Match Reports

NMSL – Under 10 Premier League A
21st March 2010
Newcastle City Milan 2 North Shields Jaguars 4

After a 3-0 defeat by Milan earlier in the season the Jaguars went into this game a little nervously but determined to put in a good performance. And what a start it was as the Jags went at Newcastle from the start. The Jags took the lead when Ethan Brown (so he tells me) scored direct from his cross that “no-one” touched. On the big pitch that suited both teams it was the Jags that used the space well and Truman Hub put the Shields boys 2-0 ahead after a great flowing move – and there was still time to hit the bar as well. Sam Terrance came to the rescue on two occasions while Lewis Cass and Joseph Connor at the back were superb. Matthew Cartwright took his turn in defence and made some great tackles before he spent the rest of the game tearing down the left wing. Connor Brown made some incise passes while Luke Geddes was turning the Milan defence inside out. Newcastle though kept coming at the Jags and pulled a goal back in the third quarter. Into the final part of the game and Milan drew level to raise the excitement level a notch. Both teams pressed and the Jags showed great character not to crumble under pressure and Matty Longstaff restored the lead for Shields following a goal mouth scramble where again “no-one” got a touch before it went in. Within a couple of minutes the lead was two goals again as Longstaff hit another to send Newcastle to their first loss in two seasons. A great game of football played in the right spirit with both sets of parents / supporters showing their appreciation at the end of the game.

NMS Premier League A
North Shields Jaguars v Newcastle City MIlan

Another hastily rearranged venue as Preston Grange Stadium was declared unfit to play on Saturday evening, so in the absence of marathon man Mark Cass, Gary and Simon headed off with pooper scoopers to clear the dog dirt from Collingwood.

A hard game was expected against Milan who were top scorers in the league so far and were favourites for the league title. The game started with both teams knocking the ball around well, but it was City that struck first taking advantage of a defensive mix up to lead 1-0 after 5 minutes. City took confidence from that and put the Jaguars under pressure with Sam Terrance making tow fine saves. The Jaguars though began to believe in themselves and gradually dragged themselves back into the game with at times some great football. Truman Hub was causing the visitors defence all sorts of trouble and set up Connor Brown whose thunderous shot smashed against the cross bar. Newcastle always looked comfortable on the ball and counter attacked well – catching the Jags on a number of occasions. The Jags though held their own and defended well. Sam made two more good saves and was ably backed up by defensive trio Lewis Cass, Oliver Baldwin and Joseph Connor. The Jags tried to play football and started it from the back – Matty Longstaff probed looking for opportunities and when the ball went wide both Ethan Brown and Matthew Cartwright caused problems down the wings.

The Jags couldn’t quite match Milan on the physical side of the game – there was nothing unfair about the way City played – in fact they were excellent – but their players were stronger than the Shields boys. Luke Geddes teased the City defence at times with Truman and Matty doing their best to create opportunities but Newcastle defended well when they had to. Truman set up Ethan Brown and his shot inched passed the post, while other chances were defended well by City.

With the Jags pressing for an equaliser they were caught twice in the last 5 minutes to give Newcastle the points and a 3-0 scoreline.

Overall not a bad performance from the Jaguars and a lesson learned on the physical side against a team who played good football and were strong and fair. Lets see how we get on against them next time.

Man of the Match: Matty Longstaff

NMS Premier League A
North Shields Jaguars v Blyth Town Whites

After a break of six weeks the Jags eventually took to the field for a game of football. This was only due to a last minute switch to Collingwood Playing Fields and the dedication of coaches Brown and Cass in removing several lumps of dog clarty from the pitch beforehand. I feel a letter to the Council brewing.

This was the first game in the Premier League this season and the Jags were facing ex Pumas goalkeeper Andy Thompson who had decided to try his luck with Blyth following a six month spell with the North Shields boys.

