NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY - V - WHITLEY BAY BC BLUES UNDER 10’S – LEAGUE 15.5.2008
Score – 0-4
Weather – Sunny
K.O 6.30 Thursday
The final game of the season with a good crowd on the sidelines. All the Galaxy players were available after a few had been missing from Monday’s game.
1st Quarter
We got off to a flying start knocking the ball about confidently and creating problems for the visitors. Josh was getting a lot of joy down the left wing and had two efforts that went close. Bay replied with a shot from the edge of the area that Jake did well to tip over his bar. The rest of the quarter belonged to Galaxy who pressed Bay back with some good football. As has been the case recently we could not get the goal our play deserved. This was confirmed when Josh unleashed a great shot from the edge of the area that was heading for the bottom corner until Bay’s keeper sprang to his left to tip it onto the post
2nd Quarter
The lads were disappointed that they weren’t scoring but I told them the general football was great and eventually it would come. Bay came back into the game in this quarter and were causing us some problems. We were doing ok going forward but had stopped working the other way. This led to Bay taking the lead as a quick run down the wing was centered for a tap in by the forward 0-1. We responded well forcing a few corners one of which was met very well by Dan but ended up coming off the bar. The next goal for the visitors would mean the players would have some harsh words from their coach. In what was similar to the first goal players did not make the effort to get back and were jogging. When the ball eventually got played into the centre they still could have got goal side of their marker. Instead they were the wrong side and they had another tap in 0-2. I thought I had this team knowing that football is played both ways and not just forwards.
3rd Quarter
The lads had to go out and hope bay would gift them two goals the way we had for them. There was an improvement in this quarter with very little between the teams. Kyle was closing down well up front and Craig supported by Louis were trying to get attacks started. Bay were defending well though and extended their lead as a player had half the length of the pitch to run into, which he did. One of the defenders needed to get across sooner to stop the shot which eventually found its way into the net 0-3.
4th Quarter.
The players went out hoping to get something out of the game but in truth it was out of reach. I was pleased with the play and effort and we created chances the best of which fell to Hairo but trickled past the post with the keeper beaten. We gambled a bit in this quarter and when Kyle’s pass was intercepted by Bay they had a two on one which was finished off very well into the top corner.0-4
The difference between the first two quarters probably reflects our season as consistency has been hard to find. We have not had much luck in the last few weeks which has seen us drop down the league. However, overall the players can look back on a decent season and an achievement in itself getting into the second league. The lads have benefited from playing in more competitive games in which only a few goals have decided games either way. It has been my first full season coaching a team which has sometimes been hectic but generally pleasing. They are at this club to play and enjoy football but also to be part of a team and develop as players which hopefully they have. Myself and Steve would like to thank them for their efforts and the support from their parents.

K.O – 6.30 Tuesday

A lovely evening for a game of football, with Galaxy back in league action after a brilliant weekend at the Skegness Football Tournament.

1st Quarter
The lads started in good spirits and were giving as good as they got against strong opposition. The first clear chance came to Josh who was played in by Hairo but saw his effort clear the cross bar. Wallsend came back and forced Jake into two decent saves who was looking more confident than of late. Wallsend opened the scoring as we missed tackles on a man running through the middle of the pitch who then squared for an unmarked player 0-1.
2nd Quarter
The effort was certainly there from my players but we were lacking that little bit of quality to open them up. Jake was having his best game for a long while and was thwarting most Wallsend efforts. A second came for Wallsend as again we did not get a tackle in as a player moved along the byline. He fired the ball across goal and it ended up in the back of the net.0-2. Hairo was trying hard to shake his marker and when he did get a shot away the keeper was equal to it. We did well to keep it at two as Craig made a terrific goal line clearance chasing the ball back and hitting it high off the crossbar and into safety. Defending like that is as good as a goal Craig, well done.
3rd Quarter.
Again we were competing well but when we did get through Wallsend had a very competent keeper. I was hoping we could get to the last quarter at 0-2 to give the players a chance to have a good go in the final quarter. This was not the case as a shot came in that Jake could only parry to his left for a tap in 0-3. He then went on to pull off a great reaction save which drew applause from the crowd.
4th Quarter.
I told the lads that the only difference was that they had took their chances. We then went on to create numerous chances but could not find the goal that would get us back in it. Hairo was trying his utmost but when another effort was tipped over well by the visiting keeper we sensed it wasn’t our day.

We were very pleased with the overall performance and the effort the lads put in. I think the boys deserved a draw but Wallsend did not give us any gifts, whereas the goals we conceded could have been stopped with a bit better defending, its not as if the goals are unstoppable. We do not seem to be carrying much luck but this is a tough league that I can see is helping the lads develop.

Score – 3-4

K.O 11.0.0 Sunday
A damp morning put the pitch was in very good nick which resulted in good conditions for this morning’s game.
1st Quarter
I told the lads that it was about time that we started playing in the first quarter rather than waiting until we went a goal down. It was not heeded and we started sluggish again. Ashington were not playing with an out and out front man, rather using the wings and supporting from midfield. This caused some confusion in our ranks as defenders had time on the ball but were struggling to find passes into midfield. In the end we conceded a soft goal as the left winger cut inside to hit a tame shot that went inside our keeper’s left hand post! 0-1 I was desperate to get the lads in without conceding more as it was not down to formations but the fact the lads were not marking correctly when we did not have the ball, which was resulting in them, getting in behind us.
2nd Quarter
We started the second half brighter and James was starting to get our passing game moving from the centre of midfield. This resulted in an equalizer as James and Josh linked up to send Hairo Shehaj through to finish well in the bottom corner 1-1. We were back in the game but conceded an unlucky second. Ashington broke from our corner and eventually played the ball into the box. James inadvertently stuck out a right foot after running the length of the pitch to wrong foot our keeper 1-2. Ashington’s left winger had been causing problems with his pace but Kyle was marking him quite well in this quarter until he got a ricochet in midfield and sprinted down the wing. He cut the ball back well for an Ashington player to finish it off 1-3. We had played better football in this quarter but our lack of pace at the back was giving me cause for concern and was undoing our good work going forward.
3rd Quarter.
The lads knew we had to tighten up at the back to get anything out of this game and we started the quarter well forcing Ashington back. Some good play by Kyle down the right saw him pick out the advancing Dean Hook who tucked the ball away well 2-3. The ball then broke to Kyle who attempted to hit a shot over the advancing keeper. He jumped up to save but he was at least three yards outside his box and stopped a certain goal. We had to settle for a free kick but Dean Hook got us deservedly back in the game hitting a powerful shot that went in off the cross bar.3-3. We went looking for a winner and got caught (again) at the back. A couple of missed tackles saw an Ashington player play a through ball for his team mate with our defenders no where to be seen. As he advanced in on goal his finish was very good to give Ashington the lead 3-4.
4th Quarter.
After all the goals in the previous quarter we huffed and puffed without creating too many chances. James was introduced to try and give us a bit impetus but Ashington defended well to get their win.
Before the game I spent a few minutes on the shape of the team when defending high up the pitch. This was due to a goal conceded the previous week against Whitley Bay. With this in mind I was disappointed with Ashington’s winning goal that was similar to this. There was nothing wrong with our forward play today but asking us to score 5 to win games is too much. We defended badly today and the lack of pace at the back is certainly an issue. Having said that the whole team did not take up correct positions when we did not have the ball which resulted in sp

K.O 10.30 Sunday
Not the usual report today due to time constraints, sorry folks but The Messiah and beating the Mackems had to come first!
We were looking to build on last weeks good result but went behind to a fluke goal as the Spartak player scooped the ball about twenty yards out. It went high and came down under the cross bar with our keeper thinking it was going over. 0-1. The lads were told they had to up their efforts after a lackluster first quarter, which they did. However we went further behind to a very good goal. We lost the ball on the edge of the box and Bay broke on us, they played a lovely one/two on the half way line and the striker advanced on goal and hit a screamer into the top corner. 0-2. The lads had upped their game but found themselves two goals down.
To summarise the third and fourth quarters we played some fantastic football and created about 10 good chances. A mixture of good goalkeeping, poor finishing and lady luck deserting us kept the Spartak goal intact.
I could not believe we did not get at least a draw from this game but I told the lads I was delighted with the performance (the first quarter being the exception). Trophy winning teams are consistent and at the moment no team in this league has found it with 8 points separating top to bottom.

