minutes left Lisbon scored
another five goals… yes FIVE… number four was scored by
Nathan with a tap in after a brilliant run and shot by Jacob, Nathan
having the presence of mind to follow the shot in. Number five was scored
again by Nathan, after collecting the ball with his back to goal just
inside the Guidepost half he turned and outpaced the last defender to
slot home. Number six was Jacob who pounced on a loose ball in the box
to lash home into the roof of the net. Number seven was Nathan’s
hat trick and again a carbon copy on the fifth, what was in that hot
chocolate that Nathan was supping in the third quarter ladies?? I think
we all could do with some. A word for Jacob here, that lad was chopped
down time and time again, his legs were kicked out from under him and
in this cold, wearing shorts its never pleasant. To his credit he got
up (with help) and refused to be replaced, the way he just got on with
it and didn’t want to let his team down had us bursting with pride,
firstly Ross and now Jacob, they may not be the tallest players on the
field but you tell us about bigger hearted players and we will call
you a liar. number eight was scored by Ross who again did what he does
best, ghosting in to slot home on the back post after some excellent
pressure from his team mates. What happened next typifies this team,
Ewan ran three quarters of the length of the pitch, Ross launched himself
into the air and Ewan caught him and lifted him up high, celebrating
in the snow. The Blizzard was forgotten and all the lads celebrated
together. 8-1 the final score. Wow, we were speechless, talk about a
snow blizzard, this was a goal blizzard.
Guidepost were shell shocked, as we all were, you lads never gave up,
stamina, determination and good finishing was what gained this win in
awful conditions, if you lads were in the army you would be in the special
forces for the way you handled the last quarter. Thank you all, the
parents and supporters, this was a whole team effort today. Onwards
an upwards, or at least to hot baths.
Epilogue
We would like to end today’s report by thanking a few people.
As previously mentioned even though we were being treated to intermittent
snow, blizzards and freezing conditions our parents turned out in force
to cheer the lads on, at times they resembled snow men on the touchline
and that support we can tell you is very very much appreciated. Lads
being lads may not say it but we as managers know they need that support,
believe us some teams don’t get it, but we do from you all. The
Lisbon U10’s are the team on the pitch who get the results and
quite rightly get the accolades, but the team off the pitch are just
as important, without parents and helpers it would be an impossible
job. Helen was ably assisted on the teas and coffee’s counter
by Jenny who also doubled up as the chief raffle ticket seller, the
wine today was donated by Linsay and Pete. Everyone helped with the
goals putting them up and down and taking all the kit back to the cars.
Drew helped warm Ewan up and kept the subs moving during the times they
were sat out, Drew is a canny player in his own right and its sometimes
interesting to see the way the lads absorb information via him, he’s
fishing for an assistant coaches jacket with his initials on it and
if he carries on being this helpful he might just get one off us. Thanks
to Dave for doing the match notes, he was standing in for Lynn, who
was ill today so get well soon to her and we hope the result was a pick
me up. The last quarter had a lot of action and it was played in awful
weather conditions, the book was wet, the pen was frozen to his fingers
and it was hard to write, but write he did, until it proved impossible,
again a great effort and much appreciated. Thanks to Gavin for refereeing
today’s game, probably never expected the weather to be quite
as bad, but in very difficult conditions neither side could quibble
about the fairness of his decision making. Lisbon are lucky in that
it doesn’t matter whether its Gavin, Paul or Alan refereeing our
games we always have someone willing to step up, other teams aren’t
that fortunate and are lucky if they have one person willing to do it,
it can be a thankless task sometimes, just ask them.

Oppo’s Man of The Match: Ewan Bryson
Ewan got the oppo’s man of the match, he saved the penalty and
commanded his box. He wasn’t under a great deal of pressure but
being in goal on days like today is hard, concentration, staying loose
and keeping warm is a lot easier to do outfield. He linked with his
defenders well all game and never put a foot wrong.
Managers Man of The Match: The Supporters / Jacob Browell
We don’t really want to single anyone out today as you all gave
it everything, today we award it to those who stood on the touchline
supporting the lads. Jacob gets the mangers vote and arm band for next
week, Jacob was yet again the bite in midfield, simply put we are always
a better team with him in the side.