The lack of “proper footy” was evident as the Jags struggled to get going with passes going astray and what appeared to be a bit of lethargy (look it up!).  Sam Terrance had to make two fines saves to keep his team in the game as the Whites knocked the ball around confidently and made all the early running. But Sam couldn’t do anything to stop a goal when a misplaced defensive pass put him under pressure and Blyth edged ahead. Into the second quarter and the Jags still laboured and couldn’t quite find their rhythm. The things began to change first Truman Hub, then Luke Geddes brought fine saves from Andy before a great move involving Truman Hub and Matty Longstaff saw Connor Brown finish with a thunderous shot for the equaliser. Blyth still showed their metal with some good passing and continued to push forward but good defending from Lewis Cass and Oliver Baldwin kept the sides level.

The third quarter saw a complete change in the game with the Jags eventually turning on the style with some fantastic passing and movement. Truman made it 2-1 and then 3-1 finishing off a great move involving Matty Longstaff and Matthew Cartwright. Ethan Brown was causing mayhem down the right with a combination of Matthew Cartwright and Connor Brown providing a mirror image on the left. Joseph Connor was keeping things tight at the back – reading the game well, putting in some string tackles and moving out of defence Beckenbuar style. He was n end hand to set up goal number 4 as the Jags went nap and Matty Longstaff slotted home.

The final quarter continued in the same vein with more great football and the Whites seemingly out numbered . Matty banged in goal number 2, Ethan hit a cracker and Luke Geddes hit the goal his excellent play deserved to make it 7. The Whites though didn’t give in and it took a wonderful goal line clearance from Lewis Cass to stop Blyth from scoring again.

In summary a slow start that improved as the game went on ending up with a deserved win, importantly a good enjoyable performance and a reward of an out of date Mars Bar after the match!

Northumberland Mini Soccer League Division B
North Shields Jaguars v Bedlington Barca

Bedlington visited Preston Grange Stadium with a  good defensive record over the season and it certainly showed as the Jags found it hard to breakdown their resolute defence. It was Barca that created the early chances – putting the Jags under pressure and they almost took an early lead.  A free kick given about 20 yards from goal went hurtling for the top corner only for Sam Terrance to superbly touch the ball around the post for a corner. The Jags did play some great football with Matty Longstaff in particular probing and pushing. Olly Baldwin hit a flyer from 20 yards which Matty tried to get on the end of only to see it flash just wide. Into the second quarter and some more fine football from Shields with Barca struggling to contain them – Luke Geddes created a couple of chances and Matty again hit a shot just over the bar. Lots of pressure but no goals -0 and no panicking from the Jaguars (players!).

The third quarter completely changed everything – 5 goals in 12 and half minutes secured the result for the Jags. Firstly captain Connor Brown prodded home for 1-0, the a great move involving Connor Brown and Matthew Cartwright set up Longstaff to smash home for 2-0. The a bit of luck as Lewis Cass swung his corner in and saw the visiting defender unfortunate enough to deflect the ball into his own to take it to 3-0. Matty smashed home another quickly to make it 4, before Joseph “Goal Machine” Connor hit a great strike form out wide to score his second in two games. There could have been more as Olly Baldwin pushed forward and Lewis Cass put in cross after cross.

The final quarter was more even score wise – some more good passing and moving from the Jags saw them create some good chances but Barca never gave in and pushed the Jags hard. Sam Terrance needed to be brave to come and claim a corner against some big attackers, but the Jags defence held firm. Matthew Cartwright, Olly Baldwin and Luke Geddes combined well and set up Ethan Brown who stole in at the back post to wrap up the game at 6-0. Barca still didn’t give up though and again caused difficulties for the home defence – once again Sam Terrance rescuing his team with a good save low down to his left.

Overall a good performance against a strong Bedlington side who will give most teams a good gamE

Man of the Match - Matty Longstaff

Well done lads – held your nerve and confidence well and played football they way it should be.