K.O 11.00 Sunday
We returned to league action after two weeks off although training had been very good in this time. The pitch at Blyth was not the best, with the grass overgrown and the Blyth manager having to mark out a pitch, width ways across a senior pitch.
1st Quarter
A scrappy opening saw both sets of players battling well without any decent football being played. We did manage to create a couple of chances with Hairo shooting over the bar and also putting a header over from Kyle’s corner. We were defending well and the chance came to take the lead as another Kyle corner was handled in the penalty box by a Blyth player. The referee gave the correct decision as the Blyth players hand moved up to meet the ball. Hairo Shehaj stepped up and finished smartly in the bottom corner with the keeper guessing the correct way. 1-0
2nd Quarter
The commitment was great from Galaxy and Blyth for that matter but I wanted us to get the ball down and pass more as I was sure we could open Blyth up. Eventually the penny dropped and James was the first to take note after getting his head up and hitting a lovely cross field pass into Josh Barras’s path. His first touch was great and it set him up to hit a beautiful strike into the bottom left hand corner giving the home keeper no chance.2-0. We were in the ascendancy and Josh had another fine effort but this was matched by the keeper who tipped his shot over the bar. We went looking for a third and got it as patient built up on the right wing resulted in James knocking over a corner. It fell to Hairo Shehaj on his left foot and he made no mistake 3-0.
3rd Quarter.
Blyth threw caution to the wind and pushed two up front which left Craig in a free role on the right. It was difficult to get instructions to the players that Craig should be the free pass but again these lads are developing and learning the game. I was happy with the way we were defending but we needed to make more of our attacking play in this quarter. Blyth then got a goal back that I was not a happy chappy about! We broke down our right from a Blyth corner and advanced up the pitch, for some unknown reason all the players and especially my two defenders decided they would charge forward into the opposition half. Yes you’ve guessed it! Blyth won the ball back, put it up the pitch where their two strikers thought xmas had come early and knocked it in 3-1
4th Quarter.
I warned the players that we had just given Blyth the opportunity they needed to get back into the game and that they would be annoyed with themselves if they let this one slip. The response was great as we pushed Blyth back and created numerous chances. Dean had a great effort come back off the upright and Hairo should have got his hatrick after missing some good chances by his standards. He was rewarded in the end though as Craig picked out a lovely pass from the centre of midfield for Hairo to run onto and finish well 4-1. There was just time for Blyth to nick their second as we struggled to clear the ball after an untidy passage of play. The ball broke through our defenders and again two players were on hand with one of them putting it away.4-2. Next year both Blyth’s goals will be deemed to be offside however my players must have more awareness and communication between them which we will be covering at training lads! (any help with this one Simon aaarrgghh)
Overall a very good team performance considering we were missing Dan and Louis. The lads backed each other up and showed again that when they get it down and play we have players (especially in Hairo’s form) who can punish the opposition. Finally before the game I asked the lads where they would like/thought they could finish in the league. I will not tell you where this was (at the moment) but I told them they had to beat Blyth to get there. First step completed!

K.O 10.30 Sunday
A second game in two days with Galaxy having an early opportunity to put yesterday’s disappointing result behind them.
1st Quarter
I was not sure whether we started slowly or that bay were that good but they dominated the early exchanges. They seemed quicker and the movement and passing was very good. They created a few chances that should have been taken and Jake also pulled off a couple of good saves. We went in level which was a bonus but the lads at least battled even though they were second best in this quarter.
2nd Quarter
Bay continued where they left off and got the lead their play deserved. A bay player cut in from the right wing and somehow managed to win 3 or 4 challenges before squaring the ball for a teammate to finish well 0-1. We started to get a foot hold in the game and started to cause Bay some problems without testing the visiting keeper too much.
3rd Quarter
Bay went further ahead to a dubious goal in this quarter. The ball looked to have gone out and back in play but I was unsighted due to the parents standing on the touch line. The ref played the advantage and with the Galaxy players slow to react a bay player finished it off 0-2. At this age the players are learning all of the time and myself and the parents need to take responsibility for this goal and address this issue in the future. (I’ll start now-Could the parents please keep a couple of feet from the touchline. Thank You). We went pushing for a goal and from our corner the ball broke on the edge of the box. As with a goal yesterday it was communication that let us down as James and Craig left it for each other and a Bay player nipped in to start a counter attack. In the blink of an eye Bay had four players streaming in on our goal and they put it away to make it 0-3
4th Quarter.
I told the lads to keep plugging away and see if they could salvage an unlikely point. They did push on and create some decent chances. You could see the players gaining in confidence and we pulled a goal back when Kyle found Hairo with a long pass. The in form striker bore down on goal and hit a good shot that the keeper did very well to keep out. Unluckily for him Josh Barras was on hand to tuck in the rebound. 1-3.

We did not deserve to win today’s game as bay played the better football and created the better chances. We had a few players below their normal standards and we must learn to play for longer than one or two quarters. With all 10 players available I also think the team changes too frequently and disrupt’s any rhythm or understanding. Is it a coincidence that our better performances and results have come from a settled side? Having said this we must give the lads an equal time on the pitch for the rest of this year at least!

K.O 10.30 Saturday
A quarter final clash with the winners facing North Shields Porto in the Semi’s. We had a full squad to choose from for the first time in a few weeks.
1st Quarter
Galaxy had the first opportunity as Hairo ran clear from the half way line only to hit his shot past the post. We then conceded a terrible goal as Dean placed a pass back to his goal keeper. Jake went to control it with his left foot but only proceeded to play the ball across the face of the goal. A Blyth player had gambled and followed it in and got a tap in 0-1. We ended the quarter with a number of corners that would not fall for a Galaxy player.
2nd Quarter
The players pushed on for the equaliser and Hairo went close from a Josh corner. Another fine corner from Josh saw Hairo miss the ball on the pen spot but it fell to Kyle who was unlucky to see his volley fly over the bar. We were creating chances but generally Blyth were very good at the back with the number 2 having a great game.
3rd Quarter.
We were getting stretched at the back in this quarter and Jake pulled off a couple of good saves with another fired past the post. I made a change at the back to try and tighten things up and we nearly got level as Kyle’s shot hit the post and his follow up some how stayed out, I think hitting the goalkeeper on the line. From another corner Dan tried his luck with a volley which the keeper turned around the post. We had not taken any of our chances and Blyth punished Galaxy for this. The keeper made a long clearance which bounced in between Callum and our keeper. The Blyth forward reacted and lifted the ball over Jake 0-2. Another bad goal, which should have been dealt with and would have been, with some communication between the two players.
4th Quarter.
The players told me they believed they could still get back in the game but I told them the movement had to be better to get around Blyth’s strong back line. After what seemed like our 50th corner, Dean Hook reacted to nudge the ball home to get us back in it 1-2. We were piling the pressure on Blyth but they were standing firm with there keeper looking very accomplished. The goal of the game then followed as Blyth’s MOM number two played a clever ball out under pressure. The centre midfielder then knocked the ball out wide to his winger who hit a great first time ball into the centre of the field. The Blyth forward raced onto it only to see his shot hit the post. Fortunately for them it rolled across the goal for a tap in 1-3. Louis Grant got on the score sheet as he cut in on the box and finished with a well placed shot into the corner to make it 2-3. We eventually ran out of time but to score 4 goals against Blyth’s well drilled defence was asking too much.
A strange game for me as I do not think we played well and dipped below our recent very good standards. However, as I write this report and on reflection it is hard to be too critical of the lads, as they did create plenty of chances and forced numerous corners. As stated we gave away two poor goals which never helps and the forwards did not react quick enough on half chances. The general opinion was that Blyth wanted it a bit more and carried the luck that is needed to win cups. Good luck to Colin and his Blyth team in the next round.