Well done Lisbon, that’s ten out of ten, only four more league
games to go, keep it up lads.

Ashington AFC v North Shields Juniors Lisbon
On Match Day 9 Lisbon made the pilgrimage to Hirst Welfare Center,
the home ground of Ashington AFC. Lisbon again had the opportunity to
record another season double as the reverse fixture at John Spence finished
4-2 to Lisbon. Today’s kick off was scheduled for 12 o’clock
so everyone had an extra hour to turn themselves round, well sort of
as finally the clocks have gone forward, we’ll be training outside
soon enough. After an excellent training session on the Friday and a
clear the air team talk the lads looked mean and up for the game ahead,
we were at full strength so there would be some team reshuffling to
do. The heavens had opened the night before and as we approached, the
side of the pitch looked like a bog, luckily the pitch it self looked
in good condition, a slick fast pitch suits our passing game down to
the ground. As there wasn’t enough room to swing a cat never mind
do a proper warm up at pitch side we warmed up on the adjoining third
generation astro turf. After a further five minutes or so warming up
on the pitch we were ready for the off. Captain for today was our midfield
warrior Jacob Browell and after he stoked his team up we got under way.
First Quarter
We started the game with Ewan in goal, we thought we’d shake
the side up a bit so we used Cameron as the holding defender and Alex
had the more advanced role. A midfield trio of Luke on the right, Jacob
in the middle and Ross on the left supported Nathan, our rampaging forward.
The Ashington manager glanced at our substitutes, Matty M, Matty K and
Liam, obviously weighing them up, no good looking there mate, if you’re
expecting it to get easier when they come on your making a deadly mistake.
The pressure on Ashington’s goal was immediate as right from the
kick off both Jacob and Nathan had efforts saved by the home keeper,
Luke also got in on the act as he watched a great effort shave the post.
As Ashington put a speculative ball into our half of the field an unbelievable
headed clearance was made out of defence, a ball which came out of the
clouds was met firmly by Alex, it nearly rooted the Lisbon player into
the ground and clearly dazed him, Nathan got on the end of the clearance
and tried to lob the keeper, the lob just looped over the bar. Like
Lee and Gordon keep saying, a good defensive header like that one puts
so much pressure on the opposition. At this stage of the game it has
to be said the role Cameron was asked to play in defence seemed to come
naturally, he moped up anything that got through the midfield and he
played with confidence, he never put a foot wrong, something which continued
for the rest of the time he was on the pitch. Back to the game, with
chance after chance the opening goal was surely just around the corner
and when the goal eventually happened it came from a corner, Ross swung
in a ball from the right and up rose Jacob to flick the ball on, an
Ashington defender tried to clear the ball but it had already nestled
in the corner of the net. At the end of the first quarter it was 1-0
Lisbon and we were in full control of the game.
Second Quarter
Liam replaced Cameron and joined Alex in defence, with Ross sitting
out Luke switched flanks to the left and Matty K slotted in on the right
wing, Matty M replaced Jacob in the center of midfield. Right from the
kick off came the second goal, a long ball from the kick off saw Matty
M and the home keeper clash, the keeper came off worse and as he went
down the ball broke to Matty M who did just what we always tell them
to do, he slid it home then looked to see what decision had been made,
all eyes looked at the referee but the goal had been given, the old
saying of always playing to the whistle was never more evident, well
done Matty M, for that and also checking that the keeper was uninjured.
Ashington pulled a goal back two minutes later with a block buster of
an effort which cannoned in off the bar, 2-1 Lisbon. Thereafter Lisbon
were dominant, Luke collected a ball inside the Ashington half and embarked
on a run which ended with a fierce shot just left of goal. Then something
happened which had Lee vehemently questioning the referee’s decision
(respectfully). A long ball over the top by Ashington was met by Liam
who flicked a header towards Ewan, Ewan made as if to catch the ball,
glanced down realized he was just outside his area, chested it down
instead and then cleared the ball. The referee gave a handball, what
really stuck in the throat was Lisbon had done exactly this control
and pass exercise in training on Friday and both Gordon and Lee were
proud to see Ewan’s vision in rescuing the situation so fantastically
only to have the ref penalize him for a hand ball that never happened,
luckily nothing came of the free kick. After some good hold up play
by Nathan he laid the ball up for Matty M who sent an effort sailing
just over the bar. Then came the third goal, Ewan rolled a ball to Matty
K who turned carried the ball to the half way line and sent a twenty
five yard pass over to Nathan who preceded to control in one touch and
unleash an unstoppable shot into the net, 3-1 Lisbon. Nathan then turned
provider for Luke to force a save from the home keeper and with half
time approaching Alex picked up a loose ball just inside in the Ashington
half, he took it forward, looked up and as the ball bobbled unleashed
a half volley which sailed just past the keepers left hand post, with
keeper rooted to the spot, this was the last kick of the quarter and
it ended 3-1 to Lisbon.