Cramlington Juniors Blues 3 North Shields Jaguars 5

The Jaguars turned in a good performance as they visited Astley High School to face the Blues. Lewis Cass was turning it on down the right wing and putting some good crosses in. Matty Longstaff hit a long shot that the keeper saved well but he didn’t keep Longstaff out for long. Luke Geddes picked the ball up through the middle and fed the ball out to Lewis Cass on the wing. Lewis beat two defenders and put another quality cross into the middle for Matty who rose majestically to plant his header past the home keeper. Ethan Brown made it two nil as his cross eluded everyone to find the top corner of the net (fair play to young Mister Brown who was happy to admit his “excellent” touch wasn’t actually a shot). Truman Hub turned it on in the second half – a lovely lob striking the post, before some good play with Lewis Cass created a chance for top scorer Geddes which was just wide. Like most teams the Jaguars began to pile forward as they dominated the game, but the Blues weren’t about to roll over and they broke away leaving the Jags stranded up front for netted for 2-1. Into the third quarter and the Blues levelled when again the Shields boys were caught napping. Sam Terrance was forced into making two good saves as the Blues gave it a go, but Olly Baldwin and Joseph Connor were in no mood to let Cramlington take control. Matthew Cartwright performed well again down the left wing and his runs and passing caused havoc for the home defence. Truman quickly put the Jags back in front with a lob from outside the box to take them into the final quarter. The Jags picked up the pace again in the last 15 minutes. Firstly another fantastic team goal saw Lewis and Joseph Connor combine well at the back and feed Luke Geddes, who set up Truman Hub and his cross was turned in by Matty Longstaff. Ethan Brown then hit a cracker that rocked the goal (he promised he meant this one!) as the Jags looked like they were going to go nap. A fluke goal saw the Blues score another to set up a potentially tense finish, but the Jags were in no mood to give up the lead and saw the game out well.

East Youth Division Divisional Cup Round 1
Sunday 13th September
North Shields Jaguars v North Shields Pumas

Second game of the season and a second derby game for the Jaguars. This time the cup and this time, for the first time for both teams, two halves of 25 minutes rather than 4 quarters. There wasn’t much to choose between the teams in the first half. An early goal from the Jaguars saw them edge ahead. Matthew Cartwright taking the ball down the line and pulling back for Matty Longstaff to hit home. Keeper Andy Thompson made a fantastic save from Luke Geddes after Lewis Cass made a great run and cross from the right. The Jags pushed forward but the resolute Pumas held firm and looked good on the counter attack with Leon Snowdon and Austin “Spike” Houghton causing problems for the Jags defence. Andy was using his long kicks to put the Jags under pressure, but three magnificent headers from Olly Baldwin (two of them going straight back to Andy in the Pumas goal!) saw the Jags hold tight. On the third occasion the ice encrusted ball rendered Olly winded for a while and he had to retire to recover.

Into the second half and with Truman Hub probing up front and on the wing the Jags began to put more pressure on. Ethan Brown had a shot well saved from Andy before Luke Geddes latched onto to a Matty Longstaff through ball to make it two-nil. Lewis Cass was rewarded for his great play when some how he lobbed the keeper with expert technique. Spike Houghton forced a great save from Sam Terrance and then Sam had to race out and save bravely at Nathan’s feet. Matty Longstaff and Matthew Cartwright combined well down the left and then Matthew converting a rebound shot. Ethan tapped in from a Matthew Cartwright cross, Truman hit the bar with a fantastic effort and Joseph Connor once again started a number of moves with great tackles and passing from the back. Olly was back on the field with the coaches worried about his confidence, but needn’t have as with his first touch Olly connected with another cringing defensive header to keep the pressing Pumas away. Matthew Cartwright wrapped up the scoring with his right foot.

Connor Brown missed his second game after breaking his hand and he will hopefully be on the mend soon – he is spending his time practising with his right foot!!!

Man of the Match – Olly Baldwin for an inspired, courageous and intelligent display.

NSML Division B
Saturday 12th September
North Shields Cougars v North Shields Jaguars

A local derby to start the season with new boys Cougars lining up against the Jaguars. The scoreline did not truly reflect the game as both teams gave their all. The Jaguars played some fantastic football using all the space on the pitch well. The Cougars were strong and defended well, although didn’t always get the run of the ball. Goals from Matty Longstaff, Luke Geddes, Ethan Brown, Lewis Cass and Matthew Cartwright saw the Jaguars home. But the Jags had to rely on two great saves from keeper Sam Terrance as he denied William Kelly and Nathan Young.

Man of the Match – Luke Geddes with some exceptionally clever play