K.O 10.30 Sunday
The second of the weekend games with Galaxy out to beat a Blyth team who recorded a win over us only last week. Craig was still missing and we had to put Dan in goal due to Jake suffering slight concussion in a collision in yesterday’s game.
1st Quarter
Not much to report in the first quarter as both teams cancelled each other out. Dan was looking very accomplished in goal and we were competing well. When we did have the ball, the movement was not the best and I felt if it were, we could open Blyth up.
2nd Quarter
Galaxy certainly got going in this quarter and given the opposition it was probably the best spell of football we have played this season. It was James Kemp who opened the scoring, his close control moving into the box giving him a good chance, which he finished with aplomb into the bottom left hand corner. 1-0. We then won a free kick some 25 yards out and it was Dean Hook who stepped up to hit a powerful shot that dipped under the cross bar 2-0. Kyle Henry got the third as he reacted well in the box from a Josh cross to finish in the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance 3-0. Callum took on board our little chat before the game and started showing the distribution he is capable of to match his natural reading of the game from the back. We were not giving Blyth any time on the ball and the “icing on the cake” came with the next goal. It started with James playing a short pass into Hairo who advanced up field. He played a lovely one/two with Kyle with the weight of pass perfect to square the ball across goal. Josh Barras got his reward and arrived at the back post for a tap in.4-0 The Blyth parents were charitable with their “what a fantastic goal” comments aided by “shrieks of delight” from James Kemp’s traveling fans! on either side of me. As Steve pointed out after the game, although we had the wind at our backs the goals had come from playing some good stuff on the deck which was very pleasing. Having said that the fifth goal was certainly route one. Dan Crow launched a kick down field that bounced in the penalty box and looped over the head of the visiting keeper.5-0. Blyth were shell shocked and although we didn’t want the whistle to blow, I am sure my opposite number was of a different opinion.
3rd Quarter.
Blyth players came out in determined mood in this quarter but we were soaking up pressure well and looking to counter attack. James nearly did this as his shot just went wide. We then began to get a bit ragged and started losing the team shape. This resulted in a goal for Blyth as they then caught us with a quick counter attack. The Blyth player reached the byline and did very well to clip the ball across into the six yard box. Dan tried to get back across his goal but the Blyth forward had a free header which he duly put away 5-1. Dan looked gutted as I am sure he wanted to keep a clean sheet after a little wager with his Dad.
4th Quarter.
We saw the game out in this quarter and could easily have added to our total with a few good chances. It was never likely to be costly given the advantage but the work rate was still very good with James epitomising this with his tracking back and harrying.
I told the players before hand, that we had goals in the team but we had to stop conceding silly goals, which meant we had to score 3 or 4 to win a game. The brilliant team display in that 2nd quarter showed what this team is capable of and should be the benchmark for the rest of the season. A very pleasing weekend lads. Well Done.

NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY-v-CRAMLINGTON BLUES – UNDER 10’S – LEAGUE – 15.03.2008
Score – 3-2
Weather – Overcast (perfect conditions)
K.O 1pm Saturday
The first of two games this weekend as this game was brought forward from next weekend at the request of Cramlington. The pitch and conditions were perfect for a game of footy. We were missing Dean and Craig today due to prior commitments but a thank you to Dan’s parents who rushed to get him to this match.
1st Quarter
Galaxy got off to a bad start as a cross came in that Dan attempted to clear but it sliced off his foot and nestled into the back of the net 0-1. The response from Galaxy was good as they pushed Cramlington back and got their reward as Hairo played a square pass to Kyle Henry on the edge of the box. He took his shot early with his right foot and found the bottom corner with a neat finish. 1-1. We nearly took the lead as another fine corner from Louis saw Hairo head the ball down only to see the keeper save his effort. It bounced down just on the line as a Cramlington player cleared.
2nd Quarter
Galaxy started where they left off and we looked dangerous when going forward. We were also nice and solid at the back with a big improvement from the following week. James was unlucky as he dribbled his way into the box only to find his shot fly past the far post. He got his reward a minute later as Louis played a clever ball down the channel for Hairo to chase; he got the better of his marker but had the presence of mind to play the ball across the face of goal to give James Kemp a tap in 2-1.
3rd Quarter.
Cramlington increased the pressure in this quarter in search of the equalizer. They pushed another forward up which should have given our midfield more space; however we were second to most balls and the pressure eventually gave Cramlington an equalizer. It came from a corner which was well delivered to the back post but it was not dealt with and the Cramlington player had a free header. 2-2
4th Quarter.
It was game on and the next goal would probably win it. It was end to end but we got the breakthrough as Hairo Shehaj cut inside and hit a fine left foot shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Again Cramlington pressed but Josh and Callum were defending well with Kyle doing a good protecting role in front of them. Our keeper Jake then went down after a collision and after a quick reshuffle Dan went in nets with James coming back onto the field. We saw the game out to record a good win
Plenty of good things to take from the game and hopefully the lads will pick up more points tomorrow.

K.O 10.30 Sunday
The lads would be fresh and fit (or so I thought) for today’s game after the postponement of the previous weeks game due to high winds.
1st Quarter
Galaxy players started well and were getting the ball down and playing some good stuff. An early breakthrough came as a centre by Hairo was sliced into the bottom corner by a Blyth player.1-0. A lucky goal for Galaxy which should have been two as Hairo raced away with the keeper to beat, he got good contact on the shot but the keeper got his angles right and made a fine save. Blyth were still a threat and got back on level terms with a goal that was not great from Galaxy’s point of view. We try to encourage the defenders to play from the back, as they will do this more next year on an 11-a-side pitch. Josh did this and played a ball down the wing. Possession was lost too easily though and a Blyth player advanced into the box and finished well. He had ran from the half way line without a tackle coming in!! 1-1. Just before the quarter ended Blyth got a free kick 5 yards out from our box. I was right behind the shot that was heading for the right hand bottom corner. There were two Galaxy players who could have blocked with their right foot as it came in, for some reason they decided to watch it as it caught Jake unawares and put Blyth 2-1 up.
2nd Quarter
Galaxy were told that they had to defend better and to try and not concede soft goals like the previous two as once again it would take three goals to win this game. In fairness to them they did tighten up and this gave the platform for them to add sustained pressure on Blyth without really testing their keeper. Galaxy were then denied a penalty as a Blyth player jumped up with both hands in the air, as if to tip a shot over the bar (He wasn’t the keeper). It brushed his finger tips but I was amazed and disappointed when the referee decided to play on!
3rd Quarter
Galaxy were not out of the game and were reminded that one goal would put them back in it. We were keeping a good shape but I was becoming more concerned with our fitness on the big pitch. Blyth had one or two quick strong players in positions that were hurting us when counter attacking. Just as I thought we could have a real go in the last quarter Dean made a rash challenge in the box to concede a penalty and nearly put the Blyth player out onto the touchline. Up stepped a Blyth player who’s shot hit the top right of the bar, we did not get the luck this time as the shot came back down into the middle of the goal for a tap in 3-1.
4th Quarter.
It was a bit harsh on Galaxy but for all our possession I do not recall their keeper making too many saves. The players went out and had real go in the final quarter. Firstly Hairo saw his shot deflected past the post, Louis had an effort that just cleared the bar and Kyle had two efforts in quick succession that were blocked. It was all a bit too late in the day and it was clear to see it wasn’t to be as Hairo did well to run clear of the last defender only to see his shot trickle past the post with the keeper beaten.
I mentioned to one of the parents before the game that we always seem to struggle on a big pitch and today was no exception. Although the effort and football was again pleasing at times, we were found out fitness wise, which is a difficult one for coaches\managers. It is a fine balancing act with lads this age and you can’t push them as much as you could with say a 13 or 14 year old but it may get a bit tougher in training lads! I think a draw would have been a fair reflection of the game but we had two or three players below par. However we have a quick chance to “even the score” as we play Blyth at home next week.

K.O 11.30 Sunday
A fairly late kick off for Galaxy and a tough game was expected although we went into this game on the back of some good form.
1st Quarter
We asked the players if they could continue where they left off last week and on the evidence of the first few minutes it did not seem likely. Bay started much the brighter and were first to the ball in all areas of the pitch. They deservedly took the lead when we got caught high up the pitch and missed a couple of tackles. A quick ball out wide saw the player out pace our last defender and get a shot at goal. Jake got a block on the shot but the ball rolled across the front of the goal for a tap in 0-1
2nd Quarter
The players knew they had to up the tempo right across the pitch and generally the defending was ok in this quarter. Bay were much stronger against our attacking players and I was disappointed with the hold up play and movement from our attacking players. Again it was bay who pinned us back in our half and we were lucky to still be in the game.
3rd Quarter
If Galaxy were to get back in the game it did not start well as Bay increased their lead. More good play down their left side saw a shot come in that Jake did well to parry to the side. However, we fell asleep for the second ball and the bay player was first to react and finish smartly from a tight angle. 0-2
4th Quarter.
I was still waiting for Galaxy to get going and with this being the fourth quarter it was obvious we were struggling today. In fairness to the players they kept on going and although two down at least refused to give bay further goals.
“You are only as good as your last game” – Today Galaxy just did not get going with none of the players in my view playing to anyway near their capabilities. Bay should have won this game by a bigger margin and were good value for the win. I would hope that this was just an off day and the players will come back next week with a lot more enthusiasm for a game of football. Here’s hoping!