Third Quarter
For the third quarter Cameron came on for Alex at the back, Ross replaced
Luke on the left wing, Nathan dropped to the bench, Matty K switched
to the forward role which allowed Jacob to come on in the right wing
position. We know its said time and time again but Lee and Gordon take
great satisfaction in knowing that this team is never weakened when
substitutions are made, it has to be demoralizing for the opposition
as Lisbon have no weak links in the team, in the words of Kevin Keegan
‘We Just Love it’. The third quarter continued in the same
pattern as the previous two, the passing football was flowing and one
of the moves of the match came with smart interplay in the midfield
between Matty M, Ross and Matty K which resulted in Matty K surging
down the left wing and just as it looked like he was going to check
his run and have a shot on goal he rolled the ball forward and crossed
the ball with his left foot into the area for Jacob who had made an
excellent run on the blind side of a defender to slot home, 4-1 Lisbon.
The football involved in that goal was what we all stand in the rain
to see. Lisbon then earned a free kick just inside the Ashington half,
Liam stepped forward to take it and did what he was asked to do, he
sent a high ball into the penalty area which caused all sorts of problems
to the keeper who flapped the ball out for a corner. The corner was
swung in and Ross unleashed a powerful shot which was just over, Matty
K and Matty M both had shots in quick succession which forced saves
from the keeper as the third quarter ended 4-1 to Lisbon.
Fourth Quarter
All the Lisbon players had now sat a quarter out and had two quarters
on the pitch. Ross, Matty K and Cameron stepped down for the start of
the fourth quarter, so we lined up with Liam and Alex at the back, Luke
on the right, Jacob on the left, Matty M in the middle with Nathan up
front. Because of the team shape at kick off Alex found himself in the
unusual position of the right wing when the ball broke to him, as no
one was ahead of him he carried the ball, nutmeged the defender and
whipped in a cross which was deflected out for a corner “get back
in position” was the call, after a “well done Alex great
run”, everyone wanted in on the act. Usually in the last quarter
the team trailing press forward in search of a goal, Ashington were
no different, Liam and Alex used their experience to snuff out the forward
players attempts, Ewan had to be called on to make a couple of saves
which he dealt with comfortably. The closest Ashington came to our goal
saw Liam tracking a through ball which unfortunately didn’t have
the legs to go out, he glanced up and as another Ashington player came
across turned between them and cleared the ball. The midfield continued
to pass the ball around with ease, Luke was proving a thorn in the side
of the Ashington’s left sided players and Jacob created an opening
for Luke to shoot just wide. At one point Nathan collected the ball
and although he was in a slightly wider position he would have been
well within his rights to have a shot but he saw Jacob in a better position
and slid him in, unfortunately Jacob’s shot just went wide, fantastic
Nathan its been noted lad. Alex then pounced on an Ashington clearance
and sent in a looping ball straight back into the home teams box, Matty
M showed good strength and awareness to get himself into position to
glance a header backwards into the back of the net, 5-1 Lisbon, Alex
might have been convinced it was going in anyway but Matty M did what
he should and made sure, well done Matty. Halfway through the quarter
Cameron came on for Liam, Ross came on for Jacob and Matty K came on
for Nathan, again all slotting into the places of the players they replaced
with ease. The play continued with Luke torturing the Ashington left
flank, Ross was making some great runs in support down the left wing,
unfortunately for Ross the ball hardly came his way, keep making the
runs though Ross, they were noted by your coaches and in football these
are the things you watch out for, for every fantastic bit of link play
which results in a goal ten pass by with the move breaking down. Matty
K was linking well with all of the midfield and the final and sixth
goal came about when Matty K picked up a ball from Luke inside right,
he beat one defender, drew the keeper and slotted inside the left hand
post with a cool precise finish, 6-1 Lisbon and that was the final score
as the final whistle blew. All that was left to do was shake hands,
for Jacob as captain to dish out the sugar replacement capsules to the
Lisbon lads and give Ashington some jelly babies as well to cheer them
up.