K.O 10.0 Sunday
A very cold night put this game in doubt with a hard pitch expected. Both Managers decided it was playable and by the time the game kicked off the sun was working away to loosen the top surface. Credit to John Spence school who have this pitch very flat and in good nick. The only absentee was Louis who is still recovering from his Chicken Pox- Hope your back soon!
1st Quarter
Galaxy started this game very well and immediately put Ashington on the back foot. James was using his pace to good effect down the right wing and Dan & Callum were snuffing out any Ashington attacks. The first chance came as Hairo played a one two with Kyle. Hairo got his shot away but found the side netting. Great link up play down the left saw Josh whip a fantastic ball over from the byline to the back post. Kyle had lost his marker but could not get a good contact on his header and glanced it wide. The movement from Kyle, Hairo and James up front was causing Ashington’s two big central defenders problems and Hairo nearly got an opener with a snap shot that found the side netting. The quarter ended 0-0 but we were very pleased with our opening.
2nd Quarter
Galaxy continued where they left off pushing Ashington back. The away team were still trying to play the ball out, to their credit but Galaxy were tenacious in their tackles. The opener came as Dan fed Hairo Shehaj who beat his marker and then won a block tackle that left him in on goal. A good shot hard and low saw the visiting keeper get a hand to it but unable to keep it out 1-0. Dean, Craig and Callum were very solid and in general the team kept a great shape that gave our keeper Jake very little to do.
3rd Quarter.
After two very good quarters from the home team, Ashington came back into the game but it was difficult to tell if Ashington had “stepped it up” or whether we had “took our foot of the gas”. Either way, when the opposition has a spell in the game you just have to keep solid. That is what pleased me the most today and players covered each other and got tackles in even though the passing was becoming a bit ragged. This platform gave Hairo Shehaj the opportunity to increase his teams lead and get his second. There was still a lot to do as Hairo picked up the ball on the edge of the box but a touch past the defender and a first time shot across the keeper went in off the post. A very good strike to make it 2-0 with Ashington understandably deflated. We almost added a third before the whistle blew as Kyle got on the end of a bouncing ball off our corner but his shot hit the post.
4th Quarter.
Galaxy players were encouraged to look for that third goal but to keep defending well and not let Ahington back in the game. They did just that as Ashington did force a few corners but our organization was good and we snuffed out any threat. The best chance of the quarter did fall to Ashington as a quick snap shot came in from the edge of the box but Jake was alert to the danger and got down well to palm it around the post.
As previously mentioned Steve and I were delighted with the player’s attitude in this game. They all went onto the pitch with the determination that they were going to win the game or at the least not to get beat. Even though we are not the biggest team in the league, the players are starting to add a bit of aggression to their game and not be bullied off the ball as was the case on occasions last year. A very pleasing result and performance. Well done lads.

K.O 9.30 Sunday
Galaxy were down to the bare bones today as Louis, Dean and James were all unavailable. The seven remaining players turned up a bit bleary eyed (as were the parents) for the early kick off.
1st Quarter
The pitch was in good condition and both teams started a bit tentatively. Craig and Josh were defending well aided by Callum in the midfield role. The only thing lacking from Galaxy was a bit more movement off the ball when in possession of it. A couple of half chances came in this half with Kyle and Hairo linking up well without finding the end product.
2nd Quarter
Spartak were giving Galaxy room to play in and gradually we pushed them deeper but they were defending quite well. Dan and Callum were snuffing out any Spartak threat as Galaxy forced a few corners that did not come to anything. The best chance of this half resulted in a break away from our corner by Spartak. The ball was fed down the line and with Galaxy struggling to get back, a ball was played into the middle for an unmarked player. It looked a certain goal but Jake got down brilliantly at his bottom post to turn the ball away.
3rd Quarter
Galaxy were playing well without the finishing touches to their moves. That changed in this quarter with a route one long ball from our keeper. The ball bounced on the half way line as Kyle Henry went to control it, luckily for him he missed it but was alert to turn and chase it quickly as it bounced over the Spartak defenders head. Kyle bore down on goal and coolly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper with a neat finish 1-0. Spartak were struggling to live with Galaxy in this quarter as some good chances were created without finishing them off. This nearly cost Galaxy as a Spartak player hit a great shot from 20+ yards, it was heading for the top corner until Jake pulled off his second top class save to keep us in front. Jake’s shot stopping has been excellent lately and if he can start commanding the box and communicating/organizing his defenders a bit more he hopefully turn into a fine goalkeeper.
4th Quarter.
Galaxy were congratulated with the way they were approaching the game and not to let Spartak back in the game with one of the soft goals we have conceded lately. They did precisely this defending very well from the font and picking off Spartak when the chances arose. The players were tiring as we did not have any subs to freshen things up but Craig epitomizes the spirit the lads showed with workrate and covering which he has undoubtlry added to his game. The reward for this hard work came with a second goal from Dan Crow. Spartak could only clear our corner to the edge of the box were Dan took one touch and finished very well with a right foot shot down into the bottom corner 2-0.
All wins are pleasing but the manner in which the players achieved this result showed a new side to our game. Players worked much harder for their teammates and they got their reward even though a lot of them were tiring

K.O 10.30 Sunday
Galaxy returned to league action after the previous week’s cup success. We had all players available although Dean was still trying to shake off his cold.
1st Quarter
Blyth were first to show creating a few corners that were defended well. Hairo then broke away from his marker but dragged his shot wide of the post. Not much else to report in this quarter as both teams competed well and cancelled each other out
2nd Quarter
The game came to life in this quarter but it was Blyth asking the questions. They took the lead as three Galaxy players decided to close down one advancing Blyth player. This left a man unmarked in the box and when he was found by his team mate he swept the ball home 0-1. Galaxy were letting a big Blyth side outmuscle them and needed to do more to prevent them from playing. We were defending reasonably well but our forward players were struggling to get any attacks going.
3rd Quarter.
A few words of advice saw Galaxy step it up in this quarter with plenty of effort but Blyth’s defence held firm. They got a second slightly against the run of play from a lovely strike. Blyth’s left winger cut in on his right foot and hit a shot into the top right hand corner giving Jake no chance. We have conceded a few wonder goals in recent weeks but you have just got to take goals like this on the chin! 0-2. Galaxy did not let their heads drop and deservedly got back in the game through Dan Crow. It was Hairo who cut in and let fly with a shot that the keeper could only parry across goal, Dan nipped in to claim it 1-2. The momentum was with Galaxy now and they nearly got back on level terms through Craig whose shot squirmed under the keeper’s body and just around the post. Jake was then called into action and reacted well to tip a shot around the post.
4th Quarter.
Galaxy knew they were back in the game but for all their effort could not get the leveler. This was due to some fine Blyth defending, which has been the main deference that I can see in this new division. The one good chance of the quarter fell to Kyle who latched onto a through ball and advanced up the pitch. He then took a shot way too early that never looked like troubling the keeper.
We defended quite well today but we needed three goals to win this game. I would normally fancy our chances but our forward play was not great today with a few players out of sorts. Having said that, it was pleasing to see Craig Johnson get his teeth into the game and play with the ability that is in his locker. Keep it up Craig!

K.O 12.00 Saturday
A change for the Galaxy players with a Saturday second round cup game arranged as we had a free weekend in the league. With their home ground unavailable, due to a waterlogged pitch, they agreed to play the tie at John Spence.
1st Quarter
Galaxy started with the strong wind in their backs and immediately put Wansbeck under pressure. Craig was the first to try his luck but his shot went past the post. Hairo was next but the keeper did well to save his shot. The opener came when James Kemp jinked his way along the byline from a throw and hit a fine left foot shot into the top corner 1-0. Galaxy were in commanding form and a second goal arrived via the right boot of Hairo Shehaj. His first effort from the edge of the box was blocked but there was no mistake with his second as he curled a beauty into the top right hand corner 2-0.
2nd Quarter
The wind was dropping but the advantage was with Wansbeck as they looked to force Galaxy back. To their credit Galaxy were keeping the ball on the ground and looking dangerous. Hairo fired a shot over the bar and then the keeper did well to turn Kyle’s effort around the post. The half ended with Wansbeck getting a goal back. They broke down the right but Galaxy players got back well and into good defensive positions. The problem was when the ball did drop on the penalty spot the only Wansbeck player there was left completely unmarked and he did well to hook the ball into the top corner. A little bit of communication between the keeper and defenders was all that was needed to avoid the goal! 2-1.
3rd Quarter.
Galaxy got straight at Wansbeck and got an instant reward as a scramble in the box found Kyle Henry to hook it goal-wards. As it traveled over the line a Wansebeck player tried to clear but it was another goal 3-1. The game was all but wrapped up as Josh Barrass got a second chance in the box and he poked this one home with the keeper unsighted. 4-1. Galaxy were playing some great football and had the confidence to play out from the back and switch play well. This led to the best goal of the game as Dan and Callum worked the ball across the back line to find Louis on the left wing. A forward run into the channel from Josh and when he collected the ball hit a great cross into the back post area. Kyle Henry arrived with a diving header to cap a marvelous move. Kyle had a little punch in the air 5-1. – (There’s something about diving headers that make’s the goal extra special eh son!)
4th Quarter.
The players were congratulated on their play and to keep it up. A sixth arrived as a demoralised Wansbeck defence let Hairo Shehaj with all the time and space to shoot with his left foot into the left hand corner.6-1. To their credit Wansbeck did get another goal from a throw in as Galaxy defenders got dragged towards the ball and thrower. It went sailing over their heads and the Wansbeck forward finished smartly giving Jake no chance 6-2. It was another goal that should have been avoided. Some players do not seem to be learning that some throws from these 10 year old players can travel a long distance and we have conceded a few like this over the season, which is disappointing. The game ended on another positive note as Dan Crow got his rewards for a cracking performance. He had a couple of efforts blocked before hitting his third hard and low into the side netting 7-2.
Wansbeck can have no complaints with the result, although they did try to give Galaxy a game. The trick for our players is to turn this performance into the league, against stronger opposition. They are getting more confidence to pass the ball under pressure and the movement today was excellent. Well done to Dean who turned up to support his teammates today, even though he was under the weather and wasn’t up to playing? Again a good attitude which shows the squad has built up a bit of camaraderie in the short time they have been together.

K.O 9.30 Sunday
Although King Kevin’s return yesterday didn’t produce the trademark flowing football, it showed up today as the two teams served up a cracking game.
1st Quarter
The pitch was heavy due to the previous nights rain and Jake our keeper was covered in mud just in the warm up. Again it was clear to see that both teams were well matched with James tracking back well on the right wing. Kyle twice found himself advancing on the keeper, the first time he saved down at his feet and the second time grabbed the ball as Kyle attempted to lift it over him. As the quarter ended Josh and Callum made great last ditch sliding tackles to prevent Whitley Bay getting shots at goal.
2nd Quarter
Galaxy were told to keep playing in the same manner but to use the wings a bit more as the centre of the bitch was cutting up badly. Galaxy should have took the lead as a Hairo cross found Craig arriving at the back post, he had an open goal but the ball went past the post making good contact as he stretched to meet the ball. The goal did come and it was a fine move with Craig feeding Louis down the right wing who in turn found Hairo. He delivered to the front post as James Kemp nipped in to tuck the ball in the bottom corner 0-1. A second goal nearly came as Dean let fly from the edge of the box but it went past the post. Whitley Bay also created a few chances in this half but these were collected comfortably by Jake.
3rd Quarter
We were not expecting what happened in this quarter as Galaxy literally fell apart. The equalizer arrived as Jake could only palm a shot to his left but it fell for a player at the back post to finish 1-1. Jake then pulled off a great save as he pushed a shot around the post that was heading for the top corner. Whitley Bay were playing very well and pushing men forward. Galaxy got undisciplined as they went chasing the ball and leaving team mates to mark two and sometimes three men. They were punished as Craig made a weak tackle and his man skipped away to give Jake no chance 2-1. A break from Whitley Bay’s left back spot saw Hairo miss the first challenge, Kyle the second as they advanced on the box. Another neat finish as no further challenges came in 3-1 (Steve had warned the players to be tight down their left but they did not heed his warning). We just wanted to get the lads in at this point but there was time for a fourth as Dean played a clearance straight to the edge of the box to give a Bay player another opportunity 4-1.
4th Quarter.
It’s not often I have got to remind the lads of what level we expect (even at 10) from them. There were too many heads dropping and giving up after missing a tackle or misplacing a pass. Myself and Steve were very pleased with the response as we battered Whitley Bay like they had done to us in the previous quarter. It started as another good corner from Louis saw Callum Brown arrive on the pen spot to finish smartly, back in it 4-2. A scramble in the box found Hairo Shehaj with a bit of room, he hit a quick first time left foot shot that found the back of the net 4-3. Whitley Bay were stunned but managed to get a break away with a shot coming in that Jake did brilliantly to tip around the post. We kept attacking looking for the equalizer with Bay making changes to try and stop the bombardment. Josh Barrass then won a tackle in the left back spot and headed down the line. The bay players could not catch him as he advanced on the keeper. A delicate chip nestled in the far corner to send the Galaxy crowd into a frenzy. 4-4 and a contender for goal of the season! As the game looked to be heading for a draw a Bay player picked up the ball on the right and hit a great strike into the top corner giving Jake no chance 5-4. A cruel end for Galaxy but the football played, mixed with greater effort, was, appreciated at the end by the spectators, with a big round of applause.

K.O 10.30 Sunday
Galaxy returned to league action in division two after last years results. The players would find the rest of the season very competitive due to them now playing similar opposition. So we were expecting a close game and that is how it turned out.
1st Quarter
Both teams started well with Josh looking very commanding at the back assisted by Craig. It was a frantic pace with players trying to get passing moves going but being thwarted by good challenges and interceptions. Louis had our first attempt at goal but dragged his shot wide after Hairo’s left footed shot had been palmed away by the keeper. The next best chance of this quarter fell to Dean who turned his man from a throw in and had a shot that was heading for the top corner but the Cramlington keeper made a great save to tip over the bar.
2nd Quarter
Cramlington piled on the pressure in this half, with some good passing moves in midfield. They really should have taken the lead but a mixture of poor finishing and last ditch defending kept it level. It was pleasing to see the Galaxy players show a bit stubborn resistance when they had to. Players were covering each other and when they did get through Jake was having a fine game in our goal.
3rd Quarter.
The game really got stretched in this quarter with both teams counter attacking at a fast pace. A couple of our players looked like they were struggling with knocks but assured us they were okay. However it was Cramlington that took the lead as they found themselves 2 v 1 on our goal. A square pass found a player in the box that he put away well giving Jake no chance 0-1. We forced a number of corners trying to get back in the game but although the deliveries were good the ball did not fall kindly for us. Cramlington almost added a second as a shot across goal from the edge of the area crashed against the post.
4th Quarter.
I was worried that Cramlington were going to overrun us as they seemed fitter and were getting on top in the previous quarter. The players were reminded that they were still in the game but they would have to pick up the tempo. What followed was very pleasing as they did just that. Hairo Shehaj got us back in the game straight from the kick off hitting a speculative shot hard and low. I think the Cramlington keeper misjudged the power of the shot and by the time he reacted the ball was in the back of the net.1-1. Galaxy’s tails were up and they kept the pressure on looking for the winner. We were not to be denied as another excellent corner from Louis saw Kyle Henry gambling on the back post to side foot home 2-1. Cramlington were trying to get attacks going but we had them pinned in their own half. Another fine passing move almost made it three as Craig squared a ball for Louis to arrive and hit a first time shot. He was only five yards out but the keeper pulled off a fabulous save to deny him, diving to his right.
A great game to watch with chances aplenty for the spectators. This game could have gone either way but I was delighted that the players got their reward for finding that bit extra in the last quarter. A final word for Callum and his family who left Carlisle early this morning to get to this game. A great attitude appreciated by myself and Steve.

K.O 10.30 Sunday
A welcome return to action, after a two week break, over the festive period. With our home ground unavailable we forfeited home advantage and agreed to play the tie at Guidepost.
1st Quarter
From the start it was clear that the big pitch was going to be a test for both players fitness after the recent break. It was Galaxy however that were looking the more likely to open the scoring but Guidepost were defending well. James was doing some good work down the right wing to compliment Dan’s aggressive ball winning in the middle of the park
2nd Quarter
The second quarter went much the same as the first but there was evidence that Galaxy were shaking off the rustiness and putting some good passing moves together. Defenders Dean, Dan, Josh and Callum were always in control but were encouraged to support the attacking players and make use of the large pitch. Kyle, Hairo and James were working hard when closing down and a good chance fell to Kyle after Hairo had picked him out. He elected to take it early as a defender closed him down but his shot went wide. The quarter closed with Galaxy continuing to press without troubling the Guidepost keeper too much.
3rd Quarter.
We could see the players were blowing a bit (as to be expected) and it was again instructed that they should “Let the ball do the work”. After two quarters the penny seemed to have dropped as they started the third quarter very well. Quick decisive passing and movement was causing Guidepost more and more problems. This led to a through ball from Kyle for Hairo to run onto. He advanced on goal but was thwarted, when about to shoot, by another fine recovery from the Guidepost number 11. A second chance came to Hairo as he intercepted a defenders ball across the box and hit a first time shot. With the keeper out of his goal the ball rolled agonisingly past the post. Some great football in midfield then found Josh with an opportunity on the edge of the box, his first touch took him wide and when he centered two chances were blocked by Guidepost. The breakthrough came as Kyle again found Hairo Shehaj who made no mistake this time, shrugging of a challenge to finish well with his left foot into the bottom corner. 1-0
4th Quarter.
Guidepost pushed three up front in an attempt to get back in the game but Dan and Josh were breaking up most moves. This was obviously leaving spaces for Galaxy to exploit. Numerous corners were forced by Galaxy in this quarter but no clear opportunities arose apart from a Callum effort that went past the post. Kyle then found himself free on the halfway line and set off on goal. Again excellent work by the Guidepost number 11 saw his determination rewarded as he cleared for a corner. There was not long left and Jake, who had been well protected all game, gave us a fright as the ball squirmed under his grasp but was held on at the second attempt.
A win to see in the New Year and in the hat for the next round. No matter the age group, missing a couple of weeks of football, effects the tempo of your game but Galaxy deserved this win. They did most of the pressing and created more opportunities at goal. Guidepost were content to sit back and hopefully catch us on the break, which may have paid off on another day.