There were so many plus points today it is difficult to mention them
all, but here goes. Cameron was introduced into the team as a defender
for the first time today and performed like he had always played there.
The clubs top scorers of Nathan, Jacob, Matty K and Matty M all created
chances for each other, some finished and some not, but the point is
none of them were selfish as they put the teams needs first before that
of individual glory. Luke is now showing the form that made him the
midfielder he is after playing as an emergency defender at times this
season, Ross is finishing the season strongly and will be a miss while
away for the back end of the season and with Ewan, Liam and Alex at
the back they have the second best defensive record of all 5 divisions,
that is why Lee and Gordon call them the rock!! Today’s win guarantees
us the bronze medal in the league, we might not be able to finish lower
than third but with five games left lets not stop there lads, onwards
and upwards!!!

Excellent wing play today Matty, you played with speed and awareness
which is never an easy thing to do. You made goals and scored one as
well, the first part is just as important to team and you were up there
for the man of the match from Lee and Gordon as well.
Managers Man of The Match: Luke Sinclair / Matty Keenan
Luke and Matty K, you two were pure power and skill today, with you
two in the same team we give every team we meet headaches, Luke we know
you’re a very skillful player, but today you were up against strong
physical opponents and you came away from 90% of your challenges with
the ball, you were a tiger.
Well done everyone, you all played well, no one had an off day and
on days like today it seems wrong to pick a man of the match, you all
deserved that accolade.

North Shields Juniors Lisbon v Cramlington Jaguars
On Match Day 8 Lisbon entertained Cramlington Jaguars at Collingwood
playing fields, for the first time this season Lisbon were playing their
home game away from John Spence due to the closure of the school over
the Easter period. This week we had the opportunity to record the second
double of the season following on from last weeks triumph over Santos.
We all awoke to the sight of snow falling, the sun came out and although
there was a cold wind blowing the snow melted and it was perfect for
football. Lisbon fielded the same squad as last week with the only absentee
being Cameron. Captain today was Matty McLeod who after last week’s
performance only just shaded this accolade from Jacob Browell. So after
a warm up that consisted of the usual stretches and ball work Lisbon
munched down on a few Jelly Babies and Wine Gums for that little bit
of extra va va voom.
First Quarter
Ewan started in goal, sitting as usual in defence was Liam with Luke
just in front of him. Center midfield was the stomping ground for usual
suspect, Matty M, on the wing to his right was Matty K, to his left
was Jacob and up front Nathan lined up as the center forward. Sitting
out for the first quarter were Alex and Ross. Jaguars won the toss and
Lisbon started the game off with the wind in their faces. Lisbon went
straight on the offensive, good interplay from Matty M and Nathan saw
Nathan shoot narrowly wide. The passing game of Lisbon was from the
outset crisp, clean and decisive, the training session outside on Friday
obviously set the lads up nicely for today’s game. Luke pushed
up a high line and left Liam to cover the Jaguars lone attacker. To
his credit Luke supported his midfield but also always monitored the
back line to make sure Liam wasn’t put in a two on one position.
Again reveling in his right wing role Matty K went marauding down the
wing time after time and the Jaguar defence was having a torrid time
trying to cope with him. Matty K set up the first goal of the game as
he sent in a vicious cross which Jacob nipped in to convert, 1-0 Lisbon.
Towards the end of the quarter Nathan collected a ball just inside the
jaguars half and with some fantastic close control beat one, two and
three defenders and was now bearing down on goal, he picked his spot
but saw the keeper pull off a great save, such a great piece of individual
skill deserved a goal but the quarter ended 1-0 to Lisbon.
Second Quarter
As the second quarter began Alex came on as a direct replacement for
Luke, Ross came on to the left flank, Jacob switched to the right and
Matty K dropped to the bench. Eyes turned to Lee as he was seen to be
taking his North Shields Jacket off, then the next layer was coming
off, I mean it had warmed up a bit but sun bathing was definitely out
of the question, oh hold on Susie had a night shift afflicted memory
lapse and she’d forgot her jacket???????? what a gentleman (or
idiot) anyway back to the football, the game was pretty much going from
one end to the other and as the wind died down and jaguars seemed to
wake up, good defensive work from Alex and Liam contained most of the
attacks but Jaguars got off a couple of shots which Ewan in the Lisbon
goal was forced into saving, nothing the giant keeper could not handle
though. Lisbon then won a throw in on the right which Nathan took to
Jacob, Ross then made a great run down the left, Jacob looked up and
saw Ross ghosting in unmarked from the left, the cross that picked out
his run was perfect and Ross slotted home and make the score 2-0, thereafter
good passing between Matty M and Ross saw Ross shoot just wide. Lisbon
then forced a corner which Ross took short to Jacob who cut in and forced
a good save from the Jaguar’s keeper, this was the last action
of the quarter as it ended 2-0 Lisbon.
Third Quarter
Liam and Jacob dropped to the bench as Alex went to the Back; Luke
came on just in front of him. Matty K came on in the right midfield
position, Matty M held on to the central midfield position, Ross was
still on the left and Nathan was still up front. The wind picked up
again (typical) and again jaguars stepped up the play this time forcing
Ewan into action firstly to tip a blockbuster of an effort over the
bar and then a double save first with his feet and then he got straight
up to palm the rebound round the post. Ewan it has to be said has had
a rather quiet season so far mainly due to the players in front of him,
but today all of a sudden Lisbon needed him and Ewan was there like
the class keeper he is. Slightly against the run of play Lisbon scored
a third, again this was due to the persistence of Nathan who would not
let a Jaguar’s defender settle in the box, he picked up the loose
ball and slotted it home, 3-0 Lisbon. The warning signs had been there
from the Jaguars and again a move from the opposition saw the number
two unleash a ferocious shot which sailed into the top corner giving
Ewan no chance. 3-1 Lisbon, Jaguars tails were up and thereafter hit
the bar and forced another good save from Ewan. Plenty of encouragement
was being given to the Lisbon lads from the sidelines, not just from
the coaches either as the spectators drove the lads on. Just before
half time the jaguars captain was forced off the pitch dazed from a
clash of heads with Alex, neither player pulling out of an aerial challenge
with Alex again doing what Lee has instilled in them all, attack the
ball and never take your eyes off it, had Alex not listened perhaps
the outcome could have been worse, as the ball was won but the follow
through was hard, happily the jaguars player was fit to resume after
a short rest. The third quarter ended 3-1 to Lisbon with Lee and Gordon
glad to get them in for a pep talk
Fourth Quarter
Into the last quarter and back on came Liam and Jacob, fully rested
and ready for action. Matty M and Nathan donned the subs jackets and
we lined up with Liam and Alex at the back, Jacob in the middle, Ross
to the left and Luke to the right. Up front with instructions to drive
the keeper and defenders crazy was Matty K. With the wind at our backs
all the balls we put into their box would be dangerous.
The instructions to the team were clear, one more goal for Lisbon would
kill the game off but if jaguars scored their tails would be right up.
Lisbon responded, a move started by Liam in defence saw Matty K burst
clear; he picked out Luke in space who carried the ball and shot just
wide. Jacob then forced a great save from the keeper, Lisbon were dominant
again. The home team forced a left wing corner which was taken by Matty
K, he swung the ball in and Luke got on the end of it, he controlled
the ball and fired in the shot in two fluid movements, the keeper palmed
the ball back into play only for the ball to fall for Matty K who after
taking the corner was bursting into the box, his controlled powerful
shot rippled the back of the net, 4-1 Lisbon, Jaguars looked crest fallen.
Luke then had a further effort sail just past the post, would his goal
come, “keep buying raffle tickets and it will come” was
the cry from the touchline. Jaguars rallied themselves and forced a
free kick well within shooting distance, yet again Ewan was not to be
beaten and pulled off a good save. As the game drew to a close there
was still time for Luke to shoot just wide and then finally as all hope
of a goal for Luke looked lost some great work from Ross on the left
saw the ball crossed in and as the ball broke to Luke just inside the
box he rifled the ball into the net to tumultuous applause from the
touchline. The final whistle blew, 5-1 Lisbon.