K.O 11.00 Sunday

A second game in two days for Galaxy with the players confident of getting another win. If anything the weather was actually colder today although the pitch was in good condition.

1st Quarter
The game started at a fast pace with Galaxy having most of the possession and starting much better than yesterday. It was not long before the opener came with Craig driving through midfield and finding a pass for Hairo Shehaj to run onto. His first time shot gave the keeper no chance as the ball nestled in the back of the net.0-1. Galaxy were playing some brilliant stuff while Dean and Callum were solid at the back. A second goal came, which was all of his own doing. Hairo Shehaj let a through ball run across his body, which sold the defender a dummy he advanced in on goal and hit a left foot shot with power. A very good goal! 0-2

2nd Quarter
Very little to say at the team talk, just to keep it going. They did just that as a lovely passage of play with Kyle finding Hairo who shifted it on to Dean. Dean then could of shot but intelligently moved it on again for Louis Grant to arrive with a neat finish. 0-3. Dan and Josh were defending very well which gave Galaxy’s forward players the opportunity to run at the Whitley Bay back line. Constant pressure saw a number of corners forced and at last (after numerous coaching drills) a perfect corner was buried in the back of the net by Dean Hook 0-4.

3rd Quarter.
Whitley Bay stuck to their task and defended better in this quarter. They could not get through to our keeper Jake when attacking as we tackled much better than in previous weeks. Numerous attacks went unpunished and Kyle and Louis will feel they should have added to their goals. A fourth did come as James showed great wing play by moving past two challenges getting his head up and picking out Kyle Henry in the middle. No mistake this time as he slotted the ball in 0-5.

4th Quarter.
This quarter mirrored the previous as Galaxy should have added quite a few more goals to their tally. A mixture of good goalkeeping and good fortune meant Galaxy finished the game with six as Dan played a clever ball in between two players. Hairo Shehaj latched onto it and passed the ball into the net to complete a fine hatrick. 0-6. Whitley Bay tried to push more men forward but Callum’s reading of the game was excellent at the back and following yesterday, showed the way on “when to close down and when to drop off”.

A fine performance and result from Galaxy in their last league game. It was a joy to watch at times with parents and coaches delighted with the football produced in the last couple of games. Overall it has been a satisfying half season and but for slip ups against “lesser opposition” and a bit more luck we could have been looking at a third place finish as opposed to top six. The main thing is that the players are enjoying their football but we have certainly seen development of the player’s abilities in 2007. Keep it up lads and I am sure well go from Strength to Strength in 2008.

Well Done & Happy Christmas to you all from Myself and Steve (Not too many selection boxes mind!)

We just managed to get this played, following last weeks postponement due to a waterlogged pitch. A very cold day but the sun was out and with a midday KO the pitch was certainly playable at the changed venue of Collingwood playing fields.

1st Quarter
The players seemed a bit lethargic in the warm up and they started the game in the same fashion. They were trying hard but were playing as individuals rather than a team and were not supporting the man with the ball. Having said this it was Galaxy that were pushing Tynemouth back but as previous weeks, the cutting edge in the last third was missing. We did force a few corners but Tynemouth defended well and limited us to a few long range efforts that lacked power.

2nd Quarter
Again Galaxy were looking the more likely to score with Craig playing well in centre midfield supported by James and Dan on the flanks. Tynemouth were putting up a stubborn resistance and looking to catch Galaxy on the break. It has been a bit of an Achilles heel this season when camping in the oppositions half we have conceded break away goals. It was to prove the same again as a Galaxy defender went for a tackle wide right on the half way line, the Tynemouth player skipped past this and suddenly had 2 on 1. A fine pass into the middle cut out the remaining defender and the Tynemouth player passed the ball into the net. 1-0.

3rd Quarter.
Although trailing the boys were still confident and started this quarter very well. Hairo, Kyle and Louis were putting some fine passing movements together with efforts whistling past the posts. I could not believe the next passage of play as Tynemouth went two up. Four or Five tackles went in from Galaxy players in the midfield area that were all won by Tynemouth. The ball broke on the wing for a yellow who again found a good pass to pick out an arriving player on the edge of the box. He tucked it easily past Jake who had had very little to do accept pick the ball out of the net. Twice ! 2-0. We then received a bit of luck as a Tynemouth player scored an OG when attempting to clear 2-1. We were back in it quickly and added a second as James jinked his way into the box and found Kyle who finished it off 2-2. The players at last started to finish off the promising moves as Hairo got on the score sheet after a rebound off a Tynemouth player fell at his feet. 3-2.

4th Quarter.
The player’s confidence was up and they went out and finished the game off. Some fine passing through midfield with Callum getting more involved saw Kyle beat a couple of challenges before slotting in for his second 4-2. Kyle’s work rate was excellent and he was causing Tynemouth’s tiring backline problems forcing numerous corners. Dan sent an effort way over the bar after the ball broke to him from a corner on the edge of the box. However, in an identical situation he caught the second one sweet and with a slight deflection the ball sailed over the keepers head 5-2. With time ticking away a Galaxy player went down in the box and a penalty was given. I did not see the foul, so do not know if it was a correct decision (Wenger anyone!) but Josh stepped up to hit a fine strike giving the keeper no chance.

Overall Galaxy were the better team and deserved the three points. Tynemouth defended well in the first two quarters and would have been surprised to be two up. Credit to the Galaxy players who did not let their heads drop and at last got the goals that their general played deserved.

There’s a saying “that you make your own luck in football”

1st Quarter
A fantastic start from Galaxy, with all players passing the ball with confidence all around the pitch. It was a joy to watch as defenders (Craig and Josh) built from the back. The first chance fell to Kyle who outpaced the defender and got a shot away from the edge of the box that the keeper did well to push away for a corner. More fluent passing through Dean and Louis found Hairo bearing down on goal. This time the effort flew past the post with the keeper beaten. Ashington then responded as a ball fell on the edge of the box. An Ashington player was first to react who hit a dipping half volley that Jake did very well to tip over the bar. Back came Galaxy as Hairo made a great run down the wing and crossed into the area. The ball was slightly behind Kyle who attempted an overhead kick but this effort sailed over the bar. The quarter ended all square and all that was missing was the goals that Galaxy’s display deserved.

2nd Quarter
The players were told to keep up the good work and the goals would come. Ashington came more into the game in this quarter but Dan and Josh were comfortable at the back and repelled most attacks. James and Louis were working hard down the wings and Callum was closing down well in the middle of the park. Galaxy forced a few corners that were again hit too short and not put in the danger area. Kyle had a great chance to open the scoring as he flicked the ball over the defenders head and advanced on goal. He opted to take the shot early but did not connect properly and the keeper saved with his feet. Jake was then called into action as he turned a shot around the post to continue his good start to the game.

3rd Quarter.
No goals scored but it was a cracking game that both sets of parents were enjoying. Galaxy continued to press but could not find the breakthrough that their play deserved. The best chance in this quarter fell to James who connected well from inside the box but saw his shot fly past the post. Galaxy then undid all the great work with a poor goal conceded. The ball was given away on the edge of the box and Ashington worked the ball into the box. It seemed to be in slow motion as we waited for the tackle to come in, it did not and the Ashington played drilled home from 5 yards giving Jake no chance. 1-0.

4th Quarter.
I could not believe we were losing in this game but it was a bad goal to give away and it seemed to lift Ashington. They played their best football in this quarter and caught Galaxy on the break as we pushed for an equaliser. The second goal knocked the stuffing out of Galaxy as Jake came out to clear on the edge of the box. It ricocheted off an Ashington player and left him with tap in. A lucky goal but they all count 2-0. A third arrived as Ashington’s left winger was causing havoc and he scored the goal of the game as he lashed in from the edge of the area 3-0. I was a bit dumb struck at this stage and it got worse as Josh attempted to head clear, the ball went backwards, over Jake’s head who had come out to collect, to leave an Ashington player with another tap in. 4-0

Myself and Steve are in this to develop these kids and get them enjoying a game of football. There was no doubt that at times today both of the above materialised and you’re standing there seeing that they are becoming better players and a good team. But football can be cruel at any level and it is goals that win games. We were very unlucky today and certainly did not deserve this score line. You make your own luck eh!

The match report normally consists of a breakdown of the four quarters to the game. However, each quarter was so evenly matched and alike a breakdown of the highlights should suffice.

It was Galaxy who were playing in the changed white tops as the away team. Both teams looked strong defensively which was pleasing to see from Galaxy’s point of view following the previous weeks match. Josh was competing well in the centre of midfield and Hairo was finding it difficult to leave his markers and get on one of his forward runs, with Lisbon competing well. Dean, Callum and Dan were not giving an inch and when Lisbon did force a couple of corners, they were dealt with comfortably. On the occasions when Galaxy were breaking it was the final ball that was missing after Louis and Kyle broke from midfield. It was James who had the best chance, which he created for himself, jinking into the box and firing a shot past the post. A couple of minutes later and Galaxy conceded a goal that was to prove a winner. A free kick was played to the edge of the Galaxy box and was not cleared. It fell to the foot of a Lisbon player who turned sharply in the box and without a tackle coming in, hit the ball between Jake’s legs.

So the game ended 1-0 that could easily have been reversed in Galaxy’s favour. Manager/coaches agreed it had been a close game with one goal likely to decide it. From my point of view, the performance was pleasing and I think Galaxy passed the ball with more conviction and movement. However, what Lisbon did do and what probably won them the game was to win most of the 50-50 balls, headers and seemed a bit stronger in closing down as a team. They did not want to get beat! Following last weeks disappointment Galaxy ended up being knocked out of the cup but this was a much better performance lads. Well Done!

A begrudgingly (just kidding), Well done to Lee, Gordon and his team and good luck in the next round lads.

MORPETH TOWN – V - NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY– UNDER 10’S – 18.11.2007
Score – 2-1
Weather – Very Cold, Damp and Windy
K.O 10.30

An early start, with the lads eager to put last weeks frustrating game to bed with a win at Morpeth.

1st Quarter
Galaxy started in good fashion and were trying to play the ball on a big pitch that was heavy going due to the weather. Like last weeks opponents Morpeth were defending well and were proving a tough nut to crack. They were also playing some decent stuff and nearly got through the Galaxy defence on a couple of occasions. Galaxy did test the home keeper on a few occasions but were let down by the final ball in the last third. Morpeth then took the lead as too many men pushed forward and the defenders missed their tackles to leave a Morpeth forward running half the length of the pitch to slot in the opener 1-0.

2nd Quarter
The Galaxy players were told to use the ball on the big pitch but more running and helping the man with the ball were essential to match a useful Morpeth team. The second quarter went much the same as the first but the Morpeth striker was looking very good and causing our back two problems. He went through on goal on a couple of occasions, only to be thwarted by Jake and a sliding tackle from Josh. Galaxy forced a number of corners but each one did not clear Morpeth’s front defender. A second goal certainly rocked Galaxy as our defenders did not heed earlier warnings. Caught up the pitch again and missing tackles the Morpeth striker advance unchallenged on Jake who tried to narrow the angle, however a cool lob saw the ball nestle in the back of the net 2-0. It was a bit cruel on Galaxy who were trying to get back in the game but the marking was not great and will need to be worked on in training.

3rd Quarter.
So 2-0 down on a freezing Sunday morning and the players feeling sorry for themselves. We tried to give them a bit of gee up and told them that one goal would get them back in the game. We at last started to defend properly and forced Morpeth on the back foot. Credit to the Morpeth players here as they flew into tackles, blocked shots and generally defended very well. Callum went close with an effort from the edge of the box but Hairo, Kyle and Louis all had efforts that were saved comfortably by the home keeper. Jake was called into action as the quarter finished and made a smart save down to his left.

4th Quarter.
The players knew they were still in this game and started the last quarter very well forcing a succession of corners. Again these were poorly delivered and gave the opposition the chance to counter attack with our players in the opposition box. At last a goal came as Hairo tricked his way down the by-line and pulled the ball across the box. Dan Crow was on hand to finish it off and raise players and parent’s spirits. Lady luck deserted Galaxy as they threw everything at Morpeth with Craig pulling most of the strings. Shots were cleared off the line, blocked, crept passed the post but as last week, time was against Galaxy and they were defeated 2-1.

A poor result for Galaxy and a number of things for the coaches to look at and work on. It was the first time the team had played in these conditions and I think Morpeth won this game as they adapted better. They got stuck in, tackled well and played in the right areas. Our lads need to learn this and quickly as Winter is certainly upon us.

NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY –V– GUIDE POST JUNIORS – UNDER 10’S – 11.11.2007
Score – 1-1
Weather – Cold but bright and sunny
K.O 10.30

Galaxy were at full strength for today’s game and raring to go after the previous weeks emphatic win.

1st Quarter
For the second week running Galaxy again started well and the “penny seems to have dropped” that they must be ready from the first whistle and not 5-10 minutes in, as had happened in previous early morning starts. The team had good shape to it and was pushing the visitors back and creating chances. Kyle held off his marker and laid a ball off for Callum to fire just over from the edge of the box. A few more chances came and went before Louis saw his effort fly past the post. The quarter ended 0-0 but the solid base supplied by Dan & Josh had seen Galaxy dominate the first quarter.

2nd Quarter
Guide Post started to get back into the game in this quarter and again this was from good defending by their big defenders. There were good little battles all over the pitch as this half was more even. Galaxy’s best chances fell to Dan who’s efforts just missed the target and Hairo who could not manage to get any power behind his shots from the edge of the area. However, Guide Post were breaking dangerously and this led to the opener. A ball across the box should have been dealt with by Galaxy who had men back. The ball was not cleared and Jake could not get his hands on it as it was forced over the line to the delight of the visiting parents 0-1.

3rd Quarter.
Going into the third quarter it was difficult to see how Galaxy were one down. They were encouraged to keep playing the way they had been but they were wasting too many chances and had to be more clinical to get back in the game. Galaxy were well on top in this quarter as Louis, Josh, Kyle and Dean all shot agonisingly wide. It seemed like it was going to be one of those days as Galaxy were very wasteful with the chances that came. It could probably be best summed up in that the visiting goalkeeper only saved a couple of efforts that were on target from ten shots or more.

4th Quarter.
At last the breakthrough came in this quarter as a cross found its way to Louis Grant arriving at the back post to fire into the net 1-1. To their credit Guide Post attempted to push men forward to try to win the game but Galaxy’s defenders were on top form and reading the game well. Some good opportunities when 3 verses 1 were only let down by the final ball as Galaxy went in search of a winner. Time eventually ran out for the home side as the referee blew for full time.

Parents and players could not understand how this one ended all square but it really was a case of missing excellent chances and choosing the wrong option in and around the box. The visitors gave a good account of themselves and were obviously happy with the point. All in all the performance was very good from Galaxy and hopefully another lesson learned on finishing teams and the ball off.

WANSBECK CITY – V - NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY– UNDER 10’S – 04.11.2007
Score – 0-15
Weather – Bright & Sunny
K.O 11.00

A full strength Galaxy were on the road for a change with a trip up to Ashington. The players seemed ready to get back to winning ways after last weeks disappointment.

1st Quarter
At last Galaxy came out of the blocks quickly and immediately put the home side under pressure. This paid dividends straight away as a good run down the right from Louis saw his cross reach Dan Crow who finished from a tight angle 1-0. A second soon followed as Hairo Shehaj picked the ball up on the half way line and headed for goal. He beat two men and finished well into the corner 2-0. It was “one way traffic” and a third was added, as this time James came down the opposite wing and found Hairo Shehaj to clinically dispatch his second 3-0. A good start to the game with finishing of the highest quality.

2nd Quarter
Galaxy kept up the pressure and added a fourth as Hairo used his pace to get to the by-line before sending over his cross. As with the first, Wansbeck did not clear and the ball found its way to Louis Grant at the back post, timing his run well, to finish it off 4-0. It was becoming more difficult for the Wansbeck players as Galaxy kept driving forward. A fifth arrived as Hairo again crossed that the keeper could not hold and Kyle Henry pounced 5-0. Wansbeck players were not helping themselves by not clearing the ball and this led to Hairo Shehaj capitalising on the mix up to claim a sixth.6-0. Craig and Josh were solid at the back and kept feeding the forwards with the ball to start attacks. A long range shot from Dean was not held by the keeper and Kyle Henry poached another one 7-0. Before the quarter drew to a close Kyle Henry turned on the edge of the box and fired a good shot into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance 8-0.

3rd Quarter.
The Wansbeck players came out looking demoralised but to their credit kept battling and trying to stop further goals. Galaxy players were told to pass the ball more often and create further openings. Kyle Henry sensed more goals were available and after a fine ball by Callum he outpaced the defender to finish well into the bottom corner of the net 9-0. More confusion in the home side’s ranks saw Kyle Henry pinch the ball off the defenders toes to smash another effort past the keeper 10-0. A good run by Josh saw him feed the ball out wide to Louis who delivered into the centre, for an on fire Kyle Henry to score his sixth and Galaxy’s eleventh 11-0. There was just time for another to be added as James Kemp jinked his way down the line, cut in and had an effort at goal that took a slight (we will give you this one James) deflection to beat the keeper 12-0. Our keeper Jake trundled in at the end of this quarter looking fed up. No need to ask him why as his gloves were still clean but I hope your keeping those saves ready for tougher tasks ahead.