What was evident today is that team’s win things not individuals,
there is no ‘i’ in ‘Team’, with five different
scorers and fluid attacking football throughout the team we looked a
good bet all day I can tell you. Later that day came the news that title
rivals Morpeth had been beaten. Both teams are now level on points and
goal difference at the top, Lisbon have played a game less so have a
game in hand.
They blinked first
Great stuff lads.

North Shields Juniors Lisbon v North Shields Juniors Santos
After yet another week of inactivity Lisbon today played host to fellow
North Shields team Santos, at least this weekend Lynn Keenan found getting
to both her sons games easy. The crowds had turned up in force for this
local derby and the weather was fair, a little chilly for the fans but
that’s nothing new. Missing again for Lisbon was Cameron, nothing
to do with Scottish internationals this week but with Cameron, Linsay
& Pete all struck down with the lurgy we were down to nine.
First Quarter
Lisbon lined up with Ewan in goal, sitting deep in defence was Liam
with Alex just infront of him, a defensive triangle you have to say
has never let us down all season. Center midfield and anchor man was
Matty M, on the wing to his right was Luke, starting the game in a position
the lad just relishes, to his left with a look of resolve on his face
was Jacob, who stood stretching his hamstrings waiting for the whistle
to blow. Center forward was Matty K who stood on the edge of the center
circle chomping at the bit to close the ball down as soon as the whistle
blew. Sitting out for the first quarter were Nathan and Ross, both looking
very professional in their subs jackets. Today’s captains met
in the middle, Alex had the armband for Lisbon and Ivan for Santos,
Santos won the toss and kicked off. It was evident from the off that
Santos were going to flood the midfield as they set up with two in defence
and four across the middle, this they did manfully, space was at a premium
and Santo’s passes were the more accurate in the opening minutes,
to combat the man for man marking Alex was asked to push up into a higher
position as the spare runner, almost immediately this swung the game
in Lisbon’s favor.
As pressure on Santos goal now started to mount Alex utilized his free
role and regularly broke in support of the midfield, he also had a fierce
shot well saved by Curtis in the Santos goal. Luke was beginning to
find more freedom on the right and Matty M was showing good awareness
through the middle, picking out his players with some great passing
and link play. Lisbon forced a corner on the right which Luke swung
in with precision to see Alex rise like a salmon and head, yes head!!
It was a good solid header that just flew wide, His team mates were
picking out Alex’s late runs at will, Jacob was bossing the left
flank and slid Alex in yet again and he forced another good save from
Curtis. He was clearly reveling in a more advanced role that Santos’s
tactics allowed, but when would the goal come? an excellent shot from
Matty K was well saved again by Curtis with the rebound falling to safety.
The goal did come however, not from open play but from a penalty, a
cross into the box was punched down by a Santos hand and the referee
pointed to the spot, every Lisbon eye was on Lee and Gordon waiting
or the nod ‘MATTY McLEOD’ up stepped Matty M who buried
it down the middle low and hard. 1-0 and that was how the first quarter
ended.
Second Quarter
As Jacob and Liam took their turns on the bench, Ross went to the left
side of midfield and Nathan took up the center forwards role. Matty
K pushed out to the right of midfield, Luke took up the advanced defender
role and Alex sat deep in defence. As Lisbon strived for more goals,
the passing football that had been so evident in recent games just failed
to click into place and although chances were being created Santo’s
goalkeeper and defence for were standing firm.
Midway through the quarter Santo’s manager Joe bellowed in an
effort to rally his troops “ we are playing the better football”
both Lee and Gordon had to agree, “Come on lad’s Joe’s
telling the truth, come on Lisbon get your passing game going”
this was the spur the lads needed.
The Lisbon midfield took the game by the scruff of the neck. Matty
Keenan was starting to dictate the play down the right wing with some
great cross field balls Luke had a goal bound effort cleared off the
line, then another effort was well saved again, a move involving Luke
and Nathan saw Nathan’s shot palmed away by the keeper but in
followed Matty M to fire in the rebound, 2-0 Lisbon, the football was
now starting to flow and not to be outdone by Alex, Matty M got on the
end of a sublime Ross cross to head (yes head) just over. The half way
point was upon us as the second Quarter came to a close 2-0 Lisbon.
Third Quarter
Back on came Liam and Jacob for Matty K and Matty M. Liam and Alex
at the back, Jacob in the middle, Luke to the right, Ross to the left
and Nathan up front. Within minutes Lisbon were 3 up. Nathan picked
up the ball just inside the Santo’s half and beat 2 defenders,
looked up and saw Jacob on the overlap running into the box, he slid
a ball through and Jacob shot back across the keeper and into the far
corner, great finish and again practice on the training ground pays
off yet again. What happened next defiantly came from the training ground,
as a good headed clearance from Santos was falling out of the sky, Liam,
who was loitering on the half way line set himself, under no challenge
let the ball bounce and met it on the half volley, the ball soared towards
goal, unfortunately for Lisbon it was struck too well and just clipped
the cross bar, much to the relief of Curtis in the Santos goal “ooohhh
went the crowd”.
Another person reveling in playing more in midfield was Luke who it
seemed could not get past Curtis today no matter what he tried as yet
again he was thwarted from an excellent effort. Alex once again picked
up a ball in midfield and went on a maisy run until being scythed down
just as he was entering the danger zone. The third quarter ended with
Lisbon now dominant and 3-0 up.
Fourth Quarter
Into the last quarter and back on came Matty M and Matty K, Luke and
Alex dropped to the bench to take a well earned breather, Matty K was
carrying a slight knock so he actually went in goal to allow Ewan another
brief run out in an outfield position, Ewan has power and presence which
is a great weapon to have in these situations. In defence he powers
headed clearances right back into the opposition danger areas, and then
with his pace and power he had 2 shots which the first sailed just over
the bar and the second nearly took the goal out from the anchors as
it rattled the crossbar, Matty M was finding holes that weren’t
there before and had an effort well saved from the Santos keeper. As
yet another headed clearance from Santos was falling out of the sky,
Ewan, not to be outdone by Liam, did a carbon copy of the defenders
volley from the third quarter, the ball again soared towards goal but
again was just over “ooohhh went the crowd (again)” unlucky
lad, perfect technique .
Then came goal number four as a well worked move involving Nathan and
Matty M saw the ball land at Jacobs feet in the box and the ball was
only ever going to end up in one place, and it did, 4-0 Lisbon, as the
game drew to a close a special mention goes to Matty Keenan who made
some excellent takes, saves and communicated with his defenders very
well when he went in goal. The confidence he showed belittled the fact
he has had no formal goalkeeping coaching and now means lee and Gordon
have another weapon to their bow in the Lisbon Likely Lads quest to
deliver the Bundesliga title to North Shields Juniors AFC. The final
whistle blew, 4-0 Lisbon.
Firstly well done Santos for making this a hard game for Lisbon, they
had to work for the goals today and this was testament to the organization
from their management and skill of the players, and secondly and more
important to us well done lads for sticking in, putting into practice
things we had worked on in training and playing for each other. Well
done!!

North Shields Juniors Lisbon v Ellington Juniors
What should have been week eight of the Bundesliga was in fact only
week six as finally after two weeks of enforced absence we had a game.
Ellington Juniors were today’s visitors to John Spence and boy
did the lads need this game, three weeks without a game is just unthinkable.
As it was it came close to being cancelled as the wind was bordering
on gale force, Santos and Galaxy who had 10 o’clock kick offs
had already cancelled their matches but thankfully the wind had died
down a bit since then and we relocated to the bottom pitch to afford
the lads a bit of shelter. The sun was shining; lee had his shorts on,
game on. The only absentee today was Anakin Skywalker (see previous
match report) had he finally turned to the dark side? Course not, international
commitments north of the border meant he was unavailable for club selection.
A big thank you goes out to the Lisbon parents for the support shown
the night before at the under 10’s race night, those unable to
attend supporting through the race card and donations, cheers people
it means a lot. The late 11 o’clock kick off had in no way been
arranged because of parents tender heads, that was just an advantageous
coincidence. Honest.