4th Quarter.
The game could not finish early enough for the brave Wansbeck lads but as expected Galaxy’s players could not wait to go back out. A change around in team formation gave Dean the opportunity to cross for Dan Crow to tap in another 13-0. James Kemp can certainly claim the next goal as his effort rebounded off the post and over the line in what seemed like slow motion 14-0. There was just time to finish off a resounding victory as Hairo Shehaj slotted in after a powerful run and centre by Dan Crow 15-0.

It is difficult to see young opposition like this take a “hammering” but on the other hand we have suffered like that once this season. There was obviously a gulf of difference between the sides today; however some of the finishing from the Galaxy players was “top drawer” today. They also did well in the last two quarters to keep their shape, and pass the ball around, with the temptation being to try and beat 3 or 4 men.

28.10.2007 - NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY –V– BLYTH TOWN WHITES
Score – 1-5
Weather – Bright & Sunny
K.O 10.30

After a good result the previous week Galaxy players and coaches were confident going into another home game. But just as Newcastle United performed the day before it seems it is one step forward and two back.

1st Quarter

From the start it was Galaxy who were passing the ball well without opening up the Blyth defence. As the quarter progressed Blyth were getting more confident and were first to any 50-50 balls and seemed a bit hungrier. Blyth scored the first goal after playing a short corner and curling the ball into the box. Galaxy dealt with this but only cleared to the edge of the box. Josh did well to close the ball down but the ricochet fell nicely at the back post for a Blyth player to fire in. A little unlucky to be going in one down.

2nd Quarter
After warning the players that Blyth were up for this game, Galaxy started solidly again but were finding the Blyth defence a tough nut to crack. We then had a crazy 5 minute spell which would cost the team a win and hand the points to Blyth. The first came as a short throw in down by the corner flag position was not cleared correctly and a Blyth player pounced to make it 2-0. Seconds later from a Galaxy corner that did not clear the first man, Blyth cleared the ball up field. The Galaxy defender had positioned himself well but a poor first touch gave the ball to a Blyth Player who had a great supporting run from his left. A fine ball into the players path and a crisp finish gave the keeper no chance.3-0. There was more effort from Galaxy this quarter and were only let down by a final ball after some good passing moves. A fourth was then conceded as a break from Blyth saw a weak effort beat the Galaxy keeper at his near post. So the quarter ended with Galaxy 4-0 down with three goals coming from mistakes that could have been avoided.

3rd Quarter.
As discussed in the break Galaxy could not afford any more errors if they were to get back in the game. To their credit in this quarter they did everything but score. Blyth were pinned in their own half and did what we have done a few times this season, which was soaking up the pressure and trying to catch the opposition on the break. If a couple of the chances had gone in, most notable a great header from josh that just missed the target, then Galaxy may have got back in the game.

4th Quarter.
The players were told to keep going and they might have a chance of getting something. They did just this and this quarter mirrored the 3rd. As more men pushed forward Blyth added to their tally with a man tapping in from four yards out. Until these lads get older and play offside rules, communication from the goalkeeper and the defenders is a must and sadly most of the goals conceded this season have been in this fashion. Galaxy ended the game with a consolation goal from Kyle Henry. It was a beauty too, holding off a couple of defenders, before sending a delicate chip over the keepers head from the edge of the box.

A harsh lesson and scoreline for Galaxy who can take credit for trying to battle back in this game. However, even at this level, with the teams evenly matched, trying to recover from 4-0 down is difficult to do.

UNDER 10’S – 21.10.2007 - NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY v CRAMLINGTON JUNIORS REDS
Score – 2-1
Weather – Bright & Sunny
K.O 11.30

Another home game for Galaxy and the chance to put the previous week’s performance behind them. They would have to do this without Craig and James who could not make this match.

1st Quarter
Within a few minutes of the game starting, the teams seemed evenly matched with both teams playing one up front. As the quarter wore on Galaxy were forcing more corners which were well delivered by Louis without any real attempts at goal.

2nd Quarter
After praising the lads for being more solid and defending much better, we sensed that we could get the breakthrough. It arrived in spectacular fashion from the boot of Dan Crow. A clearance from Cramlington found Dan in space whose first touch set him up lovely for a dipping shot from 20+ yards out. I was directly behind the effort and realised at the same time as Dan that it had the keeper beat. A cracking opener that got the applause it deserved from the crowd.1-0. Kyle was making life difficult for the Cramlington defenders with his constant harrying and this eventually led to a second. A good supporting run from Hairo saw Kyle move the ball into his path. With little backlift, Hairo Shehaj stroked the ball clinically into the bottom right hand of the goal, giving the keeper no chance.2-0

3rd Quarter.
As expected Cramlington pushed more men forward trying to get the goal that would get them back in the game. Dean & Josh were repelling the attacks with Dan covering just in front. When Cramlington did get an effort on goal Jake’s handling was very good, holding on to the ball at the first attempt. Gaps were opening for Galaxy to exploit with Hairo, Kyle and Louis looking dangerous on the break. A third goal might have knocked the stuffing out of Cramlington and it nearly arrived from a Louis Corner as Kyle’s knee connected to send the ball just over the bar. As it happened Cramlington did get back in the game before the quarter ended. From our goal kick Jake did not connect correctly when clearing and the ball found the Cramlington forward 15 yards out. He controlled the ball well with his chest and just as Josh was attempting to close him down he lobbed the ball over Jake’s head and into the net. A well taken goal but in truth it was an error that had got them back in the game.

4th Quarter.
Galaxy were told to keep the team shape and reminded that we did not have to go bombing forward as we were still leading 2-1. Again excellent work form Kyle at closing down defenders meant other Galaxy players could stay with runners (Defending from the front). Galaxy created numerous chances to finish the game off the best of which saw Kyle curling an effort around the keeper, only to see his effort come back off the post. Dean was having his best game this season breaking up play and nearly bundling an effort over the line. I was starting to think that Galaxy should have a comfortable lead by now and that Cramlington would get a chance. It arrived as we were caught up field with a Cramlington player one on one with our Keeper. He elected to shoot early over Jake’s head. A couple of paces back and a brilliant one handed save by Jake saw him tip it over the bar. Dan and Callum also made some timely interceptions as Cramlington threw everybody forward, reading the game very well.

Another entertaining game, with Cramlington playing a good game and all parents enjoying the spectacle. It is encouraging that Galaxy are resilient in evenly matched games and with a bit more luck in front of goal could have stretched their lead. This would have helped the defence and team in general who improved immensely from the previous week’s performance.

Well Done!

14/10/07 - NORTH SHIELDS GALAXY V WALLSEND BOYS CLUB BARCA
Weather – 15*C Clear Blue Skies – I bet we don’t get many more like this!!
Score = 0 - 10

This is going to be difficult!

Unlike a previous defeat to Coast Soccer this was a game that Galaxy were well beaten in with very little positives to be taken.

The game did not start too badly with Wallsend pressing and Galaxy defending reasonably well. 10 minutes in, a strong run down the left wing ended with Hairo having an attempt at the goal that the keeper parried to the side. It fell perfectly for James to slot in for the opener but was denied by a fabulous sliding tackle from a Wallsend player. A great chance, which might have given the lads a bit more confidence against a previously, free scoring Wallsend side. Alas, it was not to be and from this moment Galaxy did not get a look in, albeit for a couple of long range efforts.

I could now list the goals that were conceded and the play that led to them, however this would take some time and be bad for myself and Steve’s health.

What I will say is this. Wallsend are a very strong team whose passing and movement will be a test for all teams this season. They also have a strong defence that did not give our team a look in apart from the attempt above. That said, 6 goals were scored by players that were completely unmarked 4 – 8 yards from goal that gave our keeper no chance.

To the Galaxy players then! Various reasons have been suggested for the performance and the fact that we did not turn up for this one. Coaches & Parents were looking forward to giving the table leaders a good game at home after recent performances and our own start to the season. However, this was certainly a reality check for all concerned and will hopefully not dent the player’s confidence too much.

During this game heads and confidence were dropping too easily but we have to remember that these are 10 year old lads. I hope they gain experience from games like this, where keeping together as a team and “digging in” are required when you are up against it and things are not going as well as you would like.

So to sum up, we will lick our wounds put this down to a “bad day at the office” or “school”! And get the lads fired up and ready to go in the next ga