First Quarter
Lisbon lined up for the first quarter, Ewan was in goal,
Liam and Alex in defence, Matty M was our midfield anchor with Matty
K on the right and Jacob on the left, up front Nathan led the line.
Ross and Luke were the subs for the first quarter. It’s a joy
that Lee & Gorden revel in to know that when they look at the bench
any change they make will not weaken the team; It causes the opposition
a canny headache to. Ellington won the toss and elected to kick with
the wind, they kicked off and looked like they meant business from the
start and forced an early corner which Lisbon defend easily, however
minutes later Ellington were in front when a loose ball in the penalty
area was hammered home, 0-1 to Ellington. This was the first time Lisbon
had been behind in a game for a very long time, how would they react?
Lisbon had looked a little rusty at first but started to assert themselves
as the quarter wore on. Gordon and Lee need not be concerned; these
lads know not to give up! Lisbon forced a couple of corners with good
pressure on the Ellington defence and then from one such corner the
pressure finally paid off. Matty K swung in a wonderful ball from the
right, Nathan rose highest to nod the ball down only to find Jacob lurking
beyond the back post, in a flash he had controlled and shot with his
left foot back across the keeper and into the net 1-1, thereafter the
quarter ended with Lisbon on top, Liam and Alex didn’t give Ellington
a sniff at goal, Matty M started plenty of moves with some lovely ball
control to beat the opposition before setting Jacob and Matty M away
on some surging runs down the flanks, both putting in some good crosses,
Nathan and Matty M were unlucky not to profit from their team mates
creativity. The score remained 1-1 at the break with Lisbon unable to
increase the score further in our favour.
Second Quarter
Ross came on as a straight swap on the left flank for Jacob
who dropped to the bench, Luke slotted into the advanced defender roll
as Alex took a breather.
Again Ellington attacked with force in the opening exchanges but Ewan
in goal would not be beaten, pulling of a great save. The game ebbed
and flowed, we were attacking with menace and defending resolutely in
equal measures, with Liam and Luke allowing no space for the Ellington
forwards. Their was very little between both sides In midfield and attack
as Lisbon were clearly suffering from little match practice but at the
same time they were beginning to gradually exert themselves as they
had in the first quarter and rode some robust Ellington tackles. Nathan
and Matty M in particular got special attention from the Ellington defenders
who were both big lads, now Nathan ain’t no little’un either
and gave as good as he got which allowed the midfield some space to
work in. Matty K, Matty M and Ross benefited from Nathan’s unselfish
work putting together some good moves. Matt K had his work cut out as
he was directly up against arguably their best player, their number
nine. Although the game was tied at 1-1 the game never looked to be
heading in Ellington’s favour, Lisbon had that extra quality on
the field and it came to the fore. The second quarter ended with the
scores still 1-1 but with Lisbon in control.
Third Quarter
While Matty M grabbed a breather Jacob took up the anchor
role in the centre of the park, Liam dropped to the bench to be replaced
by Alex at the back. Even through the changes we continued to look the
better side Jacob took up where Matty M left off and decided to take
the game by the scruff of the neck, winning tackle after tackle in midfield
and only tenacious and sometimes foul play on more than one occasion
(three to be precise) from the opposition (Ellington No.4 being the
main culprit, wonder if he’ll come to NSJ trials in June? Just
a thought) stopped him from surging forward to set up more attacks.
Matty K on the right was beginning to torture the defenders and was
picking out Nathan at will, Nathan was using his pace and power to more
effect and from one such attack he burst through the defence and as
the keeper advanced slotted home 2-1 to Lisbon. A well deserved lead
and now to close the game out, “Come On Lisbon!!!!”. Almost
straight after the kick off Matty K intercepted the ball and sent a
through ball over the Ellington defence, Nathan again got on the end
of it and lobbed it over the advancing keeper, just to see the ball
drop agonizingly past the post. The move of the match saw a quick throw
in, almost on top of the left corner flag taken by Jacob to Matty K
who flicked the ball into the box first time, when from out of nowhere
came Nathan, “SHOOT”……. “GOAL!!!!!”
the words died in the throats of the Lisbon fans, what a save from the
Ellington keeper! Which actually winded the brave stopper, both sets
of fans and coaches applauded, well done son. We didn’t want the
half to end but end it did at 2-1.
